With the NHL salary cap flat for the near future, a lot of pending free agents are kicking themselves. (Sorry, Taylor Hall and Alex Pietrangelo .) But the “ free agent frenzy ” can still inspire teams to open their wallets. Heck, the Wild just handed $42M to defensive defenseman Jonas Brodin . You know what gets the wallets cracking even more? Thoughts of adding that clutch piece. That logic can really fly out the window when a player drives his team’s playoff success, especially when that ends with a raising of the Stanley Cup. Let’s look at top free agents from the remaining teams in the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs: which Dallas Stars, New York Islanders, and Tampa Bay Lightning free agents might be bumping up their value? Of course, Anton Khudobin is as prominent as a sliding Semyon Varlamov here. Let’s start with the team we already know is headed to the 2020 Stanley Cup Final . Anton Khudobin finally getting credit during Dallas Stars playoff run
With Ben Bishop on the shelf, the Dallas Stars could have cratered, but instead Anton Khudobin has been a revelation. And maybe it’s a rise we should have seen coming. Even if Khudobin takes a step back as the Stars face the Golden Knights in Game 4 on Saturday (8 p.m. ET – NBC – livestream ), it’s already been an impressive journey. And there’s plenty of evidence that his strong play is no fluke. Anton Khudobin has been huge for Dallas Stars — and not just during the playoffs Following the Stars’ exciting Game 3 overtime win against the Golden Knights, everyone from coach Rick Bowness to captain Jamie Benn praised Khudobin’s play. Benn called Khudobin’s play “unreal.” “We don’t get into overtime without him,” Bowness said . “He made some huge saves, especially on the penalty kill after we challenged, and so give him a lot of credit tonight. We don’t win it without his play.” Frankly, the Stars likely wouldn’t have made it to the NHL playoffs these past two seasons … [Read more...] about Anton Khudobin finally getting credit during Dallas Stars playoff run
Islanders playoff run puts Lou Lamoriello GM of the Year work on display
While his Islanders are in the middle of their deepest playoff run in ages, Lou Lamoriello received the 2020 GM of the Year Award on Saturday. Considering how a GM’s job is to manage the present and the future (and trifling/thrifty/erratic/etc. owners), it normally feels strange to hand out such an honor for the year. But, in Lamoriello’s case, it’s oddly fitting. That’s because time will tell if his investments will work out in the long-term, but right now? Yeah, his moves are looking pretty spiffy. You’ll get another chance to observe the fruits of Lamoriello’s labor as the Islanders take on the Lightning in Game 4 on Saturday (3 p.m. ET – NBC: livestream ). [ NBC 2020 STANLEY CUP PLAYOFF HUB ] Recent bets paying off … so far Consider trade deadline( -ish ) additions in Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Andy Greene . Over time, it’s plausible that Pageau’s immediate extension (six years, $30M, with no-trade clauses) could really bite the Islanders, and they gave … [Read more...] about Islanders playoff run puts Lou Lamoriello GM of the Year work on display
College football realignment news: Notre Dame on deck; Pac-12, Big 12 could merge; SEC vs. Big Ten playoff?
USATSI The shock is wearing off ... right? Or maybe Trojans and Bruins preparing for Big Noon games (9 a.m. PT!) is still going to take some getting used to. Fourth of July weekend is upon us, so we're going to assume realignment is taking a couple of days off. We need it. USC and UCLA need it. They need the time to buy parkas, hire tutors for five-hour plane rides and develop a taste for cheese curds. Such is the lingering impact of the two West Coast icons headed to the Big Ten. Now, it's time to consider next steps. Notre Dame is a talking point until it decided it's not. Its ongoing dance with conference membership goes back nearly a century. The Pac-12 is already on record as aggressively pursuing expansion. The Big 12 hasn't revealed a plan, if there it has one. It could stay at the 12 ready to go in 2025, or as industry insiders are suggesting, pick off as many Pac-12 schools as is financially wise and possibly send the Pac-12 to the dustbin of history. Then … [Read more...] about College football realignment news: Notre Dame on deck; Pac-12, Big 12 could merge; SEC vs. Big Ten playoff?
Jesse Puljujarvi is the player you want to trade for this offseason
It seems quite likely that Jesse Puljujarvi has played his last game as a member of the Edmonton Oilers. There are a number of factors at play here including Edmonton’s salary cap crunch, his status as a restricted free agent, as well as the fact there seems to be an equal amount of mutual frustration from both sides. When there is this much smoke, there is usually a reason for it. Assuming the Oilers do move him in the coming days, weeks, or months, it has the potential to be a regrettable move for them and a nice win for the team that acquires him on the cheap. Just how cheap? According to Sportsnet’s Mark Spector this past week, the market for Puljujarvi seems to range somewhere between a second-or third-round pick , which is a price that almost any team in the league should be willing to gamble on. They should be willing to do that even if the price is higher. For starters, the odds of a second-or third-round pick (or even a mid-late first-round pick) turning into a … [Read more...] about Jesse Puljujarvi is the player you want to trade for this offseason
How Dallas Stars built roster that made it to 2020 Stanley Cup Final
As we await Game 1 of the 2020 Stanley Cup Final ( Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC; livestream ), let’s reflect on how the Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lightning put together playoff rosters. Much like how they play, the Stars and Lightning got to the 2020 Stanley Cup Final building in different ways. Maybe that’s a message to teams trying to figure out how to copy their Stanley Cup blueprints? Let’s start with the Dallas Stars, built by GM of the Yea r finalist Jim Nill . How Dallas Stars built their Stanley Cup roster The house that fifth-round picks built? As PHT discussed back in 2018 , the Stars haven’t always drafted well. Once you move beyond “obvious” high first-rounders (like Stars phenom Miro Heiskanen , selected third overall in 2017), a team can make or break its fortunes based on getting mid-first-rounders right. Dallas shows that you can still cobble together a competitive team even if you do sometimes barely make contact. Take a look at their … [Read more...] about How Dallas Stars built roster that made it to 2020 Stanley Cup Final
NASCAR Power Rankings: Chase Elliott re-takes the lead after winning at Nashville
Getty Images This season, no driver in the NASCAR Cup Series has been able to clearly assert dominance when it comes to race wins. A full 17 races in, five different drivers are tied for the lead in wins, with all in that category having two apiece. But in another category, one driver -- Chase Elliott -- has clearly been ahead of the competition. In the race for the regular season championship, Chase Elliott has either led the Cup Series points standings or been tied for the lead since Atlanta in March. And whenever his lead has seemed vulnerable, he's always responded. After a poor run at Gateway saw his lead shrink to just nine points, Elliott is now 30 points ahead of Ross Chastain in the regular season standings after getting his second win of the year at Nashville. With Elliott's victory, the top of our CBS Sports NASCAR Power Rankings now mirror the top of the Cup Series standings. Elliott first and Chastain second, followed by Ryan Blaney in third and Kyle Busch in … [Read more...] about NASCAR Power Rankings: Chase Elliott re-takes the lead after winning at Nashville

NBA free agency: Goran Dragic agrees to one-year deal with Bulls, per report
Getty Images Goran Dragic has found a new NBA home. The veteran guard has agreed to a one-year deal worth $2.9 million with the Chicago Bulls , according to The Athletic . The Bulls will be Dragic's sixth team in the league, as he has previously spent time with the Phoenix Suns , Houston Rockets , Miami Heat , Toronto Raptors and Brooklyn Nets . Dragic, 36, is clearly in the twilight of his career, but he still has a little bit left in the tank, as he showed with the Nets last season. In 16 regular-season games with the team at the end of the season, Dragic averaged 7.3 points, 4.8 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game -- solid production for a backup. Despite his advanced age, Dragic clearly isn't ready to call it a career. He said back in April after the Nets were eliminated from the playoffs by the Boston Celtics that he hoped to play "two or three more years." In Chicago, Dragic will join a backcourt that already includes Lonzo Ball , Alex Caruso , … [Read more...] about NBA free agency: Goran Dragic agrees to one-year deal with Bulls, per report
NBA offseason winners and losers: Rockets loving the Brooklyn chaos, Jazz set up for multiple rebuild routes
USATSI One thing not a lot of people are talking about with all the Brooklyn Nets drama is how much the Rockets stand to benefit. Houston owns Brooklyn's 2024 and 2026 first-round picks as well as the right to swap first-round picks with the Nets in 2023, 2025 and 2027. If the Nets get worse, which looks like a certainty once Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving are traded, those picks that Houston owns suddenly become a lot more valuable. That makes Houston but one of many offseason winners as we're into Day 4 of the free agency period. We'll slowly be factoring in draft results as we flesh out this full list of 2022 offseason winners and losers. This post will continue to update. Here's what we have so far.
