Sports NFL Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers could be heading for difficult contract negotiations, amid reports the quarterback was distinctly unhappy with the franchise’s decision to make major plans without consulting him. During the offseason, the Packers parted ways with wideout Jordy Nelson and quarterback coach Alex Van Pelt, with Rodgers reportedly completely excluded from the discussions. Yahoo Sports reported that the quarterback was “frustrated and emotional” over a perceived lack of communication from the Packers’ front office, which has dented the relationship between the parties. Ted Thompson has been praised and vilified – sometimes in the same breath – for his insight, his vision and his dogged determination to draft and develop.Since coming in to handle the Green Bay Packers football operations more than a decade ago, he has not followed anybody’s lead. His insistence on utilizing the draft and developing undrafted free agent gems has made him loved on one hand and hated on the other.Like his team that rode the roller coaster of success and failure, the work of Thompson has ridden right along with the team. When the Packers were sitting at 4-6 and the wheels seemed to have fallen off and been lost, many called for Thompson’s head. When the Packers won eight straight and made it to the NFC Championship Game through pixie dust and duct tape, as well as on the arm of Aaron Rodgers, Thompson was the man who built the ship. When the Packers were decimated by the Atlanta Falcons in said NFC Championship Game, Thompson once again became the … [Read more...] about Ted Thompson: The heat rises on Green Bay Packers GM
Following a devastating 44-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship Game, will the Green Bay Packers be in the market for a new head coach?Talk about a humbling experience. The Green Bay Packers opened the season at 4-6, ran the table to win the NFC North and then vanquished both the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys in the playoffs. Then they ran into a buzz saw at the Georgia Dome. It ended badly for Mike McCarthy’s team as the Pack was on the short end of a 44-21 score. It was the second time in three years the team fell one game short of the Super Bowl. Back in 2010 as a wild card, Green Bay won three straight road playoff games and then upended the Pittsburgh Steelers, 31-25, in Super Bowl XLV at Dallas.McCarthy’s 10-8 postseason record could be considered deceptive. He lost a wild 51-45 OT tilt in 2009 at Arizona. The four-game sweep in 2010 has been followed by 6-7 postseason ledger these past seven years.Could McCarthy be in trouble? Stranger things … [Read more...] about Green Bay Packers: 5 coaches who could replace Mike McCarthy
Winning out might be the Packers’ only way into the playoff dance, but after not only their result on Sunday, but the manner in which they dispatched of the Seattle Seahawks, inspires belief they can achieve this goal.Even with a perfect finale to the regular season, Green Bay would need help from elsewhere, whether to win the NFC North or earn a wild-card berth.Let’s make some sense of the cloudy NFC playoff picture. The divisionDetroit moved to 9-4 with a late victory over Chicago. They are two wins ahead of Minnesota and Green Bay (both 7-6). The Vikings needs the Lions to lose out, as Detroit owns the head-to-head tiebreaker between the two.Minnesota’s victory over Jacksonville puts them above .500, but their hopes of a playoff return appear slim. Not only is it improbable they win the NFC North given the tiebreaker scenarios, but they have also played poorly of late. This feels like a straight out fight for the division between the Lions and Packers. Detroit can … [Read more...] about Green Bay Packers: Playoff picture following Week 14 win over Seahawks
With only a few days to forget about a disappointing Week 6 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Chicago Bears must turn right back around and prepare themselves for a Thursday night showdown against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. The Bears (1-5) are obviously at the very bottom of the NFC North, and with a loss to the Packers in Week 7, they could possibly be the bottom feeders of the entire league.Last season, Chicago was in a similar situation heading into their matchup against Green Bay on a short week. The Bears were coming off a two-point loss to the Denver Broncos, only to go into Green Bay as underdogs and upset the Packers. After their one-point loss to the Jaguars, Chicago will be hoping to shock the football world with another win over Green Bay on the not-yet-frozen tundra.Things might be looking good for the Bears, considering that Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers hasn’t been playing at the level everyone is used to seeing. But even with that playing a … [Read more...] about Chicago Bears vs. Green Bay Packers: Who Has the Advantage?
Trading a first round draft pick for a former Heisman Trophy winner who has battled 2 serious injuries, and whose potential never seemed to full materialize in the NFL seemed like a reach to many in the analyst community. It was considered a desperate reach and a blind faith prayer, even though Sam Bradford was the best player available in a thin crop of players capable of being an NFL starting QB.Sometimes blind faith gets repaid tenfold. On Sunday a QB who has only been a Viking for 14 daysout dueled a QB who has been an almost untouchable standard of QB for over a decade. In every statistical category Sam Bradford looked every bit the top draft pick he was touted to be, as he walked all over Aaron Rodgers statistics en route to throwing for more yards than any other Vikings QB in their debut game. The Green Bay Packers saw their last lead dissipate with 10:14 remaining in the second quarter and the Minnesota Vikings never looked back. It was a tense fight back and forth as the … [Read more...] about Minnesota Vikings vs Green Bay Packers: Week 2 review and grades
Green Bay Packers Coach Mike McCarthy fully expects Sam Bradford to be under center for the Minnesota Vikings in the Sunday Night Football Border Battle.Trading a first-round draft pick is not a decision to be made lightly and the general consensus among experts and those of us general interest writers is that, in order to have the best chance at victory Sunday night’s home opener is to have the stronger-armed wild card Bradford make his Minnesota Vikings debut. The recipe for beating the up-and-coming Tennessee Titans is way different than beating the established Green Bay Packers attack. The Vikings will need to be more than just efficient passing. No matter who is under center, the Minnesota Vikings will need to exploit the youth of the interior linebackers of the Packers. It’s no secret that until Minnesota can establish its passing game that EVERY defense the Vikings offense faces will cheat the run game and leave holes in the short to intermediate … [Read more...] about Minnesota Vikings: Notes Heading Into Green Bay Packers Matchup
Green Bay Packers fans, it is time. With the roster cuts ending over this past weekend, we finally have the team that will be starting Week 1 determined (barring injuries) and we can begin following along in what should be an extremely enticing season, especially after the unexpected strife last season brought to much of the fan base. With no other events scheduled on the NFL calendar before the games, this is the perfect time to take one final look at the schedule and make some predictions as to how things could go.A lot can and will change between now and the end of the season, but this is a great point to map out expectations for this team, and let me just say, mine are sky high. This year we have no worries anywhere near the level of what the Jordy Nelson ACL tear or the pudginess of Eddie Lacy brought us going into 2015, and the outlook is as bright as we have seen during any given year under the Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson regime.Without further ado, let’s begin in … [Read more...] about Green Bay Packers: Predicting 2016 regular season record
Veteran pass-rusher Julius Peppers got a taste of the Super Bowl early in his career. His second NFL season ended with a 32-29 loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII. The former Carolina Panther hasn’t been back to the big game since. After eight seasons with the Panthers followed by four seasons with the Chicago Bears, Peppers is now going into his second season as an outside linebacker with the Green Bay Packers. Now going into his 14th year, the focus has never been clearer for Peppers, according to Tyler Dunne of the Journal Sentinel."Win. Win," Peppers told the Journal Sentinel. "That’s it. There’s nothing else to do but to win."I think I can speak for everybody in here—it’s all about winning. That’s all we want to do."Last season’s meltdown of a loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship was more painful for Green Bay’s seasoned veterans than it was for the young contributors, who could still make several … [Read more...] about For Green Bay Packers OLB Julius Peppers, it’s Super Bowl or bust
Julius Peppers has spent the last 13 years chasing NFL quarterbacks, and his skills in the craft have hardly waned. Last season, his first with the Green Bay Packers and as an outside linebacker, Peppers was ferocious as ever in his pass-rush.Even at 35 years old, Peppers told Pete Dougherty of Press-Gazette Media that he doesn’t feel an immediate drop-off in production approaching."Body still feels great," Peppers said, per Press-Gazette Media. "I feel like if I wanted to play—I’m saying this now, in June—that I may be able to play a couple years after this season."Peppers was the second-overall pick of the Carolina Panthers back in 2002 and played there for the first eight seasons of his career, racking up the majority of his 125.5 career sacks during that time. After four seasons and three Pro Bowls with the Chicago Bears, Peppers signed a three-year deal with the Packers. In 2014, Pro Football Focus credited Peppers with 50 sacks, hits and hurries combined, … [Read more...] about Green Bay Packers OLB Julius Peppers not slowing down at 35
