UFC’s Holloway-Ortega card shows Toronto is a fight town, for the record
By Morgan Campbell Sports Reporter Sun., Dec. 9, 2018 UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway and challenger Brian Ortega set a record in Saturday’s main event at the Scotiabank Arena. No single bout in the fight promotion’s 25-year history had featured more significant strikes — successfully landed punches, kicks, elbows and so on — than Holloway and Ortega, who combined for 400. Those blows weren’t evenly distributed. Where Ortega landed 110 of them, Holloway connected with 290, bloodying a game but outclassed Ortega en route to a fourth-round technical knockout. Other important stats to emerge from UFC 231 didn’t break records, but sent an important message to organizers. According to the UFC, 19,039 spectators attended Saturday’s card. That figure represents complete sellout, and the second-largest crowd the UFC has drawn in Toronto. And the $3.28 million in gate receipts represent an 82 per cent boost over UFC … [Read more...] about UFC’s Holloway-Ortega card shows Toronto is a fight town, for the record
Max Holloway, Brian Ortega promise a UFC bout without the extracurriculars
By Morgan Campbell Sports Reporter Wed., Oct. 10, 2018 Four days after UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov followed up his emphatic win over Conor McGregor by leaping from the octagon to attack one of McGregor’s friends, the post-fight brawl still dominates the mainstream conversation about mixed martial arts. But early sales stats indicate Saturday’s event will sell more than 2 million pay per views, giving fighters like Max Holloway, in town to promote his Dec. 8 title defence at Scotiabank Arena against Brian Ortega, reason to think misbehaviour boosts business. Holloway and the undefeated Ortega are as respectful as McGregor is arrogant, and share a respect that runs as deep as the antipathy McGregor gins up … [Read more...] about Max Holloway, Brian Ortega promise a UFC bout without the extracurriculars
