Complimenting Flacco's on- and off-field leadership as the backup to 2021 first-round pick Zach Wilson , Saleh told reporters Wednesday that he believes Flacco could -- and should -- still be a starter at 37. "He should be, in my opinion," Saleh said of Flacco as a QB1. "He could start in this league, I believe that. Sometimes this league has a tendency to pigeonhole people, or put labels on people, and then their opportunities kind of get limited. But Joe Flacco is a starting quarterback in this league. The Pittsburgh Steelers released their first depth chart of the 2022 season. While it is not an accurate indicator of how the regular season season will start, it certainly provides clarity on how the Steelers' roster might look when training camp ends. Free-agent signing Mitch Trubisky is QB 1 at the moment, and he is followed by Pittsburgh veteran Mason Rudolph and 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett , in that order. This is the first season the Steelers will experience what it’s like without having Ben Roethlisberger on its roster since 2003. With a rotation of those three quarterbacks, there’s room for competition and for coach Mike Tomlin to experiment with who and what fits best for Pittsburgh. USATSI With long-term quarterback Russell Wilson moving on to the Denver Broncos , the Seattle Seahawks are now looking for their QB1. The current quarterback competition is between Geno Smith and Drew Lock . Smith earned the starting job for the preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers , but head coach Pete Carroll said the competition between the two QBs is ongoing. Speaking about Smith, Carroll said, via The Associated Press , "He's still going with the 1s (and) he's gonna start the game this weekend. He had a very solid day today, made some big throws today." As the calendar hits the second week of August, things began to clear up at Carolina Panthers training camp. Baker Mayfield , whom the Panthers acquired via trade with the Cleveland Browns before practices kicked off, is in an open quarterback battle with Sam Darnold . Mizzou has a new starting quarterback for 2022. Tigers coach Eli Drinkwitz named Brady Cook the starting quarterback Tuesday. Missouri released a highlight video of Cook to announce he won the quarterback battle . The sophomore quarterback beat out three other contenders. Tyler Macon , Jack Abraham and Sam Horn were in competition for the starting gig at Mizzou. Cook had the leg up though, filling in for a struggling Connor Bazelak late last season. Bazelak ended up transferring to Indiana this offseason. In five games last year, Cook was 46 of 58 passing (79.3%) for 345 yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions. He completed 6 of 7 passes for 72 yards and a touchdown in two games in 2020 before redshirting. As a member of the 2020 recruiting class, Cook was a three-star prospect out of St. Louis (Mo.) For Carolina, it might be a good problem to have to decide between two experienced quarterbacks after losing stability with the departure of Cam Newton . Former Baylor quarterback Gerry Bohanon made the most of his new college football opportunity. After transferring to South Florida, Bohanon had to earn the starting quarterback gig with the Bulls. With just a few weeks to go until the 2022 season, Bohanon won the job. USF made the announcement official Monday. Bohanon recently discussed going from Texas to South Florida after his transfer. Baylor football coach Dave Aranda named redshirt sophomore quarterback Blake Shapen the team’s 2022 starter earlier this year. After the announcement was made, Gerry Bohanon , the Bears’ starter in 2021, transferred to USF. Last season, appearing in five games, Shapen completed 72.1% of his passes for 596 yards with five touchdowns and zero interceptions. During a recent interview on SiriusXM Radio, Baylor offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes explained why Shapen was named the starter for the 2022 season over Bohanon. “I love both these guys. USA Today Sports Images Grant Wells has been named Virginia Tech's starting quarterback for the 2022 season opener against Old Dominion on Sept. 2, Hokies coach Brent Pry announced Wednesday. Wells, a redshirt junior transfer from Marshall , topped South Carolina transfer Jason Brown and Connor Blumrick in the competition. Wells ranks among the most productive transfers in college football , having completed 64.4% of his passes for 5,626 yards and 34 touchdowns with a 14-9 record in two seasons for the Thundering Herd. In 2020, he became the first freshman to earn first-team All-Conference USA honors. The West Virginia native has at least two years of eligibility remaining, not counting the blanket eligibility waiver granted by the NCAA after the COVID-19 season.
