Bryce Harper returned to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday night as a member of the Phillies. Unsurprisingly, Nationals fans booed the hell out of Harper. The Nationals put together a pretty nice tribute video for Harper on the big screen during player introductions, but the team's fans didn't seem enthused: The fans also let Harper hear it during his first at-bat: You could say it was a bit of a clown show: Luckily for Harper, more than a few Phillies fans were in attendance to keep things at least kind of balanced: Ultimately, the fans’ reaction wasn’t much of a surprise. And why Harper was booed isn’t hard to figure out, either. The most immediate circumstances are clear: Harper had a dynamite first series with the Phillies, booming a pair of solo home runs and helping his team to a sweep of the Braves. The Nats, meanwhile, entered Tuesday’s game with one win in three tries. The early returns aren’t too great. The run-up to Harper’s … [Read more...] about Bryce Harper booed by Nationals fans in his return to Washington, D.C.

(AP Photo/Chris O'Meara) WASHINGTON — Former Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper returned to the nation’s capital Tuesday with the Philadelphia Phillies and was met with some tough love from fans who burned his jersey and a mayoral tweet that likened him to an infamous Revolutionary War traitor. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s Twitter page on Monday featured a photoshopped picture of Harper on the uniformed torso of Benedict Arnold. The tweet was quickly deleted, but drew cheers from Washington Nationals fans still fuming about Harper’s signing with a National League rival. Reunions are always awkward. Especially when you're ex is going to be there. Now, imagine he/she is there with your rival, because that's what it's going to be like for Nationals fans on Tuesday night when Bryce Harper will return to his former home in Washington, D.C. For Harper, it will be his first time back since signing a 13-year, $330 million deal that will make him a member of the division rival Phillies for the rest of his career. And the reaction from Nationals fans is, well, going to be interesting. Harper was the face of that franchise for seven seasons before moving on the Phillies, won an MVP for them, and was generally loved by the fan base. But that was then, and based on all the defaced Harper jerseys spotted around Nationals Park on Opening Day, it seems fans have moved on to the third stage of grief, anger, something that could be on full display Tuesday night when Harper and the undefeated Phillies come to town.As a Philadelphian, it's hard … [Read more...] about What they’re saying: How will Nats fans treat Bryce Harper in his return to Washington?

The D.C. mayor tweeted a picture depicting the right fielder as Benedict Arnold, which she then quickly deleted. Arnold famously betrayed the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War in 1780, defecting to Great Britain. The tweet suggested Bowser believes Harper betrayed the Nationals in the offseason, when he left the capital after seven seasons to sign with the Phillies. At the time, Harper’s 13-year $330 million deal was the largest ever in the history of professional sports, but has since been surpassed by Mike Trout’s extension with the Los Angeles Angels. During his spell in Washington, Harper won the 2012 NL Rookie of the Year Award and the 2015 NL MVP award, helping the Nationals make four playoff appearances in the process. Leaving Washington was bad enough in … [Read more...] about Bryce Harper Compared to Benedict Arnold by Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser Ahead of Phillies Game
The cities of Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., share a lot of history. After all, Philadelphia was our nation’s capital before the government eventually moved to D.C. However, with former Nationals slugger Bryce Harper leaving Washington and electing to sign with Philadelphia, and with the Phillies set to make their first trip to D.C. with Harper on the squad, that history has gotten a bit more sensitive.Enter Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. On Monday, the day before the Nats and Phillies play in D.C., Mayor Bowser tweeted and then deleted a pic of Bryce Harper likening the former National to the infamous American traitor Benedict Arnold. It’s not clear why Bowser decided to take the tweet down. Nothing in the photo was profane or obscene. Then again, with American history being taught so poorly in the public school system, perhaps she thought her joke would be lost on people?
