Former Gophers football coach Jerry Kill became the full-time athletic director for Southern Illinois, losing the acting title he had held since April 2018. The Southern Illinois University Board of Trustees gave him the title of AD and special assistant to the chancellor on Thursday. He will make $215,000 a year. He then went on to serve as an associate athletic director for Kansas State in 2016 before returning to coaching football as an offensive coordinator for Rutgers in 2017, but following more health issues that year, he retired from coaching again. "I spent some great years here in the coaching profession, and if it wasn't for Southern Illinois University taking a chance on me, I wouldn't have had the same opportunities in my career," Kill said in a statement. By Joey Kaufman | [email protected] | Orange County RegisterPUBLISHED: October 31, 2018 at 3:59 pm | UPDATED: October 31, 2018 at 3:59 pm USC enters a new reality. As much as its football program has had ups and downs in the aftermath of the Pete Carroll era and proceeding NCAA probation, hamstrung by the erratic tenures of Steve Sarkisian and Lane Kiffin, it still always seemed to be a ways away from the brink of a tailspin. Sure, there was the Sun Bowl finish of 2012, but even then, the Trojans stood 6-2 at the end of October and ranked No. 18 in the Associated Press poll. They finished 7-5 in the regular season, 7-4 with Matt Barkley as the starter. There was the mid-season firing of Sarkisian in 2015 too, but they were bolstered by an upset of third-ranked Utah and a following week’s win at Cal to reach 5-3 by this point on the calendar. All of this is to say the Trojans, sitting 4-4 overall and 3-3 in Pac-12 play, confront unfamiliar territory. This is the first time since … [Read more...] about USC football mailbag: Did Athletic Director Lynn Swann drive coaching staff changes?
