TAMPA — Finally, after practice after practice, and interview after interview talking about it, F Mathieu Joseph made his NHL debut Saturday. It was no surprise that he made the Lightning roster, not after the preseason and camp he put together. Joseph scored four goals in the preseason and finished with eight points. It seemed more likely than not that he would make the opening-day roster the further training camp progressed. But from the time GM Julien BriseBois told Joseph, 21, he made the team out of camp until Saturday's season opener against the Panthers at Amalie Arena, he had a full week to think about it.A week filled with anticipation, nerves, excitement and … waiting."Ah, I think it's … it's a big accomplishment," he said. "Being drafted in junior is an accomplishment. Being drafted into the NHL is a big accomplishment, playing in a first preseason game and playing an NHL game."The opener provided a new opportunity for forwards Adam Erne and Anthony Cirelli, … [Read more...] about After a week to think about it, Mathieu Joseph finally makes his NHL debut
Opening day nhl
With opening night against the Colorado Avalanche a little more than a week away, the Wild will face some tough decisions in the coming days. Although most of the active roster can be locked in, there are still a few spots at the end of the bench that are up in the air with two preseason games left. That will offer some of the fringe players one last chance to prove themselves before general manager Paul Fenton makes roster cuts. Here is a breakdown of the Wild roster as it stands: ROSTER LOCKS Forwards (11): Charlie Coyle, Joel Eriksson Ek, Eric Fehr, Marcus Foligno, Mikael Granlund, Jordan Greenway, Mikko Koivu, Nino Niederreiter, Zach Parise, Eric Staal, Jason Zucker Analysis: You can pretty much pencil in the top three lines: Eric Staal is going to center Jason Zucker and Mikael Granlund, Mikko Koivu is going to center Zach Parise and Nino Niederreiter, and Jordan Greenway is going to center Joel Eriksson Ek and Charlie Coyle. It’d be a shock if that wasn’t the … [Read more...] about What will the Wild lineup look like on opening night?
The Tampa Bay Lightning have been without winger Tyler Johnson for the last week after he suffered an upper-body injury in practice. While the 28-year-old is listed as day-to-day, NHL.com’s Bryan Burns writes that Tampa Bay general manager Julien BriseBois recently hinted that Johnson could miss more time than originally expected, including possibly missing the season opener.“We’re optimistic that he’ll be ready for the season opener but there are no guarantees,” Brisebois said. “In any event, we don’t expect this to be something that will be long term.”Johnson is a key player on the Lightning’s top six, as he is coming off a 21-goal, 50-point season, and the team needs him on the ice if it wants to make another Stanley Cup run this season. Stu Cowan of the Montreal Gazette writes that Montreal CanadiensJonathan Drouin, who spent his entire summer working on his skills at the center position, was a little surprised … [Read more...] about Lightning GM: ‘There are no guarantees’ Tyler Johnson will be ready for season opener
A new season looms and there are plenty of questions begging to be answered by Pete Blackburn @PeteBlackburn 12h ago • 18 min read A wild NHL offseason is officially in the rearview now that training camps are underway. Another NHL season looms right around the corner and, as always, there are plenty of questions that are begging to be answered over the course of the 82-game regular season and beyond. In anticipation of the new season, we've gone ahead and highlighted one big question every NHL team is facing as we head towards opening day in October. How healthy will Ryan Kesler be?Kesler is a key part of the Ducks' attack up front, but he was a shell of himself last year (8 goals and 14 points in 44 games) in the wake of a pretty signficant hip surgery. It was a big reason the Ducks were swept by the Sharks in the first round of the playoffs. It remains up in the air as to how much Kesler will play this year (varying reports have … [Read more...] about NHL burning questions: Here’s every team’s biggest issue entering the 2018-19 season
It remains to be seen if F Mathieu Joseph will make the Lightning's roster. If he doesn't, it certainly won't be because of a lack of opportunities.Joseph saw time on the Lightning power play and penalty kill on Tuesday at Amalie Arena when Tampa Bay faced Carolina in its first preseason game. Joseph also scored in the third period, the only goal the Lightning scored in an otherwise abysmal offensive performance. It was Joseph's first preseason goal, but this is not his first camp with the Lightning. As the Lightning's fourth-round pick in the 2015 draft, he has participated in camp before. But he has never made the roster. If Joseph stays on this trajectory, he just might sneak his way onto the opening-day roster."He just keeps taking the steps," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said after the game. "He is just a perfect example of a kid that is checking of all the boxes as he makes his way to the NHL. He is not quite there yet, but he is making a case."No, Joseph won't likely be a top six or … [Read more...] about Lightning journal: Can Mathieu Joseph sneak his way onto the opening-day roster?
