An Australian explorer who nearly died up Mount Everest was trying to reach the summit without oxygen. Gilian Lee was rescued by alpine experts from the Tibet Himalaya Expedition Company, who found him lying on the mountain unconscious at an altitude of 7,500m on Wednesday afternoon. Using ropes, and reportedly a yak, the group were able to carry him back to base camp, where he was rushed to hospital in a critical condition. Mr Lee is believed to have been planning to make it to the top without any oxygen. He had completed an 8000m summit, Manaslu, without oxygen before. Whether he made it to the top of Everest or not is unknown.
