An inside look at South Carolina’s ‘Final Four Fridays’: How a workout program has transformed the team

August 9, 2022 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

South Carolina Athletics The distance between Columbia, S.C. and Dallas, the site for the 2023 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament, is 995.6 miles. The South Carolina Gamecocks are already getting a head start with four bicycles and weekly missions. Every Friday before the season begins, sports performance coach Molly Binetti holds one-hour workouts she calls "Final Four Fridays." Each week is different, but every session has a mission requiring the players to work as a team and visualize challenges they will face throughout the upcoming season. One of the challenges is biking the number of miles it will take to travel from Columbia to whichever city the Final Four will be held next. Binetti sets up four bicycles, and the players take turns to register the specific amount of miles needed. Sometimes the miles relate to the number of games they'll play in a season. Other times, the challenge is based on the opponents, which means the difficulty is based on teams they will be … [Read more...] about An inside look at South Carolina’s ‘Final Four Fridays’: How a workout program has transformed the team

It’s not just a medal for us, it’s an inspiration: Savita reflects on historic Commonwealth Games campaign

This incredible feat was the pinnacle of what was a roller coaster ride for the Savita-led Indian team who showed resilience to bounce back from a heartbreaking ninth place finish at the FIH Women's World Cup which took place in the Netherlands and Spain in July. The Indian team also took part in their last set of FIH Hockey Pro League matches in June in Belgium and Netherlands, where they finished third. Reflecting on the long tour, Indian Women's Hockey Team Captain Savita said, "It was a pretty long tour, there were ups and downs but it taught us a lot of things. We started the tour on a strong note by finishing third in our debut FIH Hockey Pro League 2021/22 campaign and then went through a rough patch during the World Cup. “Finishing ninth was disappointing, but it was equally important to move ahead and take positive learnings from the campaign to focus on the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. "We then had a short preparatory camp in Nottingham, where we … [Read more...] about It’s not just a medal for us, it’s an inspiration: Savita reflects on historic Commonwealth Games campaign

Commonwealth Games 2022: Highs and lows of India

August 9, 2022 by www.mykhel.com Leave a Comment

Going into Birmingham 2022, slipping out of the usual top-five was seen as a real possibility in absence of shooting, but phenomenal success in athletics and lawn bowls propelled India to a commendable fourth-place finish. About 25 per cent of India's 66 medals came from the shooting range in the previous edition held at Gold Coast, Australia, and not many believed that India will be able to touch even 50. But the country ended up with 61, courtesy unprecedented success in track and field events that delivered eight medals. As the Games concluded, with PTI inputs, myKhel.com looks at some of the highs and lows for India at Birmingham 2022. Athletics Eldhose Paul and Abdullah Aboobacker's rare 1-2 finish in triple jump will be cherished for long. Avinash Sable's silver in the 3,000M steeplechase and Tejaswin Shankar's bronze in the high jump were also a first for India while Murali Sreeshankar's silver in the long jump was the country's first since 1978. … [Read more...] about Commonwealth Games 2022: Highs and lows of India

Arizona basketball roster: Starting lineup prediction, bench rotation, depth outlook for 2022-23 season

August 9, 2022 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

Getty Images Tommy Lloyd set an impossibly high bar for first-year college basketball coaches everywhere last season as he guided Arizona to a Pac-12 regular-season championship, Pac-12 Tournament title and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament . If Year Two under the former long-time Gonzaga assistant is to be similarly fruitful, it will require the Wildcats to replace three of the top 33 picks from June's NBA Draft . Gone are Bennedict Mathurin (Pac-12 Player of the Year), Christian Koloko (Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year and Most Improved Player) and super utility man Dalen Terry, who used a late surge up draft boards to be selected No. 18 overall by the Bulls. While that's a daunting trio to lose, the Wildcats may wind up as the preseason favorite to win the Pac-12 again thanks to the remaining pieces from a rotation that was among the nation's deepest. With a trio of international stars back after playing key roles last season in Kerr Kriisa , Pelle Larsson … [Read more...] about Arizona basketball roster: Starting lineup prediction, bench rotation, depth outlook for 2022-23 season

Caleb Williams ready to face pressure head on as USC attempts to engineer historic one-year turnaround

August 9, 2022 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

Getty Images LOS ANGELES -- Caleb Williams was made for this moment. It goes beyond the promise, the responsibility, the absolute understanding of his new football life in the nation's second-largest media market. His understanding of his place in the SoCal landscape comes the instant he shakes your hand. It's more than a shake; he grasps your hand, holding it for a moment to ensure eye contact is held. "It is a pleasure meeting you," said USC's quarterback to a stranger who introduced himself. Maybe too much is made of the gravity of that moment, but the point is Williams made it his moment. He controlled the exchange for those brief seconds. A small sample size, yes, but it suggests the Oklahoma transfer has a mindset that will aid him in controlling his future surroundings as well. Williams, coach Lincoln Riley and scores of other USC transfers walk into this season with swagger. Whether they like it or not, they all joined the program to win right away. … [Read more...] about Caleb Williams ready to face pressure head on as USC attempts to engineer historic one-year turnaround

Notre Dame 99-to-0: No. 91 Josh Bryan, sophomore kicker – Inside the Irish | NBC Sports

May 16, 2022 by irish.nbcsports.com Leave a Comment

Listed measurements: 5-foot-11 ⅝, 183 pounds. 2022-23 year, eligibility: A sophomore, Bryan has all four years of his eligibility remaining after appearing in only the Georgia Tech rout last season. Depth Chart: Neither Bryan nor Arkansas State transfer Blake Grupe was particularly impressive this spring, leaving some doubt as to who will lead the way in placekicking duties, but Grupe likely has the slight edge thanks to experience. Regardless, Bryan should handle kickoff duties for Notre Dame. Recruiting: Bryan’s recruitment was a case study in pandemic recruiting. He was committed to Colorado for the longest time, not only wanting to go to Notre Dame, but also knowing the Irish wanted him. They just did not know if they would have space for him. It was not until the NCAA created some flexibility amid scholarship limits — specifically, that fifth-year kicker Jonathan Doerer would not count toward the maximum of 85 scholarships in 2021 if he used the year of … [Read more...] about Notre Dame 99-to-0: No. 91 Josh Bryan, sophomore kicker – Inside the Irish | NBC Sports

Notre Dame 99-to-0: No. 80 Cane Berrong, sophomore tight end – Inside the Irish | NBC Sports

May 24, 2022 by irish.nbcsports.com Leave a Comment

Listed measurements: 6-foot-3 ½, 235 pounds. 2022-23 year, eligibility: A sophomore, Berrong still has all four seasons of eligibility remaining after appearing in only three games as a freshman before an ACL tear ended his debut campaign. Depth Chart: If 100 percent healthy, Berrong could be in the mix to be Notre Dame’s No. 2 or 3 tight end, but as he recovers from the ACL, he is instead most accurately lumped with the pair of incoming freshmen, a bit removed from the leading trio of Michael Mayer , Kevin Bauman and Mitchell Evans. Recruiting: The Irish may not often chase the No. 35 tight end in a recruiting class, but that may not have been indicative of Berrong’s talent coming out of high school. He was, after all, an Under Armour All-American. The Georgia product turned down eight SEC programs, including his homestate power, LSU and Auburn, to choose Notre Dame. NAME, IMAGE, LIKENESS If the only NIL path a player pursues is apparel — and this is … [Read more...] about Notre Dame 99-to-0: No. 80 Cane Berrong, sophomore tight end – Inside the Irish | NBC Sports
