Adam Silver makes his case for why there should be NBA All-Star Game

· February 27, 2021 ·

MIAMI  — NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has heard all the reasons why the league should not have an All-Star Game in Atlanta next weekend. He has two reasons why the league should: the fans and the game’s economy. Silver, in an interview with The Associated Press, said the fact that about 100 million votes were cast by fans for All-Star starters shows that the people who follow the game globally wanted the league’s midseason showcase to be played. And the league, he said, didn’t want to disappoint them. “It’s the largest factor, the amount of engagement we get from our fans around All-Star,” Silver said. “Historically, in the modern digital age, we have roughly 100 million people vote for our All-Stars, and we came out about the same this year even with a shortened voting period.” Players have raised some questions about why the game is necessary and the risks involved in playing it during a pandemic. The league has said it will fly players into Atlanta privately, keep them in a … [Read more...] about Adam Silver makes his case for why there should be NBA All-Star Game

Albert Pujols says he’ll decide future after season with Angels

· February 28, 2021 ·

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Albert Pujols woke up from a nap last Monday in Arizona to find several hundred messages and missed calls on his phone. While he was sleeping, the Los Angeles Angels slugger’s wife, Deidre, had put up a complimentary Instagram post about her husband that was widely interpreted to mean Pujols had decided to retire after this season, his 21st in the majors. “Hey, that’s the life we’re living on social media,” Pujols said Saturday with a chuckle. “It’s sad that everybody just had to run with it.” The 41-year-old slugger quickly reiterated what he has been saying for months: He hasn’t decided whether he will continue playing after the conclusion of his 10-year, $240 million contract with the Angels this fall, and he won’t make or announce a decision until after the season. “I think our organization, my friends, people that follow my career for 21 years deserve better than just me or her posting something on Instagram,” Pujols said in his first interviews of … [Read more...] about Albert Pujols says he’ll decide future after season with Angels

I’d sooner miss the Olympics than take COVID vaccine: Yohan Blake’s Tokyo 2020 shock revelation

· February 28, 2021 ·

The Jamaican sprinter won silver in the 100 metres and 200m at London 2012, as Bolt landed gold in both races. Only Bolt has ever run faster than Blake over those distances. Speaking on Saturday, Blake expressed his opposition to being given a vaccine. The International Olympic Committee has indicated athletes will not need to be vaccinated before taking part in the Tokyo Games, but vice-president John Coates recently said it was "certainly being encouraged". The Olympics, postponed from last year due to the coronavirus crisis, is due to run from July 23 to August 8. Quoted by the Jamaica Gleaner newspaper, Blake said: "My mind still stays strong, I don't want any vaccine, I'd rather miss the Olympics than take the vaccine, I am not taking it. "I don't really want to get into it now, but I have my reasons." Blake, who won 100m gold at the 2011 World Championships, is now 31 and Tokyo may be his last chance to shine on the Olympic stage. He said in a video posted late on … [Read more...] about I’d sooner miss the Olympics than take COVID vaccine: Yohan Blake’s Tokyo 2020 shock revelation
