0 of 32 Tom Pennington/Getty Images There's a lot of uncertainty involved with the NFL draft. Everyone loves having a shiny new player on their team, but no matter how much due diligence and planning goes into selecting them, there's no telling exactly how much of a difference these incoming players will have in Year 1. This is true even for first-round prospects, who are generally expected to contribute right away. Coming out of the draft, fans tend to expect a first-round pick to be a star out of the gate. No matter a team's plans, though—and not every selection is made with immediate returns in mind—factors like NFL readiness, scheme fit, health and roster construction can affect how much a top draft choice actually contributes to his new team. This means that we're going to get both disappointments and surprises every year when it comes to the contributions of first-round rookies. Last year, for example, we saw No. 1 overall pick Myles Garrett impact 11 of a … [Read more...] about How Much Will Every 1st-Round Rookie Contribute in Year 1?

This is the next in a series of in-depth features on potential quarterbacks for the Bills and how quarterbacks are evaluated. “He has a cannon for an arm.” How often have we heard or said that in the assessment of a college quarterback’s worthiness as an NFL draft pick? Hue Jackson, coach of the Cleveland Browns, used those exact words to describe the right arm of top prospect Josh Allen. “I think (Browns General Manager) John (Dorsey) said it: He threw a ball that hit a guy in the sternum and you could hear it go, ‘Boom!’ ” Jackson told reporters. "I mean, he can really throw a football.” At times, it’s as if no other trait matters. Find a big arm and your passing prayers are answered. Find a big arm and expect big success. The Browns, who own the first and fourth overall picks in the draft that begins Thursday night, have seemingly been on an endless quest to be successful. Is Wyoming's Allen their answer? And if … [Read more...] about Path to the Passer: How much does a strong arm matter?
Okay, really, how much water do we need? The Mayo Clinic says there’s no one-size-fits-all answer for this because of differences in exercise, environment, overall health and factors like pregnancy or breast-feeding. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine says a rough estimate is about 15.5 cups of fluids for men and about 11.5 cups of fluids a day for women, but what you eat also contributes to your fluid needs. (Fruit is almost all water, for example.) • The Mayo Clinic suggests drinking a glass of water or other calorie-free beverage with each meal and between each meal, as well as before, during and after exercise, and when you’re feeling hungry. (Thirst is often confused with hunger.)• Almost 300 million Americans, the vast majority, get their tap water from public water systems. The Environmental Protection Agency requires monitoring for more than 80 drinking water contaminants, which are included in annual water quality reports if … [Read more...] about How much water do I need? How many games makes a 'true' fan? And how many games should be watched start to finish? by Cody Benjamin 2h ago • 6 min read It was a Friday afternoon, and the Philadelphia Phillies were a still a day away from hosting their own weekend fish fry and dropping 20 on the Miami Marlins.Freshly removed from watching the Phils' first series against the New York Mets, I spent a few minutes talking baseball with a good friend from New Jersey, the resident Mets fan among my long-distance college buddies. (He also roots for the Steelers and the 76ers, so it's a wonder we still converse at all.)But in between the usual chitchat about Gabe Kapler's #analytics, Matt Harvey's health and the 2018 outlook on two NL East foes, there arose some deeper curiosities. There, in a conversation fueled by the excitement of the start of a new season, came questions about how long said excitement would last.Because, unlike, say, in the fall, when your favorite football team is … [Read more...] about How much baseball do you need to watch to be a ‘true’ MLB fan? The aspiration for success is the single most natural thing in the world. It is not a trait unique to human beings alone; it is the very fundament upon which nature exists. It is what gives rise to evolution and results in life as we know it. And yet there are times, even before you begin, you not just suspect that you will not succeed, but know that you are doomed to, and, will fail. Nonetheless, you go ahead and do it anyway. Because it is not a choice, but a call to duty; like a mountaineer attempting to scale that one last impossible peak, a surgeon trying to perform the miracle that will not happen or even a letter of infatuation that you know will never be reciprocated. Failure is merely a meaningless byproduct. And so I attempt to put in words, the emotion that cannot be explained but can only be felt, the phenomenon that cannot be understood but can only be experienced and a love that cannot be rationalized but can only be succumbed and … [Read more...] about Just how much did Sachin mean to us?

While the New York Yankees desperately need to add at least one quality starting pitcher this winter if they are to have any hope of competing next year, none of the arms available on the free agent market are great fits for them as they focus on getting younger. Of course, that could change instantly if Japanese superstar Shohei Otani decides to pursue a move to MLB this offseason. To be clear, there are no signs that Otani’s club is considering posting their best player anytime soon. When MLB put a $20 million cap on posting fees for NPB players, they removed all incentive for Japanese organization’s to sell their elite talents to the highest bidder. Otani is worth far more than $20 million to the Nippon-Ham Fighters.Still, there has long been rumors that Otani has a handshake agreement with his club that they will allow him to make the transition to the United States when he decides he wants to do so. With the thin free agent class this year, and several big market clubs … [Read more...] about How Much Would the Yankees Spend to Land Shohei Otani?

Danny Ainge holds final say whenever the Boston Celtics have a big decision to make. He's their general manager, and he's very good at what he does. But how much influence does he let in from the rest of Boston's front office? And leading up to the draft, how much does he take from head coach Brad Stevens, someone who obviously has an eye for talent and understands how certain players can fit beside one another? Here's more from Boston.com:"Danny Ainge has the final say; there’s no mystery there. But does he have the most significant one? In other words, whose opinion should hold more water; the man tasked with taking a team from the lottery to championship contention, or the promising coach employed to achieve that same goal with those players on the court and in the locker room? Would Ainge ever defer to the man with a mental map of how everything should shake out on the floor?"A lot of voices whisper in Ainge's ear, and Stevens should be one of them. He's a highly … [Read more...] about How much influence does Brad Stevens have on the draft?
If you look down the list of car owners in this year’s Chase for the Sprint Cup, you will quickly see there are several owners with multiple cars in the Chase. Everyone knows the names — Hendrick Motorsports, Roush Fenway Racing, Penske Racing, etc. Now, the question I have been getting asked a lot by fans is, how much do drivers care or focus on having a teammate in the Chase? From where I sit, my teammate is just one of the other 11 guys standing in the way of the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup championship. So I really don’t see a teammate. I just see another guy I have to beat. I am paid by my owner and our sponsor to do my job and make the other 11 guys look bad. To give you another analogy, it would be like a family competition. You know, the ones where you are trying to beat your dad in basketball or your brother racing bikes. For instance, I’m a big hunter. I have introduced my son into the sport of hunting ,as well. We like to have friendly, well, mostly … [Read more...] about How much value does a teammate have?
