(Allen Eyestone / The Palm Beach Post) BOCA RATON — Though Chris Robison was never on Netflix’s “Last Chance U,” Florida Atlantic head coach Lane Kiffin invoked the hit documentary series’ name when discussing his second-year quarterback. “You see so many kids that maybe transfer ‘down,'” Kiffin said Thursday, nearly a year after Robison transferred to FAU from Oklahoma. “Whether they’re going there to a junior college or going from a Power Five (school) to a Group of Five (school), sometimes there’s an arrogance factor in there. Watching that show, I’ve noticed that a lot. I keep that in mind and maybe, he had some of that.” Robison, 19, was dismissed from the Sooners last August after an April 2017 arrest for public intoxication, though the team officially called his … [Read more...] about After past issues, Florida Atlantic quarterback Chris Robison impressing teammates with improved maturity

(Photo by Joel Auerbach/Getty Images) BOCA RATON — In only one season with Chris Kiffin, Florida Atlantic’s defense went from one of the nation’s more underachieving units to a fierce, playmaking group capable of stopping anyone. Though Chris – the younger brother of FAU head coach Lane Kiffin – is now in San Francisco, the Owls are still poised to be among the country’s top defenses under his replacement, former Southern Miss. defensive coordinator Tony Pecoraro. “I think although we did a lot of good things last year (as a defense), moving forward, we’re trying to get so much better,” All-Conference USA linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair said. “Even when coach Pec first showed up on campus, and we had our first meeting and … [Read more...] about Why Florida Atlantic promises to have an “aggressive” defense under new defensive coordinator Tony Pecoraro this fall
Florida Atlantic Owls safety Jalen Young (18) intercepts a pass against the North Texas Mean Green during the first half at FAU Football Stadium. Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports BOCA RATON — Jalen Young has a message for any aspiring athlete, whether they’re a young fan or a teenager in Palm Beach County, who wants to model themselves after the senior Florida Atlantic safety. “Be better than me,'” Young told The Post this spring. “Make your own name. That’s how I was brought up, like I don’t want to be nobody. I want to be myself. I want to be the best. When it’s said and done, I want my name to ring and be as high as it can be. For those guys that are coming out, I’d say surpass me. Do what it takes to be you and make your own name.” Let Young clarify for a second: He’s certainly proud that people, including some of his new teammates, respect his game and his character. Named to The Post’s Super 11 team in … [Read more...] about “Be better than me”: How Seminole Ridge alumnus Jalen Young became a Florida Atlantic defensive icon

(Rob Foldy/Getty Images North America) BOCA RATON — Florida Atlantic may be emerging as a national program under head coach Lane Kiffin, but the program is still built from its heavy foundation in Palm Beach County. Since the program was founded by Howard Schnellenberger in 1998 and began play in 2001 as a Division I-AA program, the Owls have tried to mostly focus on signing and developing local players. FAU’s first Conference USA championship last year – and first winning season since 2008 – featured 14 players from Palm Beach County and 49 from Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade Counties. FAU will begin training camp this Friday with 15 former Palm Beach County players on their active roster, including AP All-American running back … [Read more...] about Familiar faces: Which former Palm Beach County stars are playing for Florida Atlantic this season?
Devin Singletary #5 of the Florida Atlantic Owls runs for a touchdown against the Florida International Golden Panthers at FAU Stadium on November 18, 2017 in Boca Raton, Florida. (Joel Auerbach/Getty Images North America) Make no mistake, there are no signs of ruffled feathers from Conference USA’s elite defenders when it comes to FAU star running back Devin Singletary’s talents. If anything, as Marshall linebacker Chase Hancock explained at the C-USA Media Kickoff in Texas earlier this month, those tasked with stopping the American Heritage alumnus can’t help but respect him. “It’s unreal,” said Hancock, who joined Singletary on the league’s All-Preseason Team. “He gets through holes that (you wonder) how the heck did he get through there? We have to be for sure tacklers when it comes to him.” Singletary ran for a league-high 1,920 yards and a conference-record 32 rushing touchdowns last season. Still only going into his junior … [Read more...] about After sprinting past them, Florida Atlantic running back Devin Singletary leaves Conference USA opponents in awe
