Despite the life-changing success that has launched Georgia Hall to millionairess status, the Women’s British Open champion will honour her commitment to play alongside Dame Laura Davies in this week’s inaugural European Golf Team Championship at Gleneagles. Yet while Davies is delighted to have the newest member of the British major club by her side – and in truth, the duo must be overwhelming favorites to win gold – what most thrills the 54-year-old is the effect Hall’s breakthrough could have on the female game in this country. At just 22, Hall became Britain’s youngest women's major champion and the reception she received at Royal Lytham hinted at what it could mean. More than an hour after her two-shot victory, a crowd of children - the majority of whom were girls - congregated outside the media centre chanting "Georgia, Georgia". After her press duties were over, Hall was embraced by the adoring crowd, and so she signed all the … [Read more...] about Georgia Hall’s ‘inspirational tale’ could galvanise a new generation of British female golfers

GE’s Greenville facility is the home of its HA technology, the most efficient gas turbines in the world The cradle of the world’s most efficient turbines Calling itself the largest gas turbine manufacturing plant in the world, GE’s facility in Greenville in the US state of South Carolina strikes most first-time visitors with its scale and modernity. Imagine the size of a standard football field, then multiply it by 20; this is nearly the equivalent of the total area of the plant’s manufacturing halls. Is that impressive enough? The answer is no, because just after taking the first step inside this unique world, you will see that yellow gantry cranes are playing puzzles with giant rotors and stators, machines are automatically operated under the guidance of computers and the world’s largest and most efficient turbines are laid out in test stands, preparing for a new journey. 0 View Gallery View Comments Colorado Springs-based dpiX LLC on Thursday will begin test production on a new manufacturing line for thin-film sensors to capture images of digital X-rays, replacing glass plates now in use for medical, military and aerospace markets. The new line, the biggest investment since the company moved its headquarters to the Springs from Palo Alto, Calif., in 2011, took 1½ years to get approved, built and installed and will position dpiX to target the rapidly growing portable X-ray detector market by using lightweight foil instead of a traditional glass plate, said dpiX CEO Frank Caris. About 30 of the plant’s 150 employees work on the new line. “This the same material that is used in the latest generation of mobile phones and curved TVs,” Caris said. “Glass can easily break and add weight, while the foil weighs much less and is more rugged.” While Caris would not disclose how much dpiX has spent on the new line, he … [Read more...] about Colorado Springs technology firm dpiX launching new product line Thursday

By Jim Alexander | [email protected] | The Press-EnterpriseApril 21, 2018 at 7:59 pm LOS ANGELES — For those who may not have noticed, there’s an LPGA Tour event taking place this week with the Hollywood sign as a distinctive backdrop. It might be worth checking out. It is easy for a sports event, especially a new one, to get lost in the maelstrom that is Southern California. We do have two of just about everything, after all, and there is only so much attention to be paid, only so much bandwidth and air time and newspaper space to apportion. As for the week the Hugel-JTBC L.A. Open picked — or had picked for it — to introduce itself to SoCal? You’ve got the Dodgers playing Washington and the Angels playing the Giants, both at home. UCLA football had its spring game Saturday. The Kings and Ducks both had postseason flops to explain away the last couple of days. The Mt. SAC Relays were up and running, albeit in a temporary home in Torrance. The Galaxy … [Read more...] about Alexander: LPGA tries to build a new tradition in L.A.
