SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Stanford freshman Rose Zhang stood just short of the 17th green, the ball resting a few feet away in the rough as she tried to close out a tight match. Oregon’s Sophie Kibsgaard Nielson wheeled past Zhang while lining up her next shot and accidentally rolled over the ball with her push cart, incurring a one-shot penalty. A bizarre sequence, but it had little to do with the outcome. Zhang was going to wrap up the national championship either way. Zhang closed out Kibsgaard Nielson with a two-putt par and Stanford beat Oregon 3-2 on Wednesday for its second national championship. “It turned out regardless of that penalty shot I was able to secure it, but it definitely lightened a lot of pressure on that hole,” said Zhang, who won the NCAA individual title Monday. “It really sucked for it to end that way. It was just unawareness by Sophie, but I didn’t think much of it.” The Ducks lost the first two matches, then rallied to win the next two, leaving … [Read more...] about 2022 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship: Stanford edges Oregon for second national title

Michelle Wie West to step away from LPGA Tour after U.S. Women’s Open, won’t rule out 2023 return
Getty Images One of the biggest names in the women's game announced on Thursday that she would be stepping away from the LPGA Tour. In an interview with Golfweek, Michelle Wie West confirmed her intent to play in next week's U.S. Women's Open at Pine Needles, but that she would steer clear of competitive golf until next year's championship. "I'm definitely not ruling anything out," said the 32-year-old . Wie West turned professional at the age of 15 with a mountain of expectations on her shoulders. While her career would not materialize into the LPGA version of Tiger Woods as many projected, Wie West was able to capture five Tour wins and her two biggest dreams: a U.S. Open crown and a degree from Stanford. "Because I accomplished both of those, I think I feel very happy in my decision now," she said. "I think if I hadn't won the U.S. Open, I'd still be out there competing week to week trying to get that U.S. Open win." Wie West bursted onto the golf scene as a … [Read more...] about Michelle Wie West to step away from LPGA Tour after U.S. Women’s Open, won’t rule out 2023 return

When the New York Rangers came back from Pittsburgh earlier in the week, they were on the brink of being eliminated by the Penguins after two bad losses on the road. Following two spirited comeback wins, they return home for a deciding Game 7 at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night (7 p.m. EDT, TBS) with some momentum on their side. “Game 7 is huge for us and now we’ve got to make sure we finish it off tomorrow and play the right way,” Rangers coach Gerard Gallant said Saturday. “We worked hard to get back. I think everybody’s really excited. … It’s a big game, for sure. It’s a lot of fun and I look forward to it.” After falling into a 3-1 series hole, the Rangers have a pair of 5-3 wins — at home and then back on the road — to even the series. In each of the last two wins, they fell behind 2-0 before surging ahead with three consecutive goals in the second periods and letting the Penguins tie it again. New York then pulled away in the third periods. Gallant said he isn’t … [Read more...] about Comeback Rangers ready to face Penguins in Game 7
