The Broncos have been busy. They have changed quarterbacks (Joe Flacco is in and Case Keenum is out) and waved so long to three defensive starters: safety Darian Stewart, linebacker Brandon Marshall and nose tackle Domata Peko) ahead of Wednesday’s start of the league year. Things get really busy starting Monday when the free-agent negotiating period begins. Players can be signed starting Wednesday. Here is a position-by-position at where the Broncos stand. Quarterback Under contract: Garrett Grayson ($570,000). Free agents: Kevin Hogan (exclusive rights). Scheduled to be traded: Case Keenum ($21,000,000; Washington). Analysis: In the view of general manager John Elway, this position will be semi-solved on Wednesday when the trade for Joe Flacco ($18.5 million salary) will be completed with Baltimore. But a big question remains: What is Elway’s future plan at the position? Flacco will arrive with three years left on his contract, but no guaranteed money, so he can be … [Read more...] about Broncos free agency: Position by position outlook

Fourth in a series looking at players who could be targeted by the Broncos in free agency when the negotiating period begins Monday: Adrian Amos Age: Turns 26 on April 29 Position: Safety. Current team: Chicago Bears. Experience: Four years (fifth-round pick in 2015 from Penn State). In 60 games (56 starts), Amos has 269 tackles and three interceptions, forced fumbles and fumble recoveries apiece. Amos has only three enforced penalties in his regular-season career. Case for: Amos would be an easy fit because new Broncos coach Vic Fangio was his play-caller in Chicago for four years. Amos would replace the released Darian Stewart and pair with Justin Simmons, able to play in the box, and cover tight ends who line up in the slot and running backs in the flat. Case against: None in terms of Amos, but the Broncos may choose to allocate free-agent money to finding a cornerback and/or an offensive lineman. Plus, Fangio has downplayed the importance of adding players familiar to his … [Read more...] about Broncos Free Agency: Bears safety Adrian Amos would have familiarity with Fangio
Third in a series looking at players who could be targeted by the Broncos in free agency when the negotiating period begins Monday: GOLDEN TATE Age: 30. Position: Receiver. Current team: Philadelphia Eagles. Experience: Nine years (second-round pick by Seattle in 2010). In 137 regular season games (101 starts), he has 611 catches for 7,214 yards and 38 touchdowns. He signed with Detroit as a free agent in 2014 and had three 90-catch and 1,000-yard seasons. He was traded to Philadelphia at midseason of 2018. Case for: What is the future of Emmanuel Sanders? Yes, the Broncos have announced they are picking up his option, but he is recovering from an Achilles injury. If the price is right, Tate could be a versatile player effective outside or in the slot, add an edge with his physical style of play and serve as a mentor for Courtland Sutton, DaeSean Hamilton and Tim Patrick. Case against: If the Broncos intend on paying Sanders his $10.15 million base salary, is there equal parts enough … [Read more...] about Broncos free agency preview: Concerned about Emmanuel Sanders? Golden Tate would be a good addition.
Second in a series looking at players who could be targeted by the Broncos in free agency when the negotiating period begins Monday: RAMON FOSTER Age: 33 Position: Left guard Current team: Pittsburgh Steelers Experience: Ten years (an undrafted free agent in 2009). Foster has started 131 of 146 games at guard for the Steelers. He has not been named to a Pro Bowl. He has missed only eight games since he became a full-time starter in 2011. Case for: Foster has experience with new offensive line coach Mike Munchak from their time in Pittsburgh and would provide an instant locker room/meeting room leadership component because he knows what is expected. … “His leadership is invaluable to the line, to the room, to the building,” Munchak told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette last year. “No one ever tunes him out because what he’s saying is right on.” … Foster won’t command big-time money so the Broncos would retain spending flexibility even if they … [Read more...] about Broncos free agency preview: Guard Ramon Foster would bring needed experience to line
First in a series looking at players who could be targeted by the Broncos in free agency when the negotiating period begins Monday: KAREEM JACKSON Age: 30 Position: Cornerback/safety Current team: Houston Texans Experience: Nine years (a first-round pick in 2010). He has started 124 of 132 games and has regular season totals of 559 tackles, 16 interceptions, and six forced fumbles. Last year, he started all 16 games (cornerback/safety) and made a career-high 87 tackles and had two interceptions and 17 pass break-ups. Case for: Jackson’s versatility is a perfect fit for the Broncos. He was moved to safety when Andre Hal was diagnosed with leukemia and back to cornerback last year because of injuries to Kevin Johnson and Aaron Colvin. Jackson can play against the slot receiver, which would allow Chris Harris to stay with a team’s No. 1 receiver if they line up exclusively outside. As a safety, the tape shows that Jackson is a sure open-field tackler whose experience means he … [Read more...] about Broncos free agency preview: Kareem Jackson, cornerback
