Arsene Wenger says Arsenal can win the Premier League title in new manager Unai Emery's first season in charge. Wenger ended his 22-year reign in the summer with his final seasons littered with protests against his employment as the club slide down the table. His last campaign at the helm concluded with a worst-ever finish of sixth. Arsenal lost their opening two games under Emery, against Manchester City and Chelsea, but won 11 on the trot until Sunday's 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace. The Gunners sit four points off league-leaders City after 10 games and when asked by talkSPORT if they could win it, Wenger replied "Why not? "When you look at last season at home we won 15, drew two and lost two - it's away we were not good enough. "But overall the quality's there. They have a chance - but at the moment we have some other teams who look very strong as well." Arsenal have not won the title since 2004 but Wenger won the FA Cup in three of his last four seasons. He told Sky Sports: … [Read more...] about Wenger backs Arsenal to win Premier League title this season
Arsenal to win the league
Petr Cech has blamed Arsenal’s recent failure to win the Premier League on how Arsène Wenger’s philosophy sometimes came before simply winning and says that the club has become “much more demanding” following the arrival of new head coach Unai Emery. Arsenal made it five wins a in a row with their 2-0 victory against Everton on Sunday and, after Santi Cazorla had on Saturday claimed that a lack of belief was behind the 13-year wait for a Premier League title, Cech pinpointed a failure to “win ugly”. He also likened Arsenal to golfer Tiger Woods who, despite winning his first tournament on Sunday for five years, won the last of his 14 major titles back in 2008. “What we lacked in the past?” said Cech. “I would say 'the Arsenal Way' was more important than getting the points sometimes and this is not sometimes how you win the league. Sometimes you need to make sure you win an ugly game, when you are not playing completely … [Read more...] about Arsenal forgot how to win ugly under Wenger – that’s what must be done to win the league, says Petr Cech
Matteo Guendouzi says Arsenal can defy expectations by winning the Premier League this season. The Gunners finished 37 points behind champions Manchester City last term and were reminded of the ground they have to make up with a 2-0 opening day defeat by Pep Guardiola’s side. New boss Unai Emery has been cautious about publicly defining Arsenal’s aspirations this season, merely seeking to improve on their sixth-place finish. However, Guendouzi, who made his debut on Sunday following a £7million summer move from Lorient, insists his team-mates should be aiming as high as possible. “Yes, I believe we can win it this season because of the players and staff we have,” said the 19-year-old Frenchman. “We truly believe and will do everything we can to win as many games as we can and to have a fantastic season. I truly believe we can do it. “Man City are a top team but there are a lot of top teams in this division because the Premier League is the best … [Read more...] about Guendouzi backs Arsenal to win the Premier League… this season!

Diego Costa certainly helped Chelsea this season with his 20 league goals, but how important are 20-goal-a-season players for Premier League success? Well, if your aim is just to get into the Champions League then such players are not particularly important. Only 46 per cent (26) of Premier League sides to finish in the top four since 2001-02, when four Champions League places were awarded to England, have had a player who scored 20 or more league goals during the campaign. On average, the top scorer of the side finishing in fourth scores 16.6 league goals in the season. The top scorer of the side finishing in third averages 17.6 goals, the one in second 20.4 and the one in first 22.3. In fact, sides finishing in fourth have had top scorers with as little as 11 goals to their name at the end of the season - Tim Cahill for Everton in 2004-05 and Robin van Persie for Arsenal in both 2006-07 and 2008-09. If your team is wanting to win the league though a 20-goal-a-season man is a bit more … [Read more...] about Do you need a 20-goal striker to win the Premier League?
