The Maple Grove boys and girls cross country teams each earned second-place finishes in the Class D races at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships Saturday at Sunken Meadow on Long Island. The boys team finished second with 87 points. Beaver runner was the winner with 32. Junior Peter Auer was the top Maple Grove runner, finishing 11th overall in 17:36.1. The girls team had 50 points with the second, third, seventh, 17th and 21st scoring runners. Tully of Section III was the champion with 45 points. Two sophomores led the way for Maple Grove as Christina Peppy finished eighth in 19:58.5, and Ava Crist was 12th in 20:17.1. Freshman Abby Brunenavs was 16th. More to come from cross country.
