NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The two-day Personnel and Recruiting Symposium held at the Omni Hotel in Nashville this week saw over 300 college football staffers come together in an environment where they were able to learn and network regarding their various off-field roles that are integral to their respective programs acquisition of players, whether that’s typically through the high school recruiting circuit and now of course the transfer portal. The itinerary included hearing from two legendary NFL general managers in Bill Polian and Kevin Colbert, along with current Tennessee Titans general manager Jon Robinson. Other speakers with terrific insight came from Jim Nagy of the Senior Bowl, NFL senior manager Venessa Hutchinson and Doug Whaley who is now with the XFL. Beyond that, leaders in the personnel space hosted breakout sessions where philosophy and ideas were shared and discussed. We were also able to get a pulse on how the personnel industry feels about the most relevant topics … [Read more...] about College football personnel staffers provide insight on the latest rules regarding recruiting

The backbone of college football programs meet in Nashville for the Personnel And Recruiting Symposium
NASHVILLE - The third Personnel And Recruiting Symposium - created to connect the best in college football personnel - returned to the Music City on Wednesday morning for a two-day conference. “A symposium 15 years ago, there would be like nine guys in the room,” Texas Director of Player Personnel Billy Glasscock said during a Q&A panel with a few of the most prominent players in the industry. Glasscock said it while looking out at a crowd of over 300 people, as college football programs across the land continue to pour into the vital personnel side of things. And they have to as long gone are the days of video tapes, projectors and college assistant coaches exclusively leading the charge on the trail in who to target and how to court key prospects. Ed Marynowitz is the founder of this event that saw nearly every major college football program represented this week along with several Group of Five schools and Ivy League staffers among others. A little less than 200 staffers … [Read more...] about The backbone of college football programs meet in Nashville for the Personnel And Recruiting Symposium
22 compelling storylines, teams, coaches, players that will dominate the 2022 college football season
CBS Sports graphic Football -- actual on-the-field, snot-bubblin' football -- can't get here fast enough. Over the last three years, those of us on the front lines have been asked to become amateur epidemiologists (COVID-19, 2020), ambulance chasers (Texas-Oklahoma ditching the Big 12 for the SEC, 2021) and cartologists (mapping USC-UCLA travel routes to the East Coast, 2022). Someone make it reign … football again. Thank (Eli) Gold, we're only a month away; season No. 153 of college football is almost here. From this vantage point, the sport itself looks like a shining city on the hill because, frankly, we're just about tapped out on transfers; name, image and likeness; monster coaching contracts; and conference realignment. Unfortunately, they're as much a part of the game these days as Mike Leach's sense of, ahem, fashion. Somebody, somewhere, snap the ball and instead of snapping your fingers to get to a new conference. We'll be watching as Nick Saban most … [Read more...] about 22 compelling storylines, teams, coaches, players that will dominate the 2022 college football season
College football odds: Florida, Michigan, North Carolina among undervalued teams entering 2022 season
USATSI Preseason practice sessions are underway across the country, Week 0 of the college football season is just three weeks away and optimism among fan bases is percolating. Though there are some familiar favorites among the betting favorites to win the Power Five conferences, plenty of programs around the country enter the 2022 campaign with realistic visions of hoisting league title trophies come the first week of December. While the group of true national title contenders can feel like an exclusive party, last season was a great example of how conference championships remain up for grabs even in the top conferences. Baylor emerged from a 2-7 campaign in 2020 to win the Big 12 last season, Michigan broke out as a surprise Big Ten champion and Pittsburgh went from 6-5 to 11-3 to win the ACC. A preseason bet on any of the three would have paid out nicely, but it would have required some foresight and a willingness to go with a "value" play. For those rubbing a crystal … [Read more...] about College football odds: Florida, Michigan, North Carolina among undervalued teams entering 2022 season
LSU football recruiting: Jaiden Ausberry committing to Notre Dame shouldn’t worry Brian Kelly, analyst says
Baton Rouge (La.) University Lab four-star linebacker Jaiden Ausberry announced his commitment to Notre Dame this week . In doing so, he chose the Fighting Irish over LSU, among others. Ausberry decided against staying home and playing for LSU, instead going to Tigers head coach Brian Kelly’s old stomping grounds in South Bend, Indiana. While this could be seen externally as a huge loss for Kelly as he enters Year 1 at LSU, not all are concerned. Colin Cowherd was among them, explaining Friday on The Herd . “So Brian Kelly leaves Notre Dame in great shape, goes to LSU and a story yesterday cracked me up,” Cowherd said. “So there's a high school right next to LSU’s stadium and they had this high school football player, his name was Jaiden Ausberry , he's a great linebacker, and Notre Dame came and stole him from LSU, even though he plays in the shadow of their stadium. He's a great, great kid. Great player, right? And so, LSU fans are freaking out. And it's like, … [Read more...] about LSU football recruiting: Jaiden Ausberry committing to Notre Dame shouldn’t worry Brian Kelly, analyst says
Picking the best college football team in each state entering the 2022 season
College football is one of the biggest and most popular sports in the country, though it's regional in its roots. Intra-state rivalries like the Iron Bowl, Egg Bowl and Old Oaken Bucket provide bragging rights for residents and fans for 365 days. Simply put, state pride has been the foundation of the sport for more than a century. Teams like Clemson and Georgia have dominated their in-state rivals recently, while the Michigan-Michigan State rivalry has been fairly even for the better part of a decade. "Talking season," as legendary coach Steve Spurrier famously named the period leading up to the season, is coming to a close. With that in mind, it's time to make our picks for the best team in each state. These picks are based on a wide variety of factors, including recent success, rivalry results and hope for the future. Alabama -- Alabama: The Crimson Tide boast the best record in the sport since 2008 and have won six national titles under coach Nick Saban. They have the … [Read more...] about Picking the best college football team in each state entering the 2022 season
Five potential college football chaos teams ready to wreak havoc on playoff race in 2022 season
CBS Sports Graphic It doesn't take a genius to figure out which teams will most likely reach the College Football Playoff before the season begins. I know because while I'm an idiot, I've done a good job of predicting the fields since the playoff was created in 2014. What's more challenging, however, is figuring out which teams could introduce a little chaos into the equation. Yes, there are roughly 10 programs capable of reaching the playoff, but there are only four spots and this is still college football . No matter how predictable the sport is, something unexpected happens every Saturday during the season with Goliaths falling to Davids along the line. So which teams are likely to play the role of David in 2022? I've dug into the schedules of all the title-contending programs looking for candidates to emerge, and I found five poised to strike. Now, to be clear, to qualify as a "Chaos Team" in this exercise, you cannot be a contender for a playoff spot yourself. These … [Read more...] about Five potential college football chaos teams ready to wreak havoc on playoff race in 2022 season
College football top 25: Defending champions North Dakota State lead preseason FCS Power Rankings
Getty Images You know the college football season is quickly approaching when preseason polls start rolling out, and the Division I Football Championship Subdivision is no different. With kickoff less than a month away, it's time to turn our attention to the teams that project to make the biggest impact on the field. Those who followed the FCS last year were treated to a fantastic season that saw -- stop me if you've heard this before -- the North Dakota State Bison take home the national championship. While the Bison seem to be the favorites to take home a national title once again, it doesn't mean this season is short of intriguing storylines. Here are a few examples: Jackson State made history when five-star ATH Travis Hunter became the first No. 1 overall recruit to sign with a FCS program out of high school. The Colonial Athletic Association transformed into a power conference during realignment by adding Hampton and Monmouth this season, as well as Campbell and … [Read more...] about College football top 25: Defending champions North Dakota State lead preseason FCS Power Rankings
College football bowl projections 2022: Ohio State delivers on preseason hype with return to playoff
CBS Sports graphic It's early August, which means it's time to get ready for college football! It's also time for preseason bowl projections, and when it comes to the College Football Playoff, expect some familiar names. So as not to ruin a tradition, again this season the projected No. 1 seed is Alabama . Reigning Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Bryce Young leads the way as he looks to join former Ohio State running back Archie Griffin as a repeat winner of that award. Elsewhere, the Crimson Tide are loaded with talent, as usual. Coach Nick Saban is welcoming his fourth consecutive recruiting class ranked either first or second in the 247Sports Composite team rankings. The more things change at Alabama, the more they stay the same. Oklahoma is projected to be the No. 4 seed as Alabama's opponent at the Peach Bowl semifinal in Atlanta. The Sooners' streak of six consecutive conference championships came to an end last season as OU lost on the road at Baylor , the … [Read more...] about College football bowl projections 2022: Ohio State delivers on preseason hype with return to playoff
AP Top 25 reactions: Clemson overrated, Penn State underrated in preseason college football rankings
USA Today Sports Images The 2022 Preseason AP Top 25 was released on Monday, and outside of an expected group at the top -- namely, Alabama , Ohio State and Georgia -- the rest of the poll was a chaotic mix. For example: Clemson , No. 14 in the final AP Top 25 of the 2021 season, starts 2022 at No. 4. Meanwhile, Texas A&M -- unranked in the AP poll at the end of last season -- begins this year at No. 6 thanks to coach Jimbo Fisher's relentless recruiting efforts and high expectations. Scattered throughout the rest of the preseason AP Top 25 are teams with something to prove. No. 7 Utah , No. 13 NC State , No. 20 Kentucky and No. 24 Houston are just some of the teams looking to show that they're capable of taking that next step over the course of the season. Ultimately, the preseason poll is just a starting point. Where these teams end up after the College Football Playoff National Championship is played is anyone's guess. Still, it wouldn't be … [Read more...] about AP Top 25 reactions: Clemson overrated, Penn State underrated in preseason college football rankings
