ANDY MURRAY'S dream of playing at Wimbledon is in serious doubt after he underwent hip resurfacing surgery on Monday. The three-time Grand Slam champion revealed he is "battered and bruised" as he showed off a snap of his new "metal hip". The British star, 31, announced his plans to retire in 2019 when he spoke at a press conference before the Australian Open. But after he crashed out in the first round following a defeat to Roberto Bautista, he hinted surgery could save his career. Murray shared a snap of himself in a hospital bed and an x-ray photograph of his hip with his 1.6m Instagram followers. He added the caption: "I underwent hip resurfacing surgery in London yesterday morning. "Feeling a bit battered and bruised just now but hopefully that will be the end of my hip pain. Andy Murray believes he is making progress in his battle with longstanding injury problems, but admits his troublesome hip is still not pain free going into his return at the Brisbane International. Murray pulled out of the tournament at late notice in January, the start of a frustrating six-tournament 2018 season that ended in September following hip surgery and a brief summer comeback. Hip trouble has dogged the Scot since 2017, but Murray is ready to put his fitness to the test in Brisbane with a view to competing at the Australian Open later in the month. “I still have some pain in my hip but I need to play matches and see how it feels when I am able to play three, four, five matches in a row and take it from there,’’ Murray said. “Last year when I came here it was tough, I was struggling quite a lot.
