Usually, when you’re an NFL rookie you do whatever you can to fly under the radar off the field, and whatever you can to make a good impression on it.But a couple of current rookies apparently haven’t gotten that memo. Earlier this month, Cleveland Browns receiver Antonio Callaway was cited just before 3 a.m. for driving on a suspended license and having a small amount of marijuana (to which Hue Jackson decided the best course of discipline was to give Callaway more snaps in a game). And now, a Carolina Panthers rookie got in some hot water, also just before 3 a.m.113 MPH in a construction zoneAccording to the Charlotte Observer, Panthers receiver D.J. Moore, the 24th overall pick in this year’s draft, was pulled over for driving 113 miles per hour in a 65 MPH work zone two weeks ago.“(Expletive), that car is going fast,” Trooper H.L. Bautista wrote in his report of the stop.Moore was pulled over at 2:52 a.m., and said he was on his way to his home after … [Read more...] about Carolina Panthers first-round draft pick cited for driving 113 MPH
We're always looking for the next great sports debate, something fresh to discuss and deliberate, a subject or list invoking contemplation and cross-examination.We believe we've devised one: The 50 greatest coaches in bay area history.Yep, we went there. The journey was as difficult as one might imagine. This wasn't some list we slapped together over lunch. Over the last couple of months, a committee of current and former Tampa Bay Times sports reporters gathered twice in person, and deliberated extensively via phone and e-mail, before settling on our 50 (and some committee members remain unsettled). We limited our discussion only to head coaches or managers at the prep, college or pro level (sorry, Little League and AAU coaches). Moreover, we considered only a coach's accomplishments in the bay area.We placed a big emphasis on championships, while also considering program influence (those who "changed the culture" at a place) and historical impact. Career longevity was considered, but … [Read more...] about Fifty for the ages: The top coaches in Tampa Bay history
The Patriots will not represent the AFC in the Super Bowl by Pete Prisco @PriscoCBS moments ago • 12 min read Picking every NFL game with scores in July is just asking for it.But I can't help myself.I've been playing out the season, week by week, with scores, for the past five years. It's a labor of love. With it, though, comes the hate.I can hear it now:Moron.Idiot.How did you get your job?Do you even watch the games? We know more than you do.It's coming. And here's what I say to that:Who cares? Bring it on. It's part of the fun of doing this project. I love to pick games – even in July.So dive in, look around, and let the venom flow.Desperately wish you had a 30-minutes-or-so, daily NFL podcast in your podcast app every morning by 6 a.m.? Welcome to the week eight edition of our picks and predictions. We’re fired up after a shockingly bad effort last week, where we tipped a season-low six winners. This week is our redemption. Last week: 6-9 Overall: 66-38 Carolina Panthers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers However, I’m liking the Panthers play calling, which finally is putting Cam and DeAngelo Williams in the position to succeed. The Panthers to sneak one away from home, because the Buccaneers don’t have an offense. First touchdown: Ted Ginn Final score: 20 -16 Panthers San Francisco 49ers at Jacksonville Jaguars First touchdown: Vernon Davis Final score: 27 -17 49ers Cleveland Browns at Kansas City Chiefs First touchdown: Jamaal Charles Final score: 24 – 16 Chiefs Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots First touchdown: Julian Edelman Final score: 43 – 14 Patriots Buffalo Bills at New Orleans Saints First touchdown: Jimmy Graham Final score: 34 – 17 Saints Dallas Cowboys at Detroit Lions Matt … [Read more...] about Week Eight NFL picks
