Getty Images As the 2022 NBA free agency period dies down, all eyes turn to the deals yet to be completed. It's presumed that Kevin Durant is headed out of Brooklyn, which could also trade Kyrie Irving, for whom the Lakers are angling. The Suns haven't resolved their DeAndre Ayton dilemma (will someone emerge as a sign-and-trade partner?). Philly is working with James Harden on an extension, but nothing has been announced. For now, taking into account the draft, trades and free-agent signings, here is my list of 2022 offseason winners and losers. This post will continue to update. Here's what we have so far. Buccaneers’ Mike Evans believes Rob Gronkowski will not come out of retirement this time: ‘I think he’s done’
Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports Last month, legendary tight end Rob Gronkowski made the decision to retire . It's something he's done before, which is why not everyone is sold on his claim that he's hanging up the cleats again. In fact, Gronk's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN that he wouldn't be surprised if Tom Brady calls in the middle of the 2022 or 2023 season, and Gronk ends up returning to the field. Those who have a better idea of Gronk's mindset are his former teammates on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers . Wide receiver Mike Evans recently called him "the best tight end ever," and said that the offense will certainly miss him. However, he does believe Gronk is officially done with football. "I hope he comes back," Evans told KPRC2 . "With Tom and Gronk you never know. I wouldn't be mad if he came back, I'd be excited. But I think he's done. He plays the tight end position with max effort, he takes a pretty big beating and I've seen his body after some of the … [Read more...] about Buccaneers’ Mike Evans believes Rob Gronkowski will not come out of retirement this time: ‘I think he’s done’
Chicago mayor recommends potential Soldier Field dome, renovations to keep Bears downtown, per reports
Getty Images The Bears are positioned for a future relocation from downtown Chicago to the suburb of Arlington Heights in order to build a new "world-class" stadium . But Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is proposing the city make its own renovations to keep the team in town. A mayoral committee is set to recommend Chicago "explore the feasibility" of adding a dome to Soldier Field, the Bears' longtime open-air stadium, along with other significant updates to the historic venue, per Crain's Chicago Business . Lightfoot has openly floated the idea of enclosing Soldier Field before, most recently in February . But her Lakefront Museum Campus Working Group, established to recommend strategic investments to Chicago's lakefront landmarks, is now expected to formally propose Soldier Field improvements. This would include rebuilding parts of the nearly 100-year-old stadium and potentially selling or granting naming rights to the venue, which has been home to the Bears since 1971. … [Read more...] about Chicago mayor recommends potential Soldier Field dome, renovations to keep Bears downtown, per reports
Biggest 2022 NFL training camp battles involving rookies: Chris Carson, Zach Ertz among vets to be pushed
imagn's Patrick Breen NFL teams often target positions in the draft to replace veterans as a cost-cutting measure. Those plans can take a few years to materialize and that leads to a healthy competition in training camp. Eagles drafted two young players (center Cam Jurgens and defensive tackle Jordan Davis ) who are talented enough to earn longer looks, but the two veterans ahead of them -- Jason Kelce and Fletcher Cox , respectively -- have so many skins on the wall that it is difficult to envision Philadelphia not starting them. It is more likely that Cox starts and splits snaps with Davis. Seahawks RB Kenneth Walker III vs. Seattle's running backs Rashaad Penny has played in 10 games or less each of the past three seasons. When available, he did not look like the player who enticed the team to use a first-round selection on his talents. Chris Carson has missed 17 games over the past two seasons. Both are entering the final year on their contract. The … [Read more...] about Biggest 2022 NFL training camp battles involving rookies: Chris Carson, Zach Ertz among vets to be pushed
Eagles’ Lane Johnson says Jalen Hurts ‘carries himself with a lot of poise’ and ‘demands respect’
/ Getty Images There was a lot of smoke this offseason about the Philadelphia Eagles potentially looking to make a change at the quarterback position. They were connected in rumors to Russell Wilson , for example, and with three first-round picks in the coffers, they had the ammo to make a deal if they'd wanted to. Of course, things did not work out that way. The Eagles stuck with Jalen Hurts -- at least for this year. And Hurts has at least one big fan along his offensive line in right tackle Lane Johnson , who sung the QB's praises this week. "He just carries himself with a lot of poise. I mean, he demands respect," Johnson said on NFL Total Access . "Just the way he approaches day-to-day activity, how he trains, what he does in the film room. And he's a great motivator. He's a great leader. (He's) super behind the scenes, even during summer, he's connecting with a lot of the guys. Lot of receivers. Doing 7 on 7. Just doing typical work to prepare. I know he's … [Read more...] about Eagles’ Lane Johnson says Jalen Hurts ‘carries himself with a lot of poise’ and ‘demands respect’
Agent’s Take: Deadline looming for four remaining designated franchise players to sign long-term deal
/ Getty Images The clock is ticking for teams to sign players given the franchise designation to a long-term deal. The deadline for franchise players to sign multiyear contracts is July 15 at 4 p.m. ET. After the deadline passes, players with franchise tags are prohibited from signing long-term deals until the end of the regular season on Jan. 8, 2023. Eight players received franchise player designations this year. Four have already signed long term. The two franchised wide receivers quickly agreed to deals after the 2022 league year started on March 16. The Buccaneers gave Chris Godwin a three-year, $60 million deal with $40 million fully guaranteed despite him tearing the ACL and MCL in his right knee late in the 2021 regular season. The Raiders acquired Davante Adams from the Packers for 2022 first- and second-round picks in a sign-and-trade transaction. Adams signed a five-year, $140 million contract containing $65.67 million in guarantees. The maximum value of … [Read more...] about Agent’s Take: Deadline looming for four remaining designated franchise players to sign long-term deal
Kyle Hendricks injury update: Cubs starter lands on injured list with shoulder strain
USATSI Chicago Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks left his start on Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers ( CHC 8, MIL 3 ) after three innings because of "right shoulder soreness," according to MLB.com . Hendricks previously missed 12 days in June with a similar issue, although it's unclear how this bout compares with that one. On Wednesday, the Cubs placed Hendricks on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder strain, the team announced. He will have an MRI in the coming days. Righty Anderson Espinoza was called up to fill the roster spot. "Went out for the first warmup of the game and kind of felt it," Hendricks told MLB.com after Tuesday's game . "And it just set in from there. (Manager David Ross) knows me. So, he knew. He could see it. There was no point in pushing. It's not something that's so bad that's going to get out of control. It's just not great. It's something we definitely want to get checked out and see what it's all about." Hendricks' … [Read more...] about Kyle Hendricks injury update: Cubs starter lands on injured list with shoulder strain
Baker Mayfield traded to Panthers: QB a home underdog in Week 1 matchup vs. Browns
USATSI Baker Mayfield has himself a new home in the NFL after the Panthers struck a deal with the Browns on Wednesday that'll send the former No. 1 overall pick to Carolina. Cleveland receives a conditional fifth-round pick for Mayfield, while also eating a chunk of the quarterback's salary for the 2022 season. It's all but certain that Mayfield will be the Panthers' starter to begin the year and that's where the true spice to this trade is found. As fate would have it, the Panthers will open up the regular season hosting the Cleveland Browns at Bank of America Stadium in Week 1. So, Mayfield's first official game in a Panthers uniform is set to be against the club that decided to move off of him this offseason. And he'll be a home dog when he does it. Baker Mayfield trade grades: Panthers better off at QB, Browns put a bow on mismanaged situation
Getty Images Baker Mayfield and the Browns finally parted ways on Wednesday, with Cleveland dealing the former No. 1 overall draft pick to the Panthers in exchange for a conditional 2024 fifth-round pick. The move brings closure to two different quarterback situations, both of them messy: Carolina has finally added to an underwhelming group of signal-callers ahead of 2022 training camp, while Cleveland has officially paved the way for Deshaun Watson to be their sole premium investment under center. Which side won the Mayfield trade, however? Here's how we'd grade the deal: Browns: D Let's start with this: you can't unlink the circumstances that led to Mayfield's departure from the trade itself. More than likely, there would be no divorce if it weren't for Cleveland hitching its wagon to Deshaun Watson even while the ex-Texans star still faced accusations of sexual assault or misconduct from more than two dozen women. Watson, to be fair, has not faced criminal charges … [Read more...] about Baker Mayfield trade grades: Panthers better off at QB, Browns put a bow on mismanaged situation
Baker Mayfield traded to Panthers: Disgruntled Browns QB headed to Carolina for conditional pick
USA Today Images The Carolina Panthers are adding a new quarterback to their depth chart, as they are sending a conditional 2024 fifth-round pick to the Cleveland Browns for Baker Mayfield . According to CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones , the fifth-round pick can convert to a fourth-rounder based on playing time. NFL Network reports the Panthers and Browns will also split the money Mayfield is owed in 2022. Money was always an issue in trade negotiations, as Mayfield was due a fully guaranteed $18.85 million in the final year of his rookie deal. The Browns will pay Mayfield $10.5 million in 2022 while the Panthers will pay about $5 million. Mayfield also reportedly agreed to take about a $3.5 million pay cut. The former No. 1 overall pick has been searching for a change of scenery ever since the Browns won the Deshaun Watson sweepstakes. The Panthers were long considered to be one of the favorites to land Mayfield, and they have swung a deal for him just … [Read more...] about Baker Mayfield traded to Panthers: Disgruntled Browns QB headed to Carolina for conditional pick
