Editor’s Note: The FA Women’s Super League returns on Wednesday with a likely title showdown between Manchester City and Chelsea ( NBCSN 1pm ET ). With three games to go, the two sides are currently separated by two points (Chelsea is in the lead). Ahead of the potential title decider, NBC Sports’ Joe Price-Wright ( Pro Soccer Talk ) and Alex Azzi ( On Her Turf ) caught up with Manchester City defender Abby Dahlkemper . In January, Dahlkemper became the third member of the U.S. women’s national team to sign with City, joining Rose Lavelle and Sam Mewis . This Q&A has been condensed and lightly edited for clarity. Joe Prince-Wright: Since you arrived in January, Man City has been on a pretty amazing run . What has the transition been like for you? Abby Dahlkemper: It’s been great. Report: Heat concerned about Tyler Herro’s personal life
Heat guard Tyler Herro played like a star as a rookie in the 2020 playoffs. This season, he has regressed… while continuing to embrace his celebrity status. Ethan Skolnick on the “ Inside the Paint ” podcast: Everybody is entitled to their own personal life, and we don’t try to bring it up. And, look, the greatest player in Miami Heat history, there was a lot of stuff that we knew about that we didn’t talk about. It’s just the way that this played out. And he grew through some things. And we all know who we’re both talking about. But ultimately, the team starts to get a certain level of concern. In this particular case, the team has been concerned now for months. And that’s kind of where it’s at. But they were concerned with players during the big-three era. But this one is different, because this kid is 21. It’s telling that the Heat were also concerned about similar issues when they were winning big with Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh. Though it’d be … [Read more...] about Report: Heat concerned about Tyler Herro’s personal life
Chepauk’s special night comes alive with new finishing act
NEW HERO by Kaushik Rangarajan • Published on Share Tweet Billings scored the third fastest fifty in CSK's history. © BCCI The MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai. From the outside, a towering fortress with canopy tents, myriad stairways and entrances - three of them currently out of bounds. From the inside, cricketing heaven. Like the best of venues around the world, it has an ambience of its own - history, tradition, passion, despair. Then there are the mood setters: the heroes that first put bums on seats and then take them off. And there have been that have done that here - from the Gavaskars and the Viswanaths to the Tendulkars and the Sehwags. The crowd-player bond is strong. And it needed bonds of that kind to fill up Chepauk on Tuesday (April 10) in the face of … [Read more...] about Chepauk’s special night comes alive with new finishing act
With overseas fans barred from Olympics, new moms ask: what about my baby?
Since giving birth in May 2020, U.S. women’s soccer star Alex Morgan has been able to bring her daughter Charlie on the road. “It’s important to allow mothers the option to have their kids with them while they compete. I’ve been lucky to be able to do that every single camp,” Morgan said in a U.S. soccer media call earlier this month. But Morgan is currently unclear on whether Charlie will be able to join her at this summer’s Tokyo Olympics. In March, it was announced that – due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic – overseas spectators won’t be allowed to travel to Japan for the Games. “We share the disappointment of all enthusiastic Olympic fans from around the world, and of course the families and friends of the athletes, who were planning to come to the Games,” International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said in a press release . While Morgan says she understands the decision, she is uncertain about what it will mean for her family given their specific … [Read more...] about With overseas fans barred from Olympics, new moms ask: what about my baby?
Why is Mississippi State a top-10 team in ESPN’s FPI? Here are a few guesses
I am wary of preseason rankings, particularly those aggregated by a computer. Still, I’m like anyone. I’m curious. I love seeing numbers next to team names and digging into the hows and whys. Like any college football reporter, I like to rank teams, too. I'm right. I'm wrong. Either way, the exercise sparks discussion and, more importantly, gets me thinking and leads to more research. That education, more than anything, is the fun of it. The current hot topic among analysts, number crunchers and fans is the recently updated ESPN’s Football Power Index . What is the FPI? It's a computer formula that factors in prior performances, returning starters, recruiting rankings and a coach’s tenure. If you want to dig into the details, go read the lengthy explanation of ESPN’s “predictor” formula. Arguments are rarely had when examining the top 5 of a level-headed ranking system. The FPI is not much different, but every now and then — even during the season — the FPI includes a crazy … [Read more...] about Why is Mississippi State a top-10 team in ESPN’s FPI?
