A Set small text size A Set the default text size A Set large text size Were I a Melbourne Storm supporter, I’d be fuming at the apparent ‘kid gloves’ approach being taken towards the Cronulla Sharks. Now, until a series of events play out, there’s no way of knowing what has happened and what the consequences will be for events that went down in the Shire over the past few years. Maybe Shane Flanagan sent a few innocuous emails to mates at the club, enquiring after the health of their children, curious as to when pics from a recent holiday would be up on Insta (heaps likely). Maybe these salary-cap rorting allegations will be found to be a case of accidental Excel. “No, we didn’t pay that bloke $311,015 – we paid him his regular salary on the 31st of October, 2015. Someone forgot to change the cell from ‘General’ to ‘Date’. Maureen, was this you again? Classic Maureen!” And maybe all that really happened … [Read more...] about How valid is Cronulla’s 2016 premiership?

The decider is upon us! After a disrupted preparation on both sides, the Sydney Roosters and Melbourne Storm will fight it out for the right to be crowned premiers at Homebush on Sunday. There have been disruptions a plenty in the last seven days, but it’s clear the Storm have come out with the better end of the stick. After getting the better of the Cronulla Sharks last Friday in a convincing performance during their preliminary final, the biggest questions stemmed around Billy Slater. The fullback was instrumental in their grand final victory last year, his loss was felt heavily during the 2016 decider and no doubt, in his final game, he will have a key role to play again for Craig Bellamy’s side. After being pinged for a shoulder charge during the match against Cronulla, he took his case to the judiciary on Tuesday evening and managed to beat the charge, freeing him up to play in the final. The real disruptions have been at the Roosters though, who may not yet know who … [Read more...] about Sydney Roosters vs Melbourne Storm: NRL grand final preview and prediction
A banged up Cronulla Sharks will travel south for a do-or-die NRL preliminary final with a rested, refreshed and hopeful Melbourne Storm. The Storm have had everything go to plan for the second straight year, and despite their superstars ageing, look to be the best chance of a side going back-to-back in decades. After belting the North Queensland Cowboys in the 2017 grand final, it appears as if the men from Melbourne are on a trajectory to do it again against either the Rabbitohs or Roosters, although maybe not to the same level. Whichever way the cookie crumbles, it’s going to be a brilliant finish to the season. Standing in their way of making a third consecutive grand final is an always fearsome Cronulla side who beat them just weeks ago, but the week off is the best thing that could have happened for the Storm, with Nelson Asofa-Solomona returning and the duo of Billy Slater and Cameron Smith having a much-needed breather. Slater maybe less so though. While Smith has been … [Read more...] about Melbourne Storm vs Cronulla Sharks: NRL preliminary final preview and prediction
Those who were at ANZ Stadium cheering on the St George Illawarra Dragons’ men’s and women’s sides last Saturday night would have witnessed impressive individual efforts by men’s centre Zac Lomax, and his girlfriend, women’s centre Jessica Sergis. Sergis was one of the women’s best as she celebrated her 21st birthday in the Dragons’ 22-10 win over the New Zealand Warriors, scoring an impressive try in the second half and saving two others as the club won their first match in the NRL Women’s Premiership. Highlighting her toughness at such a young age, she’d been knocked out trying to tackle Broncos winger Julia Robinson the previous week, which saw the Dragons outclassed 30-4 by a more experienced Brisbane Broncos side at Suncorp Stadium. She had previously played rugby league until the age of 12, when restrictions against women playing against men were put into effect, but returned to playing the sport last year, representing both … [Read more...] about ‘SerMax’: Are Zac Lomax and Jessica Sergis the ‘Posh and Becks’ of the NRL?
Only four teams are left remaining in the premiership race, with an ancient and a modern rivalry to highlight this weekend’s preliminary final matches. The premiers of the past two seasons, the Melbourne Storm and Cronulla Sharks, will meet in one preliminary final, while the Sydney Roosters and South Sydney Rabbitohs, who have both been in the competition for over 100 years each, face off in the other. It will be up to the Sharks to ensure that the grand final is an all-Sydney affair, with the premiership trophy having left the borders of New South Wales twice in the past three years. Here is your full preview to the two preliminary finals. Storm vs Sharks This season: Sharks won 14-4 at Southern Cross Group Stadium in Round 4; Sharks won 17-14 at AAMI Park in Round 22.
