Israel Folau has requested a code of conduct hearing to contest his sacking by Rugby Australia following a social media post in which he said “hell awaits” gay people. Rugby Australia announced on Monday that they were planning to terminate Folau’s contract after he posted on Instagram last week, writing that “drunks, homosexuals, adulterers, liars, fornicators, thieves, atheists and idolaters” should “repent” and that “hell awaits you” because “only Jesus saves”. The incident was not the first offence of that nature by the full-back, who is a born-again Christian, and he was served with a breach notice and 48 hours to respond. Folau has now responded and on Wednesday requested a hearing to fight the cancellation of his multi-million dollar contract, which was due to expire in 2022. Rugby Australia are making arrangements with the Rugby Union Players’ Association (RUPA) to bring together the code of conduct hearing, which is expected to take place after the Easter weekend.
