The Quentin Grimes dilemma: Knicks’ promising wing makes trading for Donovan Mitchell tricky
Getty Images As a general rule, NBA teams are hesitant to trade young, homegrown talent. This is particularly true if said talent was undervalued by the rest of the league. When executives find gems late in the first round, anywhere in the second or on the scrap heap, they get attached. These players' successes reflect well on their teams' scouting and development programs. Often they are diligent workers and beloved teammates, the kind of guys that bring good vibes to the practice facility and become fan favorites. Almost every team is obsessed with drafting and developing well, though, in part because this allows you to trade for stars. Typically, when a player like Donovan Mitchell is on the trade market, he will not be swapped for another multi-time All-Star at a similar stage of his career. He'll be swapped for draft picks and younger, cheaper players who could potentially turn into All-Stars one day. Enter 22-year-old Quentin Grimes . He's a 6-foot-4 wing with a … [Read more...] about The Quentin Grimes dilemma: Knicks’ promising wing makes trading for Donovan Mitchell tricky
Report: Lakers, Knicks, Jazz talked massive Westbrook, Mitchell trade
This needs to be emphasized up front: Not only did this trade obviously not happen, but things also remain incredibly quiet on the trade front , and no deal similar to this appears close to happening anytime soon. If ever. However, the Lakers, Knicks, and Jazz discussed a three-team trade that would have sent Donovan Mitchell to the Knicks and Russell Westbrook to the Jazz to be bought out, with a lot of picks going to Utah and other players in the mix, reports Michael Scoto of Hoopshype . The proposed three-team trade scenario included Westbrook going to Utah and getting bought out. Utah would send Donovan Mitchell to the Knicks, a combination of two players, including Patrick Beverley and Jordan Clarkson , Bojan Bogdanovic or Malik Beasley to the Lakers, and the Jazz would receive significant draft pick compensation from the Knicks and Lakers. The Knicks also would’ve had to part with veteran salary filler(s), such as Derrick Rose to help make the salaries … [Read more...] about Report: Lakers, Knicks, Jazz talked massive Westbrook, Mitchell trade
Jets’ Mekhi Becton suffers ‘new’ knee injury and is ‘not looking good,’ coach Robert Saleh says
USATSI The New York Jets were dealt a potentially significant blow during their training camp session Monday. According to reporters on the scene , offensive tackle Mekhi Becton went down on the second play of practice and appeared to have suffered an injury to his surgically repaired right knee. After that, the 2020 first-round pick limped to the locker room and was sidelined for the rest of the day. Following practice, head coach Robert Saleh said Becton would be getting an MRI on his knee, but that there was initial optimism that the injury was not significant. However, things have changed quite a bit since then. The injury is "more concerning" than the team first thought, the NFL Network reported Monday evening, and is unrelated to the previous knee injury that kept him out nearly all of last year. Appearing on WFAN on Tuesday morning, Saleh confirmed that this is a "new injury" for Becton. While they are still waiting on second opinions, Saleh said "obviously … [Read more...] about Jets’ Mekhi Becton suffers ‘new’ knee injury and is ‘not looking good,’ coach Robert Saleh says
Deshaun Watson suspension: Roger Goodell designates former New Jersey AG Peter C. Harvey to hear NFL’s appeal
USATSI A day after the NFL announced it will appeal former U.S. District Judge Sue L. Robinson's disciplinary recommendation for Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson , the league has appointed former New Jersey Attorney General Peter C. Harvey to oversee the hearing, as CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones reports. Robinson's investigation of Watson, who was accused by 24 women of sexual assault and misconduct this offseason, concluded with a recommended six-game suspension. Now it's up to Harvey to determine whether Watson should face even stricter penalties, with the NFL reportedly seeking at least a full-season ban. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell had the power to hear the appeal himself, but by designating Harvey, he has officially redirected the next stage of the process outside his office. Harvey, however, has worked with the NFL before, and currently serves as a consulting member of the league's Diversity Advisory Committee, built to improve racial and gender … [Read more...] about Deshaun Watson suspension: Roger Goodell designates former New Jersey AG Peter C. A history of unfulfilled NBA trade requests, from Kareem to Hakeem to Pippen to Pierce to Kobe
Getty Images After reflecting on his uncharacteristically poor performance in the playoffs, a star player decided that he wanted to be traded. He informed the team at a meeting in the summer. The perennial All-Star had chosen this organization in free agency with his eyes on a championship. In the two years that he'd been on the court, though, they'd come up short. He didn't like where things were going. The trade request put the front office in an uncomfortable position. It was not looking to rebuild. Getting swept had been unpleasant, but that's what happens when you're nowhere near full strength and you run into an elite opponent. With him, the team projected to remain a contender, as long as it could stay healthy. The near 7-footer had been drilling jumpers over helpless defenders since he was drafted No. 2 overall during George W. Bush's second presidential term. It's not as if it could simply swap him for a player of equivalent talent. And so the San Antonio Spurs … [Read more...] about A history of unfulfilled NBA trade requests, from Kareem to Hakeem to Pippen to Pierce to Kobe
