By Stephen Whyno The Associated Press Tues., May 15, 2018 WASHINGTON—Victor Hedman scored his first goal of the playoffs and added two assists, and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 36 saves to help the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Washington Capitals 4-2 in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference final Tuesday night and cut their series deficit to 2-1. Hedman had the primary assist on power-play goals by Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov and was a key part of three big penalty kills that gave Tampa Bay some much-needed momentum. Determined to create the kind of shift he thought could turn the East final around after back-to-back home losses, the Norris Trophy finalist as the NHL’s top defenceman was one of the most dominant players on the ice and extended his point streak to eight games. PITTSBURGH — After the glorious sighs of relief, the locker-room cheers and the occasional curse word, the Washington Capitals packed their equipment into bags, the start of a process for which the franchise has been waiting 20 years: preparing for the Eastern Conference finals. The second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs has been a roadblock for most of the roster — just Brooks Orpik, Lars Eller and Matt Niskanen have ever gotten this far in the postseason before — and while Monday night’s series win over the Pittsburgh Penguins was cause for celebration, the Capitals also wanted to maintain perspective. Yes, this team has already accomplished more than any other Washington club in recent memory. No, it’s not ready to be done yet. “As a group, we wanted to give our city more, but more doesn’t mean a conference final. More is a Stanley Cup,” goaltender Braden Holtby said. “The goal isn’t to get past the second round,” … [Read more...] about The Washington Capitals finally beat the Pittsburgh Penguins. PITTSBURGH — Evgeny Kuznetsov’s breakway goal 5:27 into overtime gave the Washington Capitals a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 6 on Monday night, and a berth in the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 20 years. Kuznetsov took a lead pass from Alexander Ovechkin and tucked the puck by Matt Murray to end Pittsburgh’s two-year reign as Stanley Cup champions and propel the Capitals into the NHL’s final four for just the third time in franchise history. Braden Holtby stopped 21 shots for the Capitals, who will face Tampa Bay in the Eastern Conference finals. Alex Chiasson scored his first playoff goal in four years during a taut, tight contest through regulation. Kris Letang scored for the Penguins and Murray finished with 28 saves but couldn’t close his legs fast enough to stop Kuznetsov’s forehand flick from in close as Pittsburgh’s bid at becoming the first team in 35 years to win three consecutive Cups came to an abrupt … [Read more...] about Washington Capitals beat Pittsburgh Penguins, advance to first conference final in 20 years
Could the curse finally be coming to an end? The Washington Capitals defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-3 on Saturday night to take a 3-2 series lead, putting the two-time defending Stanley Cup champs on the brink of playoff elimination and putting the Capitals on the brink of ending a curse that has plagued them for over two decades. The Penguins are 9-1 all-time against the Capitals in the playoffs, including winning the past seven encounters dating back to 1995. Most recently, the Capitals have been shown the door in consecutive seasons in the second round by the Penguins, this despite the Capitals owning a superior regular season record. This time, the Capitals might actually prove their worth. The Capitals were resilient on Game 5. After Jamie Oleksiak gave the Penguins an early lead in the first period, the Capitals rallied late in the frame, scoring twice in 33 seconds. The Caps found themselves in penalty trouble in the second period and got behind 3-2 after Sidney Crosby and … [Read more...] about Washington Capitals one win away from ending playoff curse
