Western Kentucky quarterback Jarret Doege has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal less than two weeks before the Hilltoppers' season opener against Austin Peay, 247Sports’ Chris Hummer has learned. The former Bowling Green and West Virginia quarterback will transfer without playing a single snap for Western Kentucky. Doege was competing with Austin Reed for Western Kentucky’s starting quarterback job. Doege’s transfer signals that Reed, who transferred to Western Kentucky after throwing for 40 touchdowns at Division II-West Florida, will be the starter. Meanwhile, Doege immediately becomes a sign-and-play option. Doege threw for 3,048 yards with 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 2021 at West Virginia. He completed 65.2% of his passes. Doege eclipsed 300 passing yards twice last year against Texas Tech and Iowa State. He eviscerated the Cyclones' defense for 370 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions in West Virginia’s 38-31 win. “We wanted to make a … [Read more...] about Western Kentucky QB Jarret Doege enters NCAA Transfer Portal

Jets coach Robert Saleh says Joe Flacco should still be a starting QB: ‘He’s really, really talented’
© Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports It's been almost three years since Joe Flacco was a starting quarterback in the NFL . And Jets coach Robert Saleh thinks that's a major mistake. Complimenting Flacco's on- and off-field leadership as the backup to 2021 first-round pick Zach Wilson , Saleh told reporters Wednesday that he believes Flacco could -- and should -- still be a starter at 37. "He should be, in my opinion," Saleh said of Flacco as a QB1. "He could start in this league, I believe that. Sometimes this league has a tendency to pigeonhole people, or put labels on people, and then their opportunities kind of get limited. But Joe Flacco is a starting quarterback in this league. He's really, really talented." Saleh's remarks came in response to questions about Flacco's physical ability, after the coach praised the veteran's mentorship: "His presence, his demeanor, the way he goes about his business, he is fantastic. He is an open book (for Wilson and the other QBs) ... … [Read more...] about Jets coach Robert Saleh says Joe Flacco should still be a starting QB: ‘He’s really, really talented’
Kentucky football coach Mark Stoops: QB Will Levis ‘very motivated’ entering season amid NFL Mock Draft hype
Will Levis enters Year 2 as Kentucky football's starting quarterback after transferring from Penn State last February , and he has seen his name atop early 2023 NFL Mock Draft projections . Wildcats head coach Mark Stoops , however, told reporters this week as UK opened fall camp that Levis has handled the expectations properly. "I have no issues with that because he is very motivated," Stoops said, when asked about "the hype" around Levis. "He's very driven, just with his own ability." The 6-foot-3, 232-pound Levis completed 233 of 353 passes (66%) for 2,827 yards and 24 touchdowns to 13 interceptions as a junior and first-year starter during Kentucky's 2021 season. He rounded out his production with nine rushing touchdowns in 13 games. "Well, it's fantastic," Stoops said of Levis. "He's a great leader, starting with his own work ethic. One of our first principles in leadership is lead yourself, and he certainly does that well. Then he has the impact to … [Read more...] about Kentucky football coach Mark Stoops: QB Will Levis ‘very motivated’ entering season amid NFL Mock Draft hype
Clemson football: D.J. Uiagalelei opens up on Cade Klubnik, QB outlook for 2022 season
D.J. Uiagalelei entered the 2021 season with a lot of buzz, but the then-sophomore quarterback and first-year starter struggled. Turning the page to what could be a make-or-break 2022 season, Uiagalelei explained this weekend that he was feeling great and confident going into the fall, despite five-star freshman Cade Klubnik on his heels. Overall, Uiagalelei had a positive outlook for the upcoming campaign. “I have a full year of experience coming into this camp,” he said. “ I’m feeling (good) and I just have more experience. I feel like I have a different approach to this game.” Uiagalelei also lost weight and has a tighter frame entering the fall. “Yeah, I feel great — yes, sir, 100%,” Uiagalelei said. “Weight wise, I feel great. Moving around, definitely 100% better, definitely feel lighter on my feet. I feel ready to go.” Head coach Dabo Swinney was complementary of his quarterback in practice, but Uiagalelei placed an emphasis of translating the … [Read more...] about Clemson football: D.J. Jalen Hurts’ takeaways from Eagles’ 2021 season, progression for ’22 revealed by QB
Jalen Hurts enters Year 3 in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles. After becoming the full-time starting quarterback last season, the former Alabama and Oklahoma star led the Eagles to the playoffs. He and the team are hungry for more in 2022, though. Hurts acknowledged that he could improve, reflecting and explaining to Eagles team reporter and insider Dave Spadaro . “I think it's just a ton to learn from,” Hurts said. “I think the importance of, one, how you prepare the mindset of a team all together. Are we connected? Are we not? Effort will never be questioned. I will never question the effort of this team or question the effort of a guy on this team because we're all growing. That's what we have. That's what type of guys we have. It's a matter of putting it together. It's a matter of being consistent. It's a matter of being in tune to the little details that win you games and some things that lose your games, too. “So I think, personally, I've learned a lot from that … [Read more...] about Jalen Hurts’ takeaways from Eagles’ 2021 season, progression for ’22 revealed by QB
Bears QB Justin Fields building chemistry with ex-Packers WR Equanimeous St. Brown at training camp
Justin Fields enters his second year in the NFL with the Chicago Bears, and after sitting on the sidelines as a rookie and being a part of Chicago’s quarterback rotation that consisted of Andy Dalton and Nick Foles, Fields has earned the starting QB job in 2022. As QB1, Fields now gets the chance to build better relationships with his receiving core. At Bears training camp press conferences on Wednesday, Fields answered to which of the new receivers he’s developed good chemistry with. "I think E.Q., for sure — Equanimeous (St. Brown)," Fields said of whom he's built a connection with among the Bears' wide receivers. "I think also Cole, I think he's progressing every day, especially from last year — I think he's just getting better — and Byron (Pringle), for sure, and then Velus (Jones), too. I think those are all guys that I'm getting a lot of reps with and kind of getting to know how they run their routes and stuff like that." "He's been in this offense for a number of … [Read more...] about Bears QB Justin Fields building chemistry with ex-Packers WR Equanimeous St. Brown at training camp
Ohio State football QB C.J. Stroud, WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba acknowledge falling ‘short’ after Michigan loss
When Ohio State fell short of the 2021 Big Ten Championship Game, it marked the first time since 2016 that the Buckeyes did not reach Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. OSU star quarterback C.J. Stroud and wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba told Big Ten Network this week at the conference's media days — from inside the championship game's venue — that the program was determined to bounce back in the 2022 season, including beating Michigan. "I mean, we fell short of our goals and we weren't too happy with it and we've been preparing all offseason to change that and have a different outcome," Smith-Njigba said . "We want to go 15 weeks and be at SoFi (Stadium in Los Angeles) with a (College Football Playoff National Championship Game) ring on our finger, and that's our mindset. And we didn't get it done, and that's all the motivation we need." Stroud echoed Smith-Njigba, adding that accountability was a key theme of the offseason. "I think that's been the whole … [Read more...] about Ohio State football QB C.J. Stroud, WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba acknowledge falling ‘short’ after Michigan loss
NFL Draft 2023: UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson has first-round potential, according to CBS Sports
UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson is coming off his best collegiate season, and if UCLA reaches its Pac-12 Championship aspirations this fall, he will probably have had plenty to do with it. The Bruins knew when recruiting Robinson back in 2018 that he was a unique talent, and the 2022 season might be his final shot at convincing scouts that he’s a pro-level passer. In light of that, CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso included the Bruins star when listing under-the-radar candidates to become the 2023 NFL Draft's version of Joe Burrow or Zach Wilson . “For me, Thompson-Robinson's steady improvement is the most encouraging aspect of his profile entering his fifth season with the Bruins,” Trapasso wrote. “He's gone from 6.8 yards per attempt as a freshman to 8.5 last season, and he took much better care of the football with only six interceptions.” UCLA’s best season under Chip Kelly came when Thompson-Robinson shined his brightest. He threw for 2,409 yards with 21 … [Read more...] about NFL Draft 2023: UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson has first-round potential, according to CBS Sports
Starting QB Tyler Buchner’s mobility will lead Notre Dame into Ohio State – Inside the Irish | NBC Sports
As a new question pops up to plague the Notre Dame offense, the Irish at least finally answered an obvious one: Sophomore Tyler Buchner will be Notre Dame’s starting quarterback in three weeks at Ohio State, officially beating out junior Drew Pyne in a competition that always seemed headed for this resolution. “An extremely difficult decision, one that me and [offensive coordinator Tommy Rees] spent an enormous amount of time talking about,” Irish head coach Marcus Freeman said Saturday. “It’s not really a seven-practice decision. This is something we looked at last year, we looked at spring, we looked at the summer and the start of fall camp, an entire body of work. “We just felt like it was time. It was time to give the offense clarity on who is going to be the starting quarterback.” Pyne began last season as Jack Coan ’s backup, but Buchner gradually moved into that role. Neither finished the year as a particularly efficient passer, but Buchner’s 46 rushes for … [Read more...] about Starting QB Tyler Buchner’s mobility will lead Notre Dame into Ohio State – Inside the Irish | NBC Sports
