Rachel Homan runner-up at Canada curling championship while 8 months pregnant
Rachel Homan , while eight months pregnant, skipped a curling team that took runner-up at the Canadian National Championship on Sunday. Homan, Canada’s skip at the 2018 Olympics, led a four-woman team in their first full tournament together to the top ranking and a playoffs bye into Sunday night’s final in Calgary. In that final, Kerri Einarson ‘s team edged Homan’s group 9-7 for a repeat title. Homan finished as, statistically, the second-ranked skip behind Einarson at the event known as Scotties. “Can we talk for a second about skipper over here?” Emma Miskew , a teammate since each were 11 years old, said after the final. “Unbelievable that you curled that well. Think all women should be inspired to do that. VIENNA — A fan holding a large beer gestured to Sara Hughes with his free hand as he watched the world beach volleyball championships. “That’s her,” the fan was overheard saying. “She’s the one who turned down Kerri Walsh Jennings .” Word has gotten out that Hughes had the opportunity to partner with Walsh Jennings, a three-time Olympic champion, but instead chose to continue with collegiate partner Kelly Claes . Claes and Hughes met as teenagers at a beach volleyball camp. Hughes, who had played since age 8, approached Claes, who was new to the sand, about a partnership. “The chemistry was there just like that,” Claes said, snapping her fingers. When it came time to pick a college, Claes initially committed to Long Beach State for indoor volleyball. But Hughes convinced her to instead play beach volleyball at USC.
