2023 NFL head coach tracker: Broncos trade for Sean Payton; Texans complete homecoming with DeMeco Ryans
Getty Images The 2023 NFL coaching cycle maintained what's now an 11-year trend in which there have been at least five new head coaches. This year's coaching carousel is in full swing with three of the five head-coaching vacancies now filled -- the Denver Broncos, Houston Texans and the Carolina Panthers -- and two teams are still in the interview stages for their openings in the Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts. The Denver Broncos found their replacement to replace the fired Nathaniel Hackett on Tuesday after trading a 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 second-round pick to the New Orleans Saints for their former Super Bowl Champion head coach, Sean Payton. Their hope is that he can fix Russell Wilson, whom they parted with five draft picks and three players to acquire before signing him to a five-year, $245 million contract extension, right before he had the worst year of his 11-year career in 2022. The Houston Texans also found their head coach Tuesday, … [Read more...] about 2023 NFL head coach tracker: Broncos trade for Sean Payton; Texans complete homecoming with DeMeco Ryans

New York Jets have eyes on veteran QBs Aaron Rodgers, Derek Carr, Jimmy Garoppolo for 2023 season
The New York Jets look to add a proven quarterback this offseason, and CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reports the Jets have their eyes on three veterans . While pursuing a trade for the Green Bay Packers’ Aaron Rodgers has been a popular speculation, Jones also added Jimmy Garoppolo and Derek Carr to the Jets’ search process. Garoppolo will be an unrestricted free agent, meaning the Jets wouldn’t have to trade for him, while Rodgers and Carr would force New York to part ways with assets. “They won’t limit their search to just those three quarterbacks — and sources stress it’s still early in the process — but that’s where the focus will be begin,” Jones wrote. Buzz surrounding a Rodgers effort intensified when the Jets hired Nathaniel Hackett as offensive coordinator. "The quarterback position with all the different interviews was the No. 1 concern, and rightfully so and it was simple," Jets head coach Robert Saleh said at a press conference Thursday. … [Read more...] about New York Jets have eyes on veteran QBs Aaron Rodgers, Derek Carr, Jimmy Garoppolo for 2023 season

Sean Payton to become Broncos’ next head coach after Saints, Denver reportedly finalize trade compensation
Getty Images Sean Payton is set to become the next head coach for the Denver Broncos , according to CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones . The New Orleans Saints and Broncos have finalized trade compensation for head coach Sean Payton, according to ESPN , removing the final hurdle for Payton to become Denver's next head coach. Adam Schefter adds that the trade calls for Denver's first-round pick from San Francisco (No. 30 overall) and a 2024 second-round pick will be sent to New Orleans for their 2024 third-round pick. Payton, 59, last coached for the Saints in 2021 but remains under contract, which is why a trade needs to be negotiated. His 15-year journey across the league included three-quarters of the NFC East, excluding Washington, before his run as Saints' head coach in 2013. National Signing Day 2023: Under-the-radar storylines you need to know
If Wednesday doesn't feel like a normal National Signing Day, there’s a good reason why and that’s because just over 95 percent of the blue-chip player pool is already off the market following December's Early Signing Period. Sure, we are expected to get some high-profile announcements Wednesday with five-star athlete Nyckoles Harbor , Top247 offensive lineman Chimdy Onoh , Top247 cornerback Rodrick Pleasant and twin four-star linebackers Andrew and Michael Harris all set to go public with their decisions, but National Signing Day 2023 – for the most part – is just shell of what it once was (don't tell the suits I said that). But just because Wednesday’s slate of declarations is on the lighter side doesn’t mean that what transpires over the course of the day won’t impact college football for years to come. Below, we highlight some under-the-radar storylines to keep an eye on with less than 24 hours to go. Call it the deep cuts of National … [Read more...] about National Signing Day 2023: Under-the-radar storylines you need to know
National Signing Day Eve: Buzz on the top prospects making final decisions
We are 24 hours out from National Signing Day with a few blue-chippers still contemplating their final college decision. Teams looking for potential big closes include Oregon and USC out West all the way to Georgia and South Carolina in the East and Kentucky and TCU in between. Those aren’t the only programs looking to finish strong. Here is what I think I know. The latest on Nyckoles Harbor …I know late last week I wrote I liked Maryland’s position for the nation’s No. 1 athlete recruit with Oregon rising. I’m not feeling that any longer. Sounds like confidence around the Terrapins is wavering after it appeared the local program was picking up steam in December. I still think Oregon is in the middle of it. So is South Carolina. There has been a lot of confidence around both programs. The Gamecocks have been recruiting Harbor as long as any program, gotten him to campus a few times and his relationship with the staff, players and commits is second to none. They also benefit … [Read more...] about National Signing Day Eve: Buzz on the top prospects making final decisions
