Manchester City and France footballer Benjamin Mendy stands trial Wednesday for the alleged rape and assault of seven women, which could see his playing career end in jail if convicted. Mendy, 28, is due at Chester Crown Court in northwest England to face eight counts of rape, one count of sexual assault and one count of attempted rape, relating to seven young women. He pleaded not guilty in May to nine of the 10 charges, but was subsequently hit with the further rape count which has not yet been put to him in a court. All the alleged offences are said to have taken place at Mendy's home address in Prestbury near Macclesfield, also in northwest England, between October 2018 and August last year. He is standing trial before a jury along with his co-defendant Louis Saha Matturie, 40, who has also pleaded not guilty. National captain Sunil Chhetri was on Tuesday named the AIFF Men's Footballer of the Year for the seventh time while Manisha Kalyan was picked for her maiden honour in the women's category for the 2021-22 season. Chhetri and Kalyan were nominated as the winners by their respective national team coaches Igor Stimac and Thomas Dennerby. Chhetri, the third highest goal scorer among active international players, was first named for the award in 2007. He then went on to win it in 2011, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018-19 seasons. "Sunil was our highest goal-scorer, scoring 5 goals, and also the Player of the Tournament in the SAFF Cup," Stimac said. "Furthermore, he led from the front scoring 4 goals in 3 games in the 3rd round of AFC Asian Cup qualifiers in Kolkata. A UK court on Tuesday heard the ex-girlfriend of former Manchester United star Ryan Giggs tearfully recount years of "aggressive" and manipulative behaviour by the footballer at his trial for assaulting and coercively controlling her. On the second day of the high-profile trial, the jury watched footage of a police interview with Giggs's former partner, Kate Greville, given in November 2020 after police were called to the couple's home following an incident.  At times tearfully, she described what she called a "pattern" of controlling behaviour and said it had driven her, at one point, to feel suicidal.
