England were bundled out for 205 after skipper Joe Root won the toss and decided to bat first. At stumps, India's score read 24/1 with Rohit (8) and Pujara (15) at the crease -- trailing the visitors by 181 runs in the first innings. After a disappointing show with the bat, England got off to a flying start with the ball as James Anderson struck with the third ball of the innings. The pace spearhead trapped Gill (0) in front of the stumps as India lost a wicket with no run on the board. But Rohit and Pujara ensured that was the end of the visitors' joy on the day as they played out the remaining 11.3 overs without losing any wicket. Earlier, Axar Patel hogged the limelight with his four-wicket haul while R Ashwin scalped three as England was bundled out for 205. While it was Mohammad Siraj who picked the all-important wicket of Root in the first session, Ashwin broke the deadlock in the third session as he dismissed Ollie Pope. Pope's wicket sparked a collapse from which England … [Read more...] about India vs England, 4th Test: Day 1 report: Hosts in command after Axar Patel scalps four wickets

India vs England, 4th Test: Axar Patel stars with 4 wickets as visitors bowled out for 205
While it was Mohammed Siraj who picked the all-important wicket of Joe Root in the first session, Ashwin broke the deadlock in the third session as he dismissed Ollie Pope. Pope's wicket sparked a collapse from which England couldn't really recover. The visitors went down from 166/5 to 205 all out within 14.3 overs, losing half of their side for 39 runs as Axar struck twice in one over. Ashwin dismissed Pope a few minutes into the third session. Pope got unlucky as the inside edge hit the back pad and popped to short-leg fielder Shubman Gill. India's senior off-spinner then dismissed Ben Foakes in the 66th over to reduce the visitors to 170/7. Minutes later Axar dismissed Dan Lawrence and Dom Bess to leave England reeling at 189/9. It looked as the visiting side would get bundled out soon, but Jack Leach and James Anderson took England over the 200-run mark for the first time since their marathon total of 578 in the opening Test in Chennai. But Ashwin ended Leach's stint shortly … [Read more...] about India vs England, 4th Test: Axar Patel stars with 4 wickets as visitors bowled out for 205
India vs England, 4th Test: Michael Vaughan slams England batsmen for poor batting on perfect pitch
England skipper Joe Root won the toss and opted to bat first, but the batters failed to make the most and lost wickets quickly in the first session of play. Vaughan, who has been quite vocal in his criticism of the pitches used in the series, called this pitch "perfect" and blamed England batters for failing to score runs. Taking to Twitter Vaughan wrote, "England's batting so far worse than any of the last few Tests ... This Pitch is a perfect surface to get a big first innings score ... No spin ... Ball coming onto the Bat ... Very poor Batting so far ... #INDvENG." Left-arm spinner Axar Patel's twin strike and Mohammed Siraj's prized scalp of Joe Root helped India gain an upper hand in the first session. England openers Dominic Sibley and Zak Crawley saw off the first five overs bowled by the Indian pacers -- Ishant Sharma and Siraj, who has come into the side in place of Jasprit Bumrah. However, the introduction of Axar in the sixth over brought immediate reward for the hosts … [Read more...] about India vs England, 4th Test: Michael Vaughan slams England batsmen for poor batting on perfect pitch
India vs England, 4th Test: Mohammed Siraj revels in Joe Root dismissal
Stokes was swearing at me, Virat bhai handled that well: Siraj Root was trapped before the wicket by Siraj, who bowled a beautiful inswinger which would have hit the middle and leg stump. "I wanted to set Root up bowling away going deliveries. And then I thought during the start of a new over, I should bring one back in. I could execute it as I had planned and it gave me great satisfaction. Mazaa aa gaya (It was fun)," Siraj said about dismissal. Similarly, he had done his homework on Jonny Bairstow's apparent weakness against in-coming deliveries. The in-cutter that got Bairstow was bowled at more than 146 kmph. Stokes faces India accusation but says Kohli spat was 'nothing untoward' "Bairstow, I wasn't bowling him at a lot of pace at the start. ...but whatever footages I have seen of him, he gets out to in-swinging deliveries. So I wanted to bowl in one area and bring it back consistently and it worked," he said. His skipper Virat Kohli on the day mostly used him … [Read more...] about India vs England, 4th Test: Mohammed Siraj revels in Joe Root dismissal
India vs England: Joe Root’s side bowled out for 205 on another disappointing day with the bat
England endured another disappointing outing with the bat in India, being bowled out for 205 on day one of the fourth Test in Ahmedabad, before a James Anderson strike with the ball briefly lifted spirits late on. The visitors were again undone by Axar Patel (4-68), as the left-arm spinner took his wicket tally to 22 for his three maiden Test appearances in the series, and this coming on a surface that didn't turn as much as the one used for the two-day third Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium last week. Ben Stokes (55) scored a 24th Test half-century, while Dan Lawrence (46), recalled to the side to strengthen the batting, did just that with some useful runs from No 7 in the order, but England never threatened to post a considerable first-innings score despite again having first use of the pitch after winning the toss. Fourth Test scorecard: India vs England Day One in Ahmedabad - as it happened Lawrence, along with Dom Bess, was one of two changes to the … [Read more...] about India vs England: Joe Root’s side bowled out for 205 on another disappointing day with the bat
