With a sparkling stadium and surging program, San Diego State makes an easy case for Pac-12 expansion

Derrick Tuskan, SDSU Athletics SAN DIEGO -- J.D. Wicker is standing on the top concourse of one of the biggest parties in the country. What else would you call San Diego State's new stadium, which equates to the latest lob pass for what the school hopes is a slam-dunk entry into the Pac-12? On its best day, which projects to be every game day , college football is almost a sideshow in new Snapdragon Stadium. The main event is the craft brew-infused vibe that San Diego State's athletic director has, well, crafted. "There's more bars in that stadium than there are in most cities," said Aztecs coach Brady Hoke. That isn't entirely why San Diego State enters 2023 as the next hottest realignment candidate, but elite concessions certainly do not hurt. Taps or no taps, Wicker's vision of a 35,000-seat boutique stadium reflecting the city's culture, history, food and brew -- built on one of the country's most expensive pieces of real estate -- was going up regardless. … [Read more...] about With a sparkling stadium and surging program, San Diego State makes an easy case for Pac-12 expansion

How Chelsea’s new spin on long-term contracts aligns with Todd Boehly’s approach as Dodgers minority owner

Getty Images The year is 2029. Graham Potter's vibrant Chelsea side are once more sweeping all ahead of them, swashbuckling in attack but with the defensive instincts that only come through years together on the training ground. Yet another Champions League is seemingly within reach for this side, who, for what feels like a generation, have grown together into a footballing force. That, perhaps, is the end vision underpinning Chelsea's radical new approach to the management of contracts at Stamford Bridge. In an era of dwindling patience and fast fixes, the Todd Boehly-led consortium that took control last summer are building a squad for the long term, whether they like it or not. Padres leave the postseason on a sour note, but the best is yet to come for one of MLB’s most exciting teams

October 9, 2020 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

Getty Images While I'd never include the word, "exactly" in a phrase like this, I'll keep it more generic and say that I have an idea how most die-hard Padres fans feel right now. If you don't know why, that's OK. This is no place to elaborate. I'll just ask you to trust me. I've been in a very similar spot as a fan and it worked out pretty damn well. What you just experienced, Padres fans, was the year before the year. This doesn't necessarily mean the Padres are going to win the World Series next year. Winning it all is very difficult and requires so much along the way, including getting lots of breaks. Ask the team that just extinguished the Padres' exciting 2020 season. The Dodgers have been one of the best teams in baseball for years and still don't have a ring. What I mean about the year before the year is that before 2020, there were still questions on if this Padres group could actually be the one to start making the leap. After all, there were some reasons for … [Read more...] about Padres leave the postseason on a sour note, but the best is yet to come for one of MLB’s most exciting teams

College basketball rankings: Alabama and Tennessee separating themselves from rest of SEC pack

January 26, 2023 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

CBS Sports graphic Alabama beat Mississippi State 66-63 on Wednesday while Tennessee blasted Georgia 70-41. That means the Crimson Tide and Volunteers remain alone in first and second, respectively, in the SEC standings and seem to be separating from the rest of the league -- at least as it pertains to national relevance and NCAA Tournament seeding. Both Alabama and Tennessee are projected top-two seeds for the NCAA Tournament , according to CBS Sports Bracketology expert Jerry Palm. I would agree with that sentiment — evidence being that I have Alabama No. 2 and Tennessee No. 8 in Thursday morning's updated CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 daily college basketball rankings. No other SEC school is in my top 20, however, nor better than a 6-seed in Palm's latest projected bracket, all of which suggests there's a sizable gap between Alabama/Tennessee and everybody else in the conference. Does that mean the SEC is a two-team race? Not necessarily. Texas A&M won at Auburn 79-63 … [Read more...] about College basketball rankings: Alabama and Tennessee separating themselves from rest of SEC pack
