You don’t have to be an elite NFL quarterback to become the highest-paid player in league history. You just have to be pretty good — and fairly young. Over the past decade, players like Joe Flacco, Matthew Stafford, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Derek Carr have all cashed the richest paychecks the league has ever seen. Their reigns atop the NFL’s salary pyramid never lasted long, however. Each year sees a new spate of megadeals that reward franchise quarterbacks while redefining the cost of competent-to-stellar passing. In 2011, the NFL’s top salaries belonged to Peyton Manning and Tom Brady at $18 million each. RENTON, Wash. — Russell Wilson is sticking around with the Seattle Seahawks as the highest paid player in the NFL.Wilson posted a video on social media early Tuesday saying, "Seattle, we got a deal," shortly after agreeing to a $140 million, four-year extension with the Seahawks, his agent Mark Rodgers told The Associated Press. Wilson's new deal runs through the 2023 season and includes a $65 million signing bonus, a no-trade clause and $107 million in guaranteed money. But he's still not the highest-paid player in this year's big game. CNBC Make It used numbers from sports data website Spotrac to find the 2018-2019 average salary for each player on the Patriots and Los Angeles Rams. The highest-paid player: Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald, whose average annual salary is a whopping $22.5 million.
