Shaquille O’Neal Joins Broward County Sheriff’s Office As Auxiliary Deputy
NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal has a new job. The broadcaster and former L.A. Laker is now an accredited auxiliary deputy for the Broward County Sheriff’s Department. The department made the announcement on Friday via Twitter, according to Fox News.“Basketball legend @SHAQ goes by many nicknames, and now added to that list is Deputy Shaq. The big man now works as an auxiliary deputy with the #BSO,” the department said in a March 15 tweet. “Sheriff Tony sat down with Shaq, and the two talked about the different ways law enforcement works to keep communities safe.” Broward is not the first place O’Neal has signed on with a police department. In 2016 Shaq was sworn in as a deputy for the Clayton County, Georgia, Sheriff’s Department. He also signed on with the Doral Police Department as a reserve officer in 2015. Board to Vote on Broward School Chief’s Future
The mother of a Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting victim who is now on the county school board is pushing to have the superintendent fired, saying he "has a history of leadership failures." Lori Alhadeff placed a measure on Tuesday's Broward County school board agenda calling for Superintendent Robert Runcie's dismissal. Alhadeff, whose 14-year-old daughter Alyssa died in the Feb. 14, 2018, massacre, has the support of other families of the 14 students and three staff members killed. It doesn't appear her measure has enough votes on the nine-member school board, however. A majority says he has improved the district's academic standing since his hiring in 2011 and the shooting wasn't caused by his policies. The district is the nation's sixth-largest with 327 schools and 270,000 students. The state gave Broward a "B'' in its latest district grades, noting that it has a graduation rate of 84 percent, a 10 percentage point increase over five years. A troubled and grossly overcrowded Ohio county jail where prisoners are routinely locked down, toilets, sinks and showers go un repaired and dietary restrictions are ignored has received mostly failing grades, according to a new state jail inspection report released this week.
