MANILA - Three United Nations special rapporteurs are set to investigate alleged human rights violations committed against Senator Leila de Lima under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, the detained senator's camp said Friday. The UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences and Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers will look into De Lima's case, the lawmaker's camp said in a statement. The development came months after De Lima sought the help of the UN Human Rights Council's (UNHRC) Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) to look into her case. "The Working Group concludes that the violations of Ms. De Lima’s rights to a fair trial are of such gravity as to render her deprivation of liberty arbitrary," the UN body said in a statement. MANILA- The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) called on the Duterte administration Thursday to fulfill its duty to protect everyone, including human rights defenders. This after United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders Michel Forst released a report calling for an end to killings and intimidation. CHR spokesperson Jacqueline De Guia stressed that the rights of human rights defenders are included in the mandate of the government to protect its citizens' rights. “We call on the government in the performance of their duty to protect everyone and that they must also protect the rights of human rights defenders. Human rights defenders must not be looked upon negatively, but rather as supporters of the government in the fulfillment of their human rights obligation,” De Guia said. PRAGUE (Reuters) - Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis said on Monday he would step down from a government council dealing with European Union subsidies to avert any suspicion of conflict of interest over funds for his former business group. The Agrofert group receives EU subsidies in a combination of non-discretionary direct payments for farming and for business, environmental and other projects.
