Nets star Kyrie Irving (right shoulder recovery) joined former MVP Kevin Durant (hamstring) on the sidelines for Saturday's clash. Their absence proved too much for James Harden to carry, with the MVP candidate finishing the game on the bench in his casuals as the Mavericks won comfortably. Harden scored 29 points, with seven rebounds and six assists for Brooklyn, who were jumped by the Mavs in a 38-26 opening quarter. Despite the Nets closing to within four points at half-time, the Mavericks were never headed, led by Doncic – the All-Star posting 27 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Doncic won special praise from Harden post-game, who said: "He never lets anyone speed him up, and he gets what he wants. We all know he has a very, very bright future. The Mavs got a special one." The result leaves the Nets 22-13 in the Eastern Conference, while the Mavericks remain in playoffs contention with a 16-16 record in the west. Indian shuttlers Varun, Malvika clinch gold medals at the 2021 Uganda International
In the action-packed final matches, Varun registered a hard-fought 21-18, 16-21, 21-17 win over seventh seeded Sankar Muthusamy to lift his maiden senior international men’s singles title while second-seed Malvika had to work hard during her come-from-behind 17-21, 25-23, 21-10 victory against compatriot Anupama Upadhyaya in the women singles category. The junior World No. 2 Varun, who has been a consistent performer on junior circuit and clinched his sixth title earlier this year, won the first game convincingly before losing the second. However, the 17-year-old looked in complete control in the decider and wrapped up the match comfortably in his favour. Meanwhile in the women singles summit clash, Haryana girl Anupama started off well to take early lead by winning the first game. However, the 19-year-old Malvika recovered well in time and was rewarded for her never give up attitude as the Nagpur girl worked hard to win the next two games as well as the gold medals. Swiss Open: PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal may face off in semifinals; all eyes on Chirag-Satwik
Indian men's singles players, too, have tasted success in this tournament with Sameer Verma, HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth emerging victorious in 2018, 2016 and 2015 respectively and B Sai Praneeth finishing runners-up in the last edition. All four will be looking to relive the moments and extend India's good run at the USD 140,000 event which will also resume the extended Olympic qualifying period. It was here at St. Jakobshalle venue that Olympic silver medallist Sindhu had claimed the world championship gold in 2019, her last title before the COVID-19 pandemic disruption. The 25-year-old from Hyderabad, seeded second, will look to go the distance again as she opens her campaign against Turkey's Neslihan Yigit. Sindhu didn't have a good outing in the three events in Thailand recently but the road to the quarterfinal here looks smooth for the Indian where she is likely to confront fifth seed Thai Busanan Ongbamrungphan, an opponent she had beaten at the Toyota Thailand Open … [Read more...] about Swiss Open: PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal may face off in semifinals; all eyes on Chirag-Satwik
ICC Cricket World Cup 2019: Complicated wordings, zeal to make climax more exciting denied New Zealand title
First, there was a deflection of the throw from the fielder that had deflected off a diving Ben Stokes' bat to go for four boundary runs and the home team was awarded six runs, making the equation a lot easier for them. And then, after the Super Over too ended in a tie, England were awarded the game by the virtue of hitting more boundaries. WC Special | Stats There is something eerie about the ICC rules for big events. They make simple things complicated in an effort to import a football-like excitement in games that go down to the wire. The irony is that while some of the ICC's rules are too complicated (especially their wordings that look like real legal deals!), there are others that appear flimsy and shallow, particularly when seen in the context of a tournament of the magnitude of the World Cup. First, about the deflection rule. It was a simple incident of the ball hitting the running batsman and getting deflected to reach the boundary. An unintentional act in … [Read more...] about ICC Cricket World Cup 2019: Complicated wordings, zeal to make climax more exciting denied New Zealand title
NHL Power Rankings: Kaprizov, Zuccarello helping Wild make big climb
In this week’s edition of the NHL Power Rankings the Lightning reclaim the top spot, the Canucks hit bottom, and the Wild make a big climb into the top 10. The Wild are the intriguing story this week thanks to a six-game winning streak. Forwards Mats Zuccarello and Kirill Kaprizov are leading the way on this recent surge. Zuccarello has been outstanding since making his season debut with 11 points in his first seven games , while Kaprizov has been worth the hype as one of the league’s top rookies. They still have the defense, they are getting the goaltending, and now they have a potential star forward to make plays with the puck. The West Division has three strong contenders in Colorado, Vegas, and a health St. Louis team at the top. But that fourth playoff spot has always been wide open given the rest of the division. Minnesota is looking to take advantage of it and grab it. This week the Wild are in the No. 8 spot of our NHL Power Rankings.
