Maryland says former athletic director Kevin Anderson used school money from a discretionary account to pay for the legal defense of two football players accused of sexual misconduct last year. The school issued a statement to the Washington Post on Thursday, adding that it only learned of Anderson’s actions when it received an invoice. Maryland says Anderson was told to sever ties with the company, but ignored the school’s directive. When contacted by phone on Thursday, Anderson called the report “inaccurate.” Maryland coach DJ Durkin, currently on leave amid an investigation into the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair in June, was reportedly the first person to contact the law firm after it was hired by Anderson. Anderson resigned from his job in April, but he had gone on a six-month sabbatical in October after the school became aware of the situation. The players, who were not identified, have since left the school — one of them expelled … [Read more...] about Ex-Maryland AD used school funds to defend accused players

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- University of Maryland President Wallace D. Loh and Athletic Director Damon Evans said most of the right things when they faced the media Tuesday afternoon to announce several developments relating to the heatstroke death of football player Jordan McNair. They described a meeting earlier in the day with McNair's parents during which they apologized and took responsibility for the medical missteps that led to the tragedy and an allegedly flawed football culture. They also announced the formation of an independent panel to investigate the damning allegations about the program revealed first in reporting by ESPN on Saturday. But one big question they did not answer was why Evans is not on administrative leave along with football coach DJ Durkin? This tragedy happened on Evans' watch, too, and when he walked to the podium and introduced himself as the "new" athletic director, he forgot to mention that he used to be the deputy athletic director under Kevin Anderson with … [Read more...] about Why isn’t Maryland AD on leave, too?

Maryland is putting head football coach DJ Durkin on administrative leave while an investigation continues into the circumstances surrounding the death of player Jordan McNair. Offensive coordinator Matt Canada will be the interim head coach. Durkin, 40, had been Maryland’s coach since the 2016 season. A former defensive coordinator at Michigan and Florida, Durkin was an understudy of both Jim Harbaugh and Urban Meyer. He improved Maryland’s recruiting considerably and made a bowl game in his first season before injuries and a hard schedule dropped the Terps to 4-8 in 2017. He was 10-15 in his two years, but his departure isn’t because of the on-field results. In June, McNair died after collapsing during a team workout on May 30. McNair’s death brought more questions than answers about the program’s handling of his health. McNair, who was a listed 325 pounds as a freshman, struggled amid a series of 10 110-yard sprints in hot weather. The university … [Read more...] about Maryland coach DJ Durkin placed on administrative leave
