Jaguar has today scooped the prestigious European Car of the Year award. The British manufacturer’s first all-electric car — called the I-Pace — was crowned Europe’s best ahead of this week's Geneva International Motor Show. It triumphed over six other finalists including the Ford Focus, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, and the Peugeot 508. Ian Callum, director of design at Jaguar, said: “This is a great honour, not only because it’s an electric car. “Why should people be surprised electric cars win awards? This is the future, you better all accept that. “The other thing is this is the first Jaguar to win this in the number of years the award has been going. “In my 40 years in the business, it’s certainly the most exciting car I have worked on.” The award was launched in the 1960s by a collective of car magazines from across Europe, including Italy’s Auto, the UK’s Autocar and France’s L'Automobile Magazine. … [Read more...] about European Car of the Year 2019: Jaguar’s all-electric I-Pace model wins prestigious prize

Mark Phelan Detroit Free Press Published 7:00 AM EST Nov 17, 2018 I just cast my votes for the auto industry’s top awards: North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year. I’ll tell you which vehicles I voted for, and why, in a minute, but first, here’s how the awards work: After evaluating vehicles all year, ballots from the 50-plus jurors were due Nov. 15 to Deloitte accountants. To be eligible, a vehicle must be entirely new or very significantly changed. A new drivetrain or body style for an existing vehicle isn’t enough. It’s one of the highest standards among all best-vehicle awards. Jurors consider a number of factors, including value, innovation, design, safety and performance. Each juror had 25 points to divide among the semifinalists. No vehicle can get more than 10 points. Jurors must vote for at least three vehicles. You can divide your points among as many as you like. The top three in each category will be announced Nov. 28 … [Read more...] about Here’s how I voted for NACTOY awards — and why
EVision chairman Hugh Edeleanu had been hoping for some Kent MPs to add some weight to the launch of the new all-electric Jaguar I-PACE.But on Wednesday, as the revolutionary Jaguar arrived in Kent for the first time, they were nowhere to be seen."Two MPs called off because they have to go to the House of Commons because of Brexit," said Mr Edeleanu, speaking at the electric car hire depot on the Medway City Estate in Strood. "I did tell them this is far more important but they didn't seem to agree."That was meant as a joke but in years to come how will history judge the importance of Brexit in comparison with climate change and the technological advancements needed to combat it?If he was jesting about Brexit, Mr Edeleanu wasn't joking about the significance of electric car technology."We're excited about the Jaguar I-PACE and we're excited about electric cars in general," he added. "I'm sure people all those years ago thought steam engines were the future and then along came the … [Read more...] about Electric Jaguar arrives in Kent
opinion Henry Payne The Detroit News Published 11:50 PM EDT Oct 17, 2018 Open the compact Jaguar E-Pace at night, and a bright light pools on the ground below the mirrors. A graphic spells out J-A-G-U-A-R, and ... what’s this? A silhouette of a Jaguar followed by its cub. How appropriate. Fifty years after Jaguar introduced the achingly gorgeous E-Type sports car and XJ sedan, the Brit brand is birthing a litter of profitable SUVs. The big cat's DNA is evident in its I-Pace, F-Pace and E-Pace children: the brooding eyes, the soft nose, the muscled haunches. Driving my Cesium Blue cub through northern Michigan, I got plenty of looks. The landscape is awash in lookalike five-door utes these days, but the little Jag has presence with its slanted eyes, pouncing logo and 20-inch wheels. Like its cub siblings, the E-Pace only gets some of the Jaguar DNA. It’s an SUV, after all. Don’t expect a thoroughbred race-horse from Secretariat … [Read more...] about Payne: Jaguar’s E-Pace cub is cute ‘n’ porky
Mark Phelan Detroit Free Press Published 9:30 AM EDT Oct 17, 2018 Transcript of a hands-free phone call while testing a vehicle: Me: Paul? You free? A: I have a minute before a conference call. M: I want to check what you think of the Jaguar I-Pace. I’m driving one, and I hate it so much I want to crash it into a wall. A: What? I loved that vehicle. I’ll call you back in half an hour. Paul is Paul Eisenstein, auto writer and a peer whose opinions I respect, but don’t always share. The kind of person to call when you’re thinking about aiming an $86,000 electric luxury vehicle at a bridge abutment rather than spend another minute trying to adjust the air conditioning fan speed. Conversations like this are the bane of automakers, as they try to reinvent themselves with electric vehicles, self-driving robot cars, vehicles on demand and other new challenges. Some of them behave as if it’s unfair to expect them to create new types of vehicles and … [Read more...] about 2018 Jaguar I-Pace: When is a good electric car not a good car?
