Australian Open: Barty party over as semi-final bound Muchova stuns world number one

· February 17, 2021 ·

Leading by a set and 2-0 in the second, Barty looked on track to reach back-to-back semi-finals at Melbourne Park, where she was bidding to become the first Australian woman to advance to the final since 1980 and first to lift the trophy since 1978. But Czech 25th seed Muchova spoiled the 'Barty party' on Rod Laver Arena as her star opponent – unable to stop the rot – sensationally crashed out on Wednesday. Muchova, whose only previous win against a top-five player came against Karolina Pliskova at Wimbledon two years ago, will contest her maiden major semi-final as either Jennifer Brady or Jessica Pegula await. Played behind closed doors on the final day of a five-day state-wide lockdown in Victoria, Barty initially showed no mercy in warm and sunny conditions midweek. Barty, who had lost the second-fewest games (20) en route to the last eight, raced out to a 5-0 lead in just 16 minutes – Muchova managing to avoid a first-set bagel in the only positive in an otherwise … [Read more...] about Australian Open: Barty party over as semi-final bound Muchova stuns world number one

Rublev streak ended, Shapovalov stunned as Karatsev and Harris make history in Dubai

· March 20, 2021 ·

Rublev had won 23 consecutive matches at this level, second only to Roger Federer (28), but Karatsev finally ended the Russian's remarkable run to progress to his first ATP singles final. Karatsev, who incredibly went from qualifying to the semi-finals of the Australian Open this year, defeated his compatriot 6-2 4-6 6-4. He became the first Wild Card to reach the final since Thomas Muster in 1997, doing so by hitting 41 winners and forcing 16 break points – of which he won four – during two hours and 12 minutes on court. "It was a really tight match [against a] tough opponent," Karatsev said in his on-court interview. "It was an unbelievable performance [from Andrey]. He didn't lose a match at an ATP 500 in [one year]. Everything was decided in one or two points, I feel happy." @AsKaratsev is into his first ATP Tour singles final! He ends Andrey Rublev's ATP 500 winning streak at 23 matches with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory in Dubai. pic.twitter.com/3cw8XYqiX8 — ATP … [Read more...] about Rublev streak ended, Shapovalov stunned as Karatsev and Harris make history in Dubai

Jim Harbaugh backs Don Brown after Michigan’s loss to Indiana

· November 7, 2020 ·

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Michigan football team once again suffered a surprising loss, and it was once again largely at the hands of a woeful defensive effort. This time, the Wolverines allowed 38 points, 460 yards of offense and 28 first downs to No. 13 Indiana en route to a 38-21 loss. Throughout the game, Michigan fans continued to place blame on defensive coordinator Don Brown. Once viewed as among the best defensive coordinators in the game, Brown’s defense has surrendered 36.0 points per game over Michigan’s last five games, including four losses. After the game, Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh backed Brown, however, stating that he still holds confidence in the veteran coach’s ability to change course. “Yes I do,” Harbaugh said. “Very much so. I love all of our coaches, every coach on this staff. They work extremely hard, their schemes are very good and they’re coaching good. Just keep forging ahead, stay after it to make that next step. Critical step.” Rather, when … [Read more...] about Jim Harbaugh backs Don Brown after Michigan’s loss to Indiana

NCAA opens up weight lifting facility for women’s teams

· March 20, 2021 ·

SAN ANTONIO — Teams at the NCAA women’s basketball tournament finally have a weight room. A day after the NCAA was heavily criticized for not having an adequate facility for the women’s teams to lift, the organization created a fully stocked workout room at the convention center near the practice courts. The NCAA had originally told teams in a manual that there wouldn’t be a weight room facility until after the second round when only 16 teams would remain. They changed that plan after a tweet from Stanford strength coach Ali Kershner and a video from Oregon’s Sedonia Prince went viral with nearly 16 million views showing off a single rack of dumbbells and yoga mats. That set off a backlash condemning the inequities between the men’s and women’s tournaments that drew the attention of NBA and WNBA players as well as former coaches. The men had a fully stocked weight room before the start of their tournament. NCAA basketball administrators apologized to the women’s basketball … [Read more...] about NCAA opens up weight lifting facility for women’s teams

Afghanistan anger stars by switching captain before ICC Cricket World Cup 2019

· April 5, 2019 ·

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has brought Afghan's four-year captaincy across all three formats to a close, naming Rahmat Shah, Gulbadin Naib and 20-year-old Rashid as the new skippers in Tests, ODIs and Twenty20s respectively. The move comes less than two months before the start of Afghanistan's second World Cup campaign in England and Wales. "The World Cup provides us with the opportunity to play against nine full members," ACB chairman Azizullah Fazli told ESPNcricinfo. "We thought it is a good time to introduce a change in leadership." But young star Rashid and veteran Nabi - Afghan's predecessor, who captained the side at the 2015 tournament - are both unhappy with the call. Rashid said in a Twitter post: "With all the respect to the selection committee, I strongly disagree with the decision as it is irresponsible and bias. "As we have the Cricket World Cup in front of us, captain Asghar Afghan should remain as our team captain. His captaincy is highly … [Read more...] about Afghanistan anger stars by switching captain before ICC Cricket World Cup 2019
