A Set small text size A Set the default text size A Set large text size I’m always on the lookout for video games and esports that are easy to dip into. There can be a huge divide for people who aren’t familiar with the gaming world and anything that can help to bridge this gap and get more people involved is always a good thing. Sometimes it’s a game that’s relatively easy to play or understand, or an esport that can be immediately watched and enjoyed by even the most clueless of spectator. If you’re really lucky, it’s both. Rocket League is by no means a newcomer to the market and has enjoyed commercial success since its release on PS4 and Microsoft platforms in 2015. It’s a simple if somewhat ridiculous game in premise – just a good old game of soccer between a few toy racing cars – which makes it a perfect platform for introduction. It’s also not too hard to play, at least at a very basic skill level, and … [Read more...] about Rocket League is coming up big

Grand final weekend continues in the Gfinity Elite Series this morning, with the Hoyts Gfinity Esports Arena hosting the Rocket League final at 10am (AEST). After a rough finish to the season, Melbourne Order willed themselves back into form last week with a strong 4-2 win over Peth Ground Zero – who’d knocked them off 3-1 barely a fortnight prior. Long considered one of the contenders in this competition, they’ll fancy themselves as strong favourites in this one. Standing in the way are their crosstown rivals – Melbourne Avant, who snuck into the playoffs with a final-round victory over the Sydney Roar, before sending shockwaves through Oceanic Rocket League with a monumental 4-2 upset of the Chiefs in the semis. While they start as massive underdogs this weekend, this is a side now full of belief – and that confidence can get you anywhere. Stirling Coates’ match preview says we’re in for an entertaining match, but it’s not looking … [Read more...] about Gfinity Elite Series live stream; Rocket League grand final live updates
$42,500 is on the line, as Melbourne’s two Gfinity Elite Series teams go head-to-head in what shapes to be a spiteful Rocket League grand final on Sunday. Melbourne Order (3rd, 3-2) started their season off in glorious fashion. They dropped just two rounds over the first three weeks, but those three wins were as good as it got in the regular season, with losses to Perth and the Sydney Chiefs putting their title claims in doubt. They got revenge over Perth in the playoffs last weekend, and now face off against their crosstown rivals in the season’s decider. Melbourne Avant (4th, 2-3), however, would still be pinching themselves about the fact they’re even here. The draftee-heavy side struggled through much of the regular season, only punching their ticket to the playoffs with a final round victory over the hapless Sydney Roar. But last week – in one of the upsets of the season, in any sport – Avant pulled off a scarcely believable 4-2 win over the globally … [Read more...] about Melbourne Order vs Melbourne Avant; Gfinity Elite Series Rocket League Grand Final preview
Day two of the Gfinity Elite Series took place this past Sunday, with the six city-based esports teams duking it out in everyone’s favourite soccer-with-cars game – Rocket League. An earlier start time of 10am (AEST) didn’t deter the spectators, with plenty of esports fans filing in to the Hoyts Gfinity Arena in Moore Park for three best-of-five Rocket League series. Like Saturday, it was the Brisbane Deceptors tackling Melbourne Order first up, with strong starts followed by stout late defending helping the Melbourne side claim tight victories in games one and two. Brisbane were able to get back in the series with a 3-0 game three win, but the Order took game four to take the series out by a scoreline of 3-1. It was a gallant effort from the newly-created Brisbane side but they just lacked the polish you see from a side who’ve been playing together for longer – like Melbourne. That said, they have every right to be very proud of taking one game off a … [Read more...] about Bad luck for Brisbane, purring in Perth; Gfinity Elite Series Rocket League recap
Over the last few weeks there’s been an abundance of build-up and hype for the upcoming fourth season of the Rocket League Championship. The new season will see team after team, divided into their three regions, come head to head with each other with the intention of making it to the World Championship stage. We’ve seen three seasons of the RLCS already, and with each season we see an almost unforeseeable increase in each team’s skill, communication, friendliness and power. With each new season providing a reset of talent, it’s easy to question what the next season will hold: with Oceania’s recent entry and the consistent increase in skill across the board for just about every team in the region, what could we be seeing for the home teams during the qualifiers for the RLCS4? Let’s begin with a brief recap of RLCS3, the first and currently only season that Oceania has participated in. With the season kicking off strongly and the region hosting the … [Read more...] about What are Oceania’s chances in the Rocket League World Championship?
