The Carolina Panthers have found their new head coach. The team announced on Thursday that Frank Reich has been hired as the sixth head coach in franchise history. The hiring of Reich comes just over two months after he was fired by the Colts as their head coach following a 3-5-1 start to the season. However, before being let go by Indy, Reich had a lot of success with the Colts, leading them to the playoffs twice during his four-and-a-half seasons with the team. The former Colts coach was one of two finalists along with with Panthers interim coach Steve Wilks, according to CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones . Wilks took over in October after the Panthers fired Matt Rhule following a 1-4 start to the season. During 12 games with the Panthers, not only did Wilks lead them to a 6-6 record, but he led them back into contention for the NFC South title. As for Reich, he originally interviewed for Carolina's head coaching job in mid-January before returning for a … [Read more...] about Panthers hire Frank Reich as head coach just months after he was fired by the Colts

Why Artur Beterbiev could achieve much more than just undisputed champion status in 2023
Queensberry Promotions As far as skilled boxers who possess an equal level of danger and knockout threat, there are very few on the planet as well-rounded and dynamic as Artur Beterbiev. Conversely, it would be difficult to find a champion this accomplished who flies so far under the radar in terms of crossover appeal. That reality is expected to change for Beterbiev (18-0, 18 KOs), the unified light heavyweight champion, should he finish 2023 by conquering the type of challenges that could be in front of him -- namely unbeaten WBA champion Dmitry Bivol -- in an attempt to become not just the undisputed champion at 175 pounds but recognition as, quite possibly, the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world. Beterbiev, who returns Saturday at London's Wembley Arena to defend his trio of titles against mandatory challenger Anthony Yarde (23-2, 22 KOs), is the only world champion in boxing with a 100% knockout rate. The native of Russia, who fights out of his adopted home of … [Read more...] about Why Artur Beterbiev could achieve much more than just undisputed champion status in 2023
Chelsea Women vs Liverpool Women: WSL match abandoned after just six minutes due to frozen pitch
The decision to abandon the Women's Super League contest between Chelsea and Liverpool at Kingsmeadow after six minutes due to a frozen pitch on Sunday has been branded 'unprofessional' by Sky Sports pundit Sue Smith. Both Chelsea manager Emma Hayes and Liverpool counterpart Matt Beard were in agreement that the match should not have gone ahead, while Smith went further with her criticism. Speaking on Monday morning's Football Show on Sky Sports News , Smith said: " I can't actually believe what happened in terms of the game starting and then being stopped as the pitch was unplayable. "The staff, the managers, the players warming up could all see that it was frozen. And you have to think of player safety. "When the goalkeeper is asking for extra padding as when she's diving, the ground is rock hard, the players were slipping all over the place, for it to go ahead for six or seven minutes and then to cancel it, I'm concerned it was allowed to happen. … [Read more...] about Chelsea Women vs Liverpool Women: WSL match abandoned after just six minutes due to frozen pitch

How Chelsea’s new spin on long-term contracts aligns with Todd Boehly’s approach as Dodgers minority owner
Getty Images The year is 2029. Graham Potter's vibrant Chelsea side are once more sweeping all ahead of them, swashbuckling in attack but with the defensive instincts that only come through years together on the training ground. Yet another Champions League is seemingly within reach for this side, who, for what feels like a generation, have grown together into a footballing force. That, perhaps, is the end vision underpinning Chelsea's radical new approach to the management of contracts at Stamford Bridge. In an era of dwindling patience and fast fixes, the Todd Boehly-led consortium that took control last summer are building a squad for the long term, whether they like it or not. Manchester City vs. Arsenal: Oleksandr Zinchenko is making his former club pay for their generosity
Getty Images It may yet be the most telling mistake Manchester City have made in recent seasons. The moments that cost them a English league three-peat -- as sizeable a mark of greatness as any in this country -- might have come before a ball was kicked when they sold first Gabriel Jesus and then Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal . Not even the Gunners' own sales of Ashley Cole, Emmanuel Adebayor and Robin van Persie compare as an act of self-sabotage; Arsenal did not forge contenders with those sales nor did they have much of a title challenge to handicap. They had a stadium to finance. Pep Guardiola had no such concerns in sending two squad players to north London. It was the move the players wanted and the Premier League champions wanted to do right by them. City did not see this Arsenal emerging, the one they will face first in Friday's FA Cup fourth-round tie, a mere warmup act to the title showdown that their meeting on February 15 may yet be. If they had, then the … [Read more...] about Manchester City vs. Arsenal: Oleksandr Zinchenko is making his former club pay for their generosity

Ian Desmond announces he’ll sit out 2020 MLB season in thoughtful message concerning race in America, baseball
Colorado Rockies outfielder Ian Desmond joined Mike Leake , Ryan Zimmerman , and Joe Ross by announcing he would opt out of the Major League Baseball season. Desmond addressed his decision in an Instagram post on Monday that touched on an array of issues, including racism in baseball and society, his experience as a biracial person in America, and the role Little League played in his life as he was growing up in Sarasota, Florida. You can (and should) read Desmond's post by clicking here . For a taste, here's the conclusion, in which he outlines why he's staying home this summer. The COVID-19 pandemic has made this baseball season one that is a risk I am not comfortable taking. But that doesn't mean I'm leaving baseball behind for the year. I'll be right here, at my old Little League, and I'm working with everyone involved to make sure we get Sarasota Youth Baseball back on track. It's what I can do, in the scheme of so much. So, I am. With a pregnant wife and four … [Read more...] about Ian Desmond announces he’ll sit out 2020 MLB season in thoughtful message concerning race in America, baseball
Padres leave the postseason on a sour note, but the best is yet to come for one of MLB’s most exciting teams
Getty Images While I'd never include the word, "exactly" in a phrase like this, I'll keep it more generic and say that I have an idea how most die-hard Padres fans feel right now. If you don't know why, that's OK. This is no place to elaborate. I'll just ask you to trust me. I've been in a very similar spot as a fan and it worked out pretty damn well. What you just experienced, Padres fans, was the year before the year. This doesn't necessarily mean the Padres are going to win the World Series next year. Winning it all is very difficult and requires so much along the way, including getting lots of breaks. Ask the team that just extinguished the Padres' exciting 2020 season. The Dodgers have been one of the best teams in baseball for years and still don't have a ring. What I mean about the year before the year is that before 2020, there were still questions on if this Padres group could actually be the one to start making the leap. After all, there were some reasons for … [Read more...] about Padres leave the postseason on a sour note, but the best is yet to come for one of MLB’s most exciting teams
