Diamond Images With the NFL now appealing Deshaun Watson's six-game suspension, there's a very real chance that his punishment could get worse in the coming weeks. The NFL originally wanted Watson suspended for at least a year, and now, the league will be gunning to actually make that happen, according to CBS Sport NFL Insider Jonathan Jones . Although Judge Sue Robinson ordered the six-game suspension, Roger Goodell (or someone he designates) will now have final say in the case because he's the one who oversees the appeal process. The NFL filing an appeal in a case where the NFL is in charge of the appeal process makes it hard to imagine a scenario where the NFL doesn't add a substantial amount of games to Watson's suspension. Watson could have avoided all of this if he had settled his case with the NFL and he had a chance to do just that before Robinson delivered her judgement on Monday. According to ESPN.com , in the days leading up to Robinson's verdict, both the … [Read more...] about Deshaun Watson shot down this settlement offer from the NFL that would have suspended him for less than a year

Deshaun Watson suspension: NFL, NFLPA negotiating potential settlement as appeal ruling looms
USATSI Deshaun Watson's immediate NFL future currently lies in the hands of former New Jersey Attorney General Peter C. Harvey, designated by the league to hear the appeal of initial disciplinary recommendations for the Browns quarterback. With Harvey's deliberation looming, however, the NFL and NFL Players Association are in "active settlement negotiations," according to CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones and the result likely to allow him to take the field in 2022. Former U.S. District Judge Sue L. Robinson, jointly appointed by the NFL and NFLPA to recommend discipline for Watson, initially proposed a six-game suspension for the QB, who faced 24 civil lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct this offseason. The NFL quickly appealed the ruling, with commissioner Roger Goodell seeking at least a full-season ban for Watson after a league investigation revealed a pattern of "predatory" behavior from the former Texans QB in dozens of private massage sessions. UCLA agrees to settlement north of $67 million in Under Armour dispute; report
UCLA agreed to a settlement with Under Armour worth about $67.5 million, according to The LA Times' Ben Bolch . The dispute began about two years ago when Under Armour unilaterally cancelled the contract between the two entities which was worth $280 million over 15 years, bringing UCLA to sue the apparel company due to a breach of contract. The two sides officially reached the agreement in May. The LA Times report also states that the settlement includes a mutual non-disparagement agreement that was approved by the UC Board of Regents. UCLA incurred $102.8-million of debt to its athletic department, caused in part by the loss of the Under Armour deal. A fter the Bruins announced last month that they'd be leaving the Pac-12 for the Big Ten, they are expected to earn more than double in annual TV money than they were expected to if they stayed in the Pac-12. "Under Armour has recently made the difficult decision to discontinue our partnership with UCLA, as we have … [Read more...] about UCLA agrees to settlement north of $67 million in Under Armour dispute; report
Agent’s Take: Dissecting and trying to make sense of the Deshaun Watson discipline case
Diamond Images The long-anticipated decision of whether Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson violated the NFL 's personal conduct policy was issued on Monday by disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson, who was jointly appointed by the NFL and NFLPA. Watson's case was the first under a revamped process in the NFL collective bargaining agreement where commissioner Roger Goodell is no longer the sole arbiter of personal conduct discipline. The retired U.S. District Court judge suspended Watson six games for violating the policy without imposing a fine. Since suspensions are without pay, Watson forfeits $345,000 (or 6/18ths of the $1.035 million 2022 base salary) because he earns $57,500 each of the 18 weeks in the regular season. None of Watson's $44.935 million signing bonus in the fully guaranteed, five-year contract worth $230 million he signed in March as a part of trade from the Texans is in jeopardy because of the way the contract is structured. Robinson also thought it was … [Read more...] about Agent’s Take: Dissecting and trying to make sense of the Deshaun Watson discipline case

Browns’ Deshaun Watson ‘truly sorry’ for off-field actions as NFL’s appeal of his suspension is ongoing
Deshaun Watson is playing in an NFL game for the first time in 19 months with the Cleveland Browns taking on the Jacksonville Jaguars in the club's preseason opener. While the quarterback can take part in the exhibition, his status for the regular season is still very much up in the air. Disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson, who initially oversaw Watson's case, recommended a six-game suspension due to the quarterback recently facing 24 civil lawsuits that accused him of sexual misconduct during massage sessions during his time with the Houston Texans . The NFL has since appealed that ruling , as is their right in the CBA, and is pushing for a year-long ban. Before heading to TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville for the exhibition, Watson spoke with CBS Sports' Aditi Kinkhabwala and was specifically asked about Robinson's note in her ruling that Watson has not shown any remorse for his actions. "I'm truly sorry to all the women that I've impacted in this situation," he … [Read more...] about Browns’ Deshaun Watson ‘truly sorry’ for off-field actions as NFL’s appeal of his suspension is ongoing
