U.S. women’s hockey head coach Bob Corkum stepped down, citing coronavirus protocol concerns three weeks before the world championship tournament and on the eve of the team’s pre-worlds training camp. “I was not comfortable with the protocols,” Corkum wrote in a text sent to The Associated Press on Saturday without specifying his concerns. “It was a difficult decision to make, but one that I am at peace with. The team will not miss a beat. They are in great hands.” Assistant Joel Johnson was announced as interim head coach on Friday night ahead of worlds that start May 6 in Nova Scotia. RCB had said the all-rounder tested negative on his arrival at the team hotel in Chennai, but in his second test, he tested positive for the COVID-19. "We are pleased to inform that Royal Challengers Bangalore, all-rounder Daniel Sams, has joined the RCB bio-bubble on 17th April 2021 with negative reports for COVID-19," read a statement from RCB management on Saturday (April 17). "RCB medical team was in constant touch with Sams to ensure his safety and declared him fit to join the team after all the required examinations as part of the BCCI protocols," it added. Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov did on Thursday what no Russian pairs’ team had been able to do in the previous eight years – win a world title – and they did so in their senior world championships debut. In doing so, they became the youngest pairs’ world champions since the legendary Russians Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergey Grinkov , who won four titles from 1986-90 while Gordeeva was a teenager. Three Stars 1. Tyler Toffoli , Montreal Canadiens. This signing has worked out better than Montreal could have ever hoped. With his two goals on Friday night — the only two goals in 2-1 Montreal win over the Calgary Flames — Toffoli topped the 20-goal mark, giving him 21 for the season in only 38 games. Going back to the 2019-20 season Toffoli has now scored 29 goals in 44 games since being traded away from the Los Angeles Kings. This has been one of the best free agent signings of the year. Montreal’s win gives it a six-point lead over the Flames for the fourth playoff spot in the North Division while still having three games in hand. Montreal has to be happy with its playoff chances at this point. 2. Jeremy Swayman , Boston Bruins.
