Earlier this week, the NCAA approved a one-time transfer rule for all student-athletes. With the new rule, which comes 2.5 years after the introduction of the transfer portal, athletes can transfer and have immediate eligibility at their new school. While this move gives more freedom to college athletes, not everyone is convinced it is the right decision. Several college coaches have gone on record and expressed concerns over the potential impact of immediate eligibility for transfers. Among them is Florida football coach Dan Mullen , who pointed to a couple of his players who developed into stars later in their playing careers. “Look at Kyle Trask , Kyle Pitts and Kadarius Toney , guys that developed a little later. Former Minnesota guard Jamal Mashburn Jr. announced Friday that he will head to New Mexico. The move reunites him with former Minnesota head coach Richard Pitino , who took the job at New Mexico shortly after he was fired by Minnesota last month. Mashburn took to social media to announce his decision. “Let’s get the pit jumpin!,” Mashburn Jr. wrote on Instagram . Mashburn scored double-digit points in nine of Minnesota's last ten games and ended his true freshman season with a points per game average of 8.2 on 35% shooting. He played in all 29 of Minnesota's games, starting right of them. A former 247Sports Composite three-star recruit from the class of 2020, Mashburn was the composite's No. 136 overall player and No. 17 combo guard out of Miami (Fla.) attended high school at Brewster Academy (NH). The Big Ten football officiating was criticized last season due to questionable calls, penalties out of nowhere and weird replay reviews. Well, it seems like they’re ready for the season again as displayed in Ohio State’s spring game on Saturday. Sure, it was a clean game throughout the first half as the Buckeyes staff evaluated their team in the early goings of the preseason. But, a weird penalty marker found its way to the turf during the second quarter. There was actually a sideline warning. Reminder: only Ohio State was playing against themselves. In Charles Davis’ NFL mock draft 1.0 , the former pro defensive back has the Dallas Cowboys selecting Alabama cornerback Patrick Surtain with the No. 10 overall pick in the first round. Surtain is considered to be one of the top corners in this year’s draft and is Davis’ second defensive player of the board in his latest mock. It’s hard to not pay attention to all the chatter about Surtain possibly ending up with the Cowboys. ESPN’s Matt Miller believes he’ll be the first defensive player taken in the draft. In an appearance on ESPN Radio’s Keyshawn, JWill and Zubin Friday morning, Surtain’s father, Patrick Surtain Sr., a former NFL defensive back from 1998-2008, was asked about the Cowboys connection. It’s standard to see college alumni come back to the spring game for football. Justin Fields is just the latest to do so. Fields, who’s preparing for the NFL Draft later this month, decided to attend the Buckeyes’ spring game on Saturday and watch the future of the program. Ohio State has a three-man rae to replace Fields at quarterback. Watch to see Fields reunited with the Buckeyes on Saturday.
