However, the Patna-born cricketer, who grew up in Jharkhand, stated that he has always idolized former India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. In a video posted on BCCI Twitter, Ishan said, "My cricketing idol while growing up was MS Dhoni , who came from the same place and also played for Jharkhand, so I really wanted to fill his shoes, and now that I am here, I will make sure that I make my team win so many other games." Dhoni visited the India dressing room on Thursday and interacted with the players ahead of the first T20 against New Zealand on Friday. India skipper Hardik Pandya on Thursday said in-form opener Shubman Gill will start the T20 series against New Zealand ahead of Prithvi Shaw , who has made a comeback to the national team. Considering Gill's sensational run in ODIs, Hardik said his selection was a no-brainer. Gill has smashed three hundreds including a double ton in his last four innings. Ishan Kishan is expected to open alongside Gill. When asked, whether Prithvi Shaw will play the first T20I, Hardik said. "No sir. Shubman has done well and will start the series. The way he is batting and was already in the team," said Hardik ahead of the first T20I. Hardik bowled with the new ball in the T20Is against Sri Lanka before doing the same in the third ODI against New Zealand on Tuesday with Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj being rested from the game. Hardik said he likes bowling with the new ball. "I have always enjoyed bowling with the new ball. India Brace For T20 Appetizer vs New Zealand Ahead Of Marquee Australia Test Series | Cricket News

January 26, 2023 by sports.ndtv.com Leave a Comment

India are set for a T20 appetizer ahead of their marquee Test series against Australia when they face the touring New Zealand in a three-match series beginning in Ranchi on Friday. With less than two weeks left for the Border Gavaskar Trophy matches against Australia that will determine India's World Test Championship Final fate, a T20 series in the midst of a packed ODI calendar ahead of the 50-over World Cup may seem purposeless. As a result, Hardik Pandya , who led a 2-1 series win over Sri Lanka earlier this month, is back leading the T20 side with some regulars and fringe players in the squad. While skipper Rohit Sharma , Virat Kohli , KL Rahul , Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami are being rested, the likes of Shubman Gill , Suryakumar Yadav , Ishan Kishan and Kuldeep Yadav will get an extended run before they assemble for Test series camp at Nagpur from February 2. There is also the welcome addition of attacking Mumbai opener Prithvi Shaw , who returns … [Read more...] about India Brace For T20 Appetizer vs New Zealand Ahead Of Marquee Australia Test Series | Cricket News

Aryna Sabalenka Overpowers Magda Linette To Set Up Elena Rybakina Final In Australian Open | Tennis News

January 26, 2023 by sports.ndtv.com Leave a Comment

Aryna Sabalenka will face Elena Rybakina in the Australian Open final after overpowering unseeded Magda Linette 7-6 (7/1), 6-2 in a semi-final played in chilly conditions on Rod Laver Arena on Thursday. Fifth seed Sabalenka's maiden Grand Slam final appearance will be against the Wimbledon champion, who earlier beat Victoria Azarenka in straight sets. "I'm super happy, super happy that I was able to get this win," said the Belarusian, who had been hoping to play her compatriot Azarenka in Saturday's showpiece. "Magda's an unbelievable player. She played really great tennis," added the 24-year-old. Sabalenka came into the match as many observers' favourite for the Melbourne crown but she had never won a Grand Slam semi-final in three previous attempts. She had led world number one Iga Swiatek 4-2 in the third set of their US Open semi-final in September before a spectacular meltdown where she lost 16 of the last 20 points. That sort of mental baggage in tennis is always … [Read more...] about Aryna Sabalenka Overpowers Magda Linette To Set Up Elena Rybakina Final In Australian Open | Tennis News

January 26, 2023 by sports.ndtv.com Leave a Comment

Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina beat Victoria Azarenka in straight sets to reach the Australian Open final on Thursday and end the Belarusian's dream of a third Melbourne title. Rybakina won their semi-final 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 and will meet Aryna Sabalenka or Magda Linette in Saturday's final. Azarenka, who won the Grand Slam in 2012 and 2013, was beaten in 1hr 41min in blustery conditions on Rod Laver Arena. The 22nd seed Rybakina had already beaten reigning French and US Open champion Iga Swiatek in the fourth round and 2017 Roland Garros winner Jelena Ostapenko in the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park. And after a tight first set, the Moscow-born 23-year-old stretched away to account for a third Grand Slam champion. "I'm super happy to be in the final. Today it was a bit tougher for me because it was different conditions," said Rybakina, who represents Kazakhstan. "I couldn't play really aggressive tennis. The ball was not going so much, but I'm happy that in the end I … [Read more...] about Elena Rybakina beats Victoria Azarenka to reach Australian Open final | Tennis News

T20I timeout for India amid ODI drills and Test hysteria

January 26, 2023 by www.cricbuzz.com Leave a Comment

NEW ZEALAND TOUR OF INDIA 2023 by Cricbuzz Staff • Last updated on Share Tweet Hardik Pandya will be leading India in the absence of several senior players © BCCI "Broadcaster ko bhi sahi cheez dikhana chahiye" (The broadcaster should show things with context). That sudden burst of Hindi in the middle of a largely English press conference summed up Rohit Sharma's gripe. Speaking in Indore after his 30th ODI century, Rohit was frustrated at the marketed narrative that he had just hit his 'first ODI hundred in three years', when the fact was that he had only played 17 ODIs since his last century. You could blame the pandemic, his unfortunate injuries or simply more 20-over tourneys in view of back-to-back T20 World Cups, but Rohit wasn't really without an ODI hundred for three years; the world watching him was. Which is why this three-match T20I series feels oddly placed nine months before an ODI World Cup. More … [Read more...] about T20I timeout for India amid ODI drills and Test hysteria

Archer’s return adds to South Africa’s qualification tall order

January 26, 2023 by www.cricbuzz.com Leave a Comment

SOUTH AFRICA VS ENGLAND, 1ST ODI by Telford Vice • Published on Share Tweet The home side's challenge won't be made easier by the confirmed return of Jofra Archer © Getty "It seems like there's an echo in the room; it's the same question," Shukri Conrad said as he glanced at various parts of the ceiling during a press conference in Bloemfontein on Thursday. He had been asked, for the third time in not quite 13 minutes, about the importance of South Africa's World Cup Super League (WCSL) series against England . The truth is self-evident. If England win all three matches, South Africa will have to make an unprecedented trip to the qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe in June and July to reach the World Cup in India in October and November. If South Africa beat England once they will need to prevail in both matches against the Netherlands on March 31 and April 2 to avoid the qualifier. Win two against England and just one … [Read more...] about Archer’s return adds to South Africa’s qualification tall order
