The vitriol surrounding Kiffin's departure was so bad, in fact, that when he returned to Neyland Stadium for the first time as the Tide's offensive coordinator in 2014, Alabama security considered putting him in a bulletproof vest. MORE: Lane Kiffin checks out coaches' wives Kiffin, now head coach at Florida Atlantic, recounted his triumphant return to Neyland in a podcast interview with ESPN — thankfully, the anger directed at him pretty much amounted to profanity. "It’s crazy. They were literally talking about like — from the bus in — a bulletproof vest," Kiffin said on the podcast. "I’m like, ‘Come on, … [Read more...] about Alabama tried to make Lane Kiffin wear bulletproof vest at Tennessee
One of the most fascinating — if not necessarily important — week one contests is Oklahoma’s home opener against Lane Kiffin’s FAU. Kiffin had a great inaugural season at “Last Strike U” in 2017, going 11-3 while fielding an offense that ranked sixth nationally in opponent-adjusted S&P+. Kiffin had already begun to explore RPO spread offense at Alabama, turning Amari Cooper into a horrifying weapon in 2014 by having him run routes attached to runs for Derrick Henry or T.J. Yeldon. At FAU, the Owls built a similar offense that unleashed sophomore RB Devin Singletary for a 1,918-yard season. Oklahoma’s defensive reputation under Bob Stoops already took some hits when he brought back his little brother Mike Stoops and edged Brent Venables to Clemson. OU’s defense fell as low as 55th in 2016 S&P+, while Clemson became an annual top-10 defense. But after Bob retired, the 2017 Oklahoma defense went off the rails, finishing 101st in … [Read more...] about How many points can Lane Kiffin score on Mike Stoops?
Offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin of the Alabama Crimson Tide walks off the field after their 34-20 win over the Tennessee Volunteers at Neyland Stadium on October 25, 2014 in Knoxville, Tennessee. (Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images North America) BOCA RATON — Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin had a feeling his return to Tennessee in 2014, nearly five years after unceremoniously leaving the Volunteers for USC, was going to be far from friendly. All Kiffin, now entering his second season at FAU, was expecting were “mean words” and boos. Police and security working the game, perhaps for good reason, believed Kiffin was in more danger than he realized. “It’s crazy. They were literally talking about like — from the bus in — a bulletproof vest,” Kiffin told ESPN’s Marty Smith on “Marty Smith’s America: The Podcast” this week. “I’m like, ‘Come on, guys. This is football.’ They said, … [Read more...] about FAU coach Lane Kiffin says he was asked to wear bulletproof vest during 2014 return to Tennessee
Kiffin told the story on Marty Smith's podcast by Tom Fornelli @TomFornelli moments ago • 1 min read In today's episode of "People Think Tennessee Football Fans Are Crazy," we turn to the latest episode of "Marty Smith's America: The Podcast." The ESPN reporter had former Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin on and while discussing the time Kiffin returned to Knoxville as the offensive coordinator at Alabama, the current FAU coach dropped an interesting anecdote.Apparently, the security team wanted Kiffin to wear a bullet-proof vest."It's crazy. They were literally talking about like -- from the bus in -- a bulletproof vest. I'm like, 'Come on, guys. This is football.' They said, 'No, really.' They had security with me the whole way, even walking on the field and stuff like that," Kiffin said. "I'm just like 'I'm not wearing a vest, guys. All right?' That's a little bit over the top. It was all in fun. There was a lot of mean words said -- four-letter … [Read more...] about Lane Kiffin says security wanted him to wear bulletproof vest during return to Tennessee
Florida Atlantic Owls head coach Lane Kiffin holds up 10 fingers as fans cheer 10 more years. Kiffin agreed to a contract extension before the Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl in Boca Raton, Florida on December 19, 2017. (Allen Eyestone / The Palm Beach Post) BOCA RATON — At this rate, the questions about why Lane Kiffin hired Charlie Weis Jr., 25, to be the offensive coordinator at Florida Atlantic might outnumber the questions about where Kiffin will be coaching next season. Over two months before FAU attempts to defend their Conference USA championship and emerge as an elite program under Kiffin, the second-year Owls coach is still fielding answers about why he chose Weis, who has never been a position coach, as his new offensive coordinator. Kiffin once again defended his decision to hire Weis in an interview with ESPN.com. “Age is irrelevant. Experience is relevant,” Kiffin said. “I can be 50 years old, and if I’ve only … [Read more...] about Lane Kiffin defends hiring 25-year-old Charlie Weis Jr. as offensive coordinator in ESPN interview
