Ajax closed the gap on Eredivisie leaders PSV to just five points with a hard-fought 3-1 win over struggling Excelsior on Thursday. Marcel Keizer's side built on Sunday's 3-0 win over their title rivals with a win that took them back above second-placed AZ and within touching distance of the top. Siem de Jong swept home a 23rd-minute opener from a David Neres cut-back but Excelsior grabbed a shock equaliser through Martin van Duinen just before the break. Kasper Dolberg restored the Ajax lead from the spot on 57 minutes after a needless handball by Hicham Faik, and Hakim Ziyech made sure four minutes from time as the visitors slid to their fifth defeat in a row. Heracles dumped Sparta Rotterdam deeper into relegation trouble with a 3-2 win at the Polman Stadion. Trending Transfer Centre LIVE! Eredivisie: Ajax beat NAC Breda to close gap on PSV at top of table
Ajax came from behind to beat NAC Breda 3-1 on Sunday and close the gap on Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven back to seven points. Erik ten Hag's second-placed side, who drew 0-0 at FC Utrecht last time out, went 1-0 down in the sixth minute when Thierry Ambrose netted. They had turned things around by half-time, with Donny van de Beek equalising in the 25th minute and David Neres putting them in front with a fine strike in the 39th. NAC, who are third from bottom, were subsequently reduced to 10 men in stoppage time when Bart Meijers was sent off following a tackle on Hakim Ziyech, whose free-kick then wrapped things up. AZ Alkmaar are five points behind Ajax in third after they were held to a 2-2 draw by second-bottom Roda JC at the AFAS Stadion. Trending Transfer Centre LIVE! Eredivisie: Ajax suffer setback in title race after Vitesse Arnhem defeat
Ajax's hopes of winning the Eredivisie title suffered another setback as they were beaten 3-2 at Vitesse Arnhem on Sunday. Bryan Linssen struck twice for Vitesse after Navarone Foor had given them an early lead and, although Ajax replied through Mateo Cassierra and Siem de Jong, they could not force an equaliser. Having also been held at home by mid-table ADO Den Haag last time out, second-placed Ajax now find themselves 10 points adrift of leaders PSV Eindhoven with eight games to go. At the foot of the table, Sparta Rotterdam gave themselves a relegation lifeline as they beat ADO 2-1 to record only their fourth win of the season. Michiel Kramer and Robert Muehren struck in the second half to overturn Erik Falkenburg's sixth-minute opener as Sparta climbed off the bottom, although they remain five points from safety. Eredivisie round-up: PSV stunned by struggling Willem II
Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven suffered a shock 5-0 defeat to struggling Willem II. Ten points clear and having lost just twice in the league all season prior to this weekend, PSV certainly would not have expected their trip to Tilburg to end in their biggest Eredivisie defeat since 1964. Ben Rienstra opened the scoring in the 21st minute and PSV's hopes of a comeback were dented when Francisco Soler added a second in the 59th minute. If Willem II were pinching themselves, things were about to get a lot more surreal. Soler converted a 70th-minute penalty and Rienstra then added his second to make it 4-0. PSV's misery was complete when Derrick Luckassen conceded a 90th-minute penalty and was shown a second yellow card, with Soler completing his hat-trick. Trending Transfer Centre LIVE! Eredivisie round-up: PSV go 10 points clear after victory over Sparta Rotterdam
Steven Bergwijn scored twice as Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven extended their lead to 10 points following a 2-1 comeback victory over bottom side Sparta Rotterdam. Kenneth Dougall's early header gave the home side a sixth-minute lead at Sparta-Stadion and a brief hope of moving up the table with an eye on just their second win in 13 outings. But Phillip Cocu's leaders went on to record their seventh-straight win thanks to a goal in each half from Bergwijn to move 10 points clear of second-placed Ajax, who host FC Twente on Sunday. FC Utrecht held on for a narrow 2-1 victory over PEC Zwolle to remain hot on their opponents' heels in sixth spot. Gyrano Kerk and Zakaria Labyad each scored in an exciting six-minute first-half spell before a penalty at the death from Mustafa Saymak reduced the deficit. Trending Transfer Centre LIVE! NHL Draft 2022: Shane Wright, Matthew Savoie, Jonathan Lekkerimaki, other top prospects available in Round 1
Getty Images The first order of business this NHL offseason is the 2022 Draft. It'll be here soon, as the opening round is set for Thursday evening. Kingston Frontenacs (Ontario Hockey League) center Shane Wright has been tabbed as the top prospect in the 2022 class. It's fairly likely that he'll go to the Montreal Canadiens with the top pick, but it's not a slam dunk like we've seen in recent years with the likes of Owen Power , Alexis Lafreniere and Jack Hughes going No. 1. So as the 2022 Draft draws closer, and that uncertainty up top lingers, here's a closer look at some of the top prospects that will hear their names called during Round 1. Shane Wright - C, Kingston (OHL) Wright isn't a shoe-in for the top pick, but he has a tremendous amount of upside that warrants the Canadiens grabbing him at No. 1. The Kingston center is about as lethal as it gets when he has the puck in open space. He possesses a deadly accurate shot. Over his past two seasons with the … [Read more...] about NHL Draft 2022: Shane Wright, Matthew Savoie, Jonathan Lekkerimaki, other top prospects available in Round 1
Eredivisie round-up: Five-star Ajax enjoy anniversary celebrations with win against Sparta Rotterdam
Ajax celebrated their 118th birthday in memorable fashion with a 5-2 thrashing of Sparta Rotterdam. The Amsterdam giants, who were founded on this day in 1900, conceded first and last at a chilly Het Kasteel but struck five times in between to remain seven points behind leaders PSV. Relegation-battling Sparta had looked set to spoil Ajax's big day when they took a 32nd-minute lead through Michiel Kramer, but the visitors hit back in style. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar equalised almost immediately and then second-half goals from Lasse Schone, Justin Kluivert and Hakim Ziyech (two) secured the points before Ryan Sanusi's late consolation. Despite the victory, PSV still have a firm grip on the title race with six matches remaining, although their home match with Ajax on April 15 could yet provide a twist in the tale. Dribble Handoff: Kevin McCullar, Tyrese Hunter among picks for college basketball’s top impact transfer
Getty Images The commitment of former Memphis guard Emoni Bates to Eastern Michigan last week unofficially closed the book on college basketball's 2022 transfer cycle. While there are still a handful of players in the portal who figure to land at Division I schools next season, nearly all of the transfers with the potential to be difference-makers have announced their destinations. As rosters for the 2022-23 season inch closer to becoming finalized, some winners and losers from transfer portal season have emerged from a team perspective. But which individuals will make the most noise on college basketball's national scene as transfers? It can be hard to project because last season showed us that players can appear from the weeds to become stars once they are in new environments. Look no further than Alondes Williams and Jake LaRavia, who earned All-ACC honors while helping improve Wake Forest from 6-16 in coach Steve Forbes' first season to 25-10 during his second … [Read more...] about Dribble Handoff: Kevin McCullar, Tyrese Hunter among picks for college basketball’s top impact transfer
Lillard camp keeps pressure on Trail Blazers, latest reports says re-signing not “sure thing”
The Portland Trail Blazers have traded for Jerami Grant , re-signed Anfrenee Simons, re-signed Jusuf Nurkic , picked up the guaranteed year for Josh Hart , and poached Gary Payton II away from the defending champs. Not a bad offseason in Portland. Plus, they are offering Damian Lillard $100 million over two years to be the star of this team . But Lillard and his camp want to keep the pressure up on the Trail Blazers, hence this sourced note from Sam Amick of The Athletic. While it has been widely assumed Lillard will accept the two-year extension offer worth more than $100 million that is expected to come his way, sources say the Trail Blazers still needed to have a strong offseason to persuade Lillard to sign on through the 2026-27 campaign (when he’ll be 36). The deadline here isn’t until the start of the regular season, and I’m being told this is not a sure thing just yet. There are moves Lillard — and Blazers fans — can question. For example, … [Read more...] about Lillard camp keeps pressure on Trail Blazers, latest reports says re-signing not “sure thing”
