Hope Powell: Defying Mum to play football, building England Women and representing her communities

January 26, 2023 by www.skysports.com Leave a Comment

Hope Powell has revealed how she defied her Mum to play football, how she built England Women and the importance of representing her communities. Powell is perhaps best known for her time as a coach with the Lionesses, Team GB and, more recently, with Brighton. But she was also an experienced player herself, amassing over 60 England caps and a raft of other domestic accolades. However, growing up in West Indian culture in south London in the 60s and 70s, it was not the most conventional career path for a girl - and Powell's mother even tried to dissuade her from football. "When I was growing up and playing on the estate, I honestly thought I was the only girl that played," she told Jess Creighton on Inside the WSL. Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player This week's episode of Inside The WSL takes a dive into the life of Hope Powell - one of the most influential figures in the game. Patrick Reed put aside his row with Rory McIlroy and a six-hour weather delay to make an impressive start to the Dubai Desert Classic. Players were told on Thursday morning that the Emirates Golf Club was "inaccessible" and told not to travel to the course due to flooding on the roads due to heavy rainfall. After a few hours of dry weather and a massive clean-up operation by ground staff, play got underway at 9.15am (GMT) but half the field was unable to get on the course at all and will start round one on Friday. Dubai Desert Classic leaderboard McIlroy accuses Reed of 'not living in reality' Dubai Desert Classic: Latest headlines Reed got through 16 holes in four under par to lie a shot behind early leader Belgium's Thomas Pieters, who has three holes remaining. Women’s Super League postponements: Everton’s Izzy Christiansen calls for action after ‘dark weekend’

January 24, 2023 by www.skysports.com Leave a Comment

Everton midfielder Izzy Christiansen has called for action to address the amount of Women's Super League games lost to bad weather after "a dark weekend" for the women's game. Chelsea's league contest with Liverpool was abandoned by match officials after six minutes due to a frozen pitch on Sunday , while two other fixtures - Brighton vs Arsenal and Tottenham vs Leicester - fell foul to the freezing conditions. Christiansen said a long-term solution is required to avoid a repeat of the "shocking" situation at Kingsmeadow and not damage the momentum and integrity of the game that has been growing exponentially following the Lionesses' Euros success last summer. "Action needs to be taken, possibly an investigation into what's actually happened and why and how the FA and clubs move forward to make sure this doesn't happen again in the future," Christiansen told Sky Sports. How Chelsea’s new spin on long-term contracts aligns with Todd Boehly’s approach as Dodgers minority owner

Getty Images The year is 2029. Graham Potter's vibrant Chelsea side are once more sweeping all ahead of them, swashbuckling in attack but with the defensive instincts that only come through years together on the training ground. Yet another Champions League is seemingly within reach for this side, who, for what feels like a generation, have grown together into a footballing force. That, perhaps, is the end vision underpinning Chelsea's radical new approach to the management of contracts at Stamford Bridge. In an era of dwindling patience and fast fixes, the Todd Boehly-led consortium that took control last summer are building a squad for the long term, whether they like it or not. Man City vs Arsenal: Mikel Arteta finally threatens to match mentor and ‘idol’ Pep Guardiola

January 26, 2023 by www.skysports.com Leave a Comment

Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola have been friends for more than two decades, colleagues at Barcelona and City and now, for the first time, title rivals. Just over three years since leaving Pep's City for his old club Arsenal, Arteta has achieved the uphill task of making the Gunners worthy opponents for his former employers. And for one week, the Premier League title race has been put on hold as attention turns to the FA Cup, with Arsenal chasing a domestic double at the expense of Arteta's old boss. Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player Arteta says Arsenal's title battle with Guardiola will not have an impact on their friendship This is the only competition where he has beaten Guardiola as a manager, but Arsenal's five-point lead in the Premier League suggests the wider hoodoo is lifting. Manchester City vs. Arsenal live stream: FA Cup prediction, TV channel, how to watch online, start time

Getty Images Arsenal's visit to Manchester City serves as the highlight of the FA Cup fourth round weekend but in truth it may serve as little more than an appetizer for their tussle at the top of the Premier League. The Gunners hold a five-point lead over Pep Guardiola's side, who they will face at the Emirates Stadium on Feb. 15, and a win in the cup could give them the belief to hold out at the top of the table. City have not beaten Arsenal, the most successful club in the competition's history, in the FA Cup since 1904 and were beaten 2-0 in the 2020 semifinal. However, that was a rare victory for Mikel Arteta over his former boss. Guardiola has not lost a Premier League meeting with Arsenal. Mike McCarthy addresses his future with Cowboys, has cryptic response regarding OC Kellen Moore

January 26, 2023 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

Tim Heitman / USA TODAY Sports Despite being "sickened" by his team's recent playoff exit, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is not making a change when it comes to head coach Mike McCarthy. McCarthy, who gave his season-ending press conference on Thursday, said that he recently received a voice of confidence from Jones, who has fired a host of coaches during his near 34-year run as Cowboys owner. "As far as my relationship with Jerry, just using his words, we're in an excellent spot," McCarthy said , via Pro Football Talk. "The partnership that we have, he's excited about. He told me a number of times this week that he wants me to coach here as long as Coach Landry did. And I said, 'OK, that's a long time.' I feel really good about our relationship. I think our ability to discuss and disagree, we do a good job of that, and I think that's important." While he isn't worried about his job status, McCarthy offered a somewhat cryptic response when asked about offensive coordinator … [Read more...] about Mike McCarthy addresses his future with Cowboys, has cryptic response regarding OC Kellen Moore

Carolina Panthers hire Frank Reich as new head coach to reunite with franchise’s first starting quarterback

January 26, 2023 by www.skysports.com Leave a Comment

Frank Reich was named the new head coach of the Carolina Panthers on Thursday. Reich becomes the sixth head coach in Panthers history having previously served as the first starting quarterback for the franchise in 1995. The 61-year-old received a second interview with owner David Tepper and the team's search committee this week. He joins the Panthers after being fired by the Indianapolis Colts nine games into the 2022 season. He posted a 40-33-1 record in four-plus seasons in Indianapolis and guided the club to two postseason appearances. Steve Wilks served as the interim coach of the Panthers after replacing Matt Rhule, who was fired October 10 after a 1-4 start. Carolina finished with a 7-10 mark and have missed the playoffs in each of the five seasons since Tepper brought the franchise in 2018 for a then-NFL-record $2.275 billion.
