Wedgewood shines as Devils sneak by Bruins, snap losing streak

· March 8, 2021 ·

Goaltending was always going to be one of the most important factors for the New Jersey Devils this season. It hasn’t looked exactly like they hoped it would (Corey Crawford retired before the season; Mackenzie Blackwood missed time due to COVID protocols), but it is still the easiest path forward for them to be competitive for the rest of this season. They got it on Sunday afternoon in a 1-0 win over the Boston Bruins. Scott Wedgewood was fantastic in the win, stopping all 40 shots he faced to record his second shutout of the season. His only two wins this season have been via shutout. His play allowed the Devils to stay in the game long enough for Kyle Palmeiri to break a scoreless tie with less than five minutes to play in the third period. [ Your 2020-21 NHL On NBC TV Schedule ] The win snaps what had been a five-game losing streak for the Devils and is only their second win over their past 10 games. It is also their first regulation win since a 3-2 win over this … [Read more...] about Wedgewood shines as Devils sneak by Bruins, snap losing streak

Beal’s 33 points, Westbrook’s triple-double lead Wizards past shorthanded Lakers

· February 23, 2021 ·

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Bradley Beal scored six of his 33 points on three consecutive possessions late in overtime, and the Washington Wizards extended their longest winning streak in three years to five straight with a 127-124 victory over the slumping Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night. Russell Westbrook scored six of his 32 points in overtime for the Wizards, who rallied from a 17-point deficit in the second half. Washington then took advantage of a missed free throw by LeBron James late in regulation and went on to its first win over the Lakers at Staples Center since March 2017. “It feels different, in a great way,” Beal said of the Wizards’ impressive five-game run against Boston, Houston, Denver, Portland and the Lakers. “It feels great, but at the same time, we still haven’t done a damn thing. We realize that, and we keep telling each other that. We’ve still got bad habits we need to break, but we don’t discount what we did.” Kentavious Caldwell-Pope hit a 3-pointer … [Read more...] about Beal’s 33 points, Westbrook’s triple-double lead Wizards past shorthanded Lakers

Kevin Durant leads Brooklyn past Warriors in Golden State reunion

· February 14, 2021 ·

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Kevin Durant offered hugs and handshakes all around, then left a winner in his reunion with the Warriors. Durant did a bit of everything in his first trip back to the Bay Area to play the team he helped capture two championships over three years, scoring 20 points in the Brooklyn Nets’ 134-117 victory against Golden State on Saturday night. “My time here at Golden State was so much fun,” Durant said. “It was such a big learning experience, especially learning the game of basketball, a different philosophy. I’m going to take that with me for the rest of my life.” The NBA Finals MVP during both title runs, Durant missed his initial three shots before making a 3-pointer at the 5:49 mark of the first quarter and finished 8 for 19 from the floor and 1 of 6 on 3s. Pal Stephen Curry didn’t have his best stroke either, going 10 of 17 for 27 points and 2 for 9 from deep as cold-shooting Golden State lost its third straight to the Nets and missed a chance at its … [Read more...] about Kevin Durant leads Brooklyn past Warriors in Golden State reunion

Embiid returns to snap 76ers’ losing streak, NBA-leading Jazz stay hot

· February 18, 2021 ·

Embiid had scored 35 points in back-to-back games before back tightness caused him to miss Monday's defeat to the high-flying Utah Jazz – a third straight loss – but the three-time All Star came back in style. The star center claimed a 31-point, 11-rebound double-double, adding nine assists, as the 76ers dug deep against the Rockets to condemn Houston to a seventh defeat in a row midweek. Philadelphia's win improved the 76ers to 19-10 atop of the Eastern Conference, while Western Conference leaders the Jazz extended their winning run to nine games with a 114-96 triumph against the Los Angeles Clippers. The Jazz have won 20 of their past 21 games to set the pace in the NBA this season. Elsewhere, the Portland Trail Blazers made it a 3-0 road trip with a 126-124 win against the New Orleans Pelicans as Damian Lillard scorched to 43 points and 16 assists after dropping the winning three-pointer in the final seconds. Pelicans star Zion Williamson hit back with a career-high 36 … [Read more...] about Embiid returns to snap 76ers’ losing streak, NBA-leading Jazz stay hot
