Vietnam staged a huge comeback victory, defeating Taiwan 4-1 at an AFC 2018 World Cup qualifying tournament encounter in Hanoi on Thursday, keeping hope alive that the Vietnamese might advance to the next stage in the event. Vietnam's coach Nguyen Huu Thang, in his debut match with the national team, and his men were unfazed when Wu Chun Ching scored the opening goal just seven minutes into the game. Veteran striker Cong Vinh netted an equalizing shot in the eighth minute and followed-up with a second goal in stoppage-time. Nguyen Van Toan, an Arsenal academy-trained striker, scored in both the 29th and 42nd minute to earn the Golden Stars a glorious victory. Coach Thang said the 4-1 win matters less than how the team were shaped after the first game under his regime. “We still have defense weaknesses which led to the opening goal by Taiwan,” he said. “My goal is to build a powerful team, not strong individuals.” Vietnam now have seven points after five … [Read more...] about Sports Vietnam beat Taiwan to revive hope in World Cup qualifying campaign Look out, 2019!

Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/Getty Images Paul Pogba has said he has found it hard to concentrate in a Manchester United shirt in 2018-19 after winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup with France in the summer. The midfielder has been frustratingly inconsistent for United again this season, and he said he has struggled to refocus after Russia 2018, in which he played a key role in Les Bleus' triumph, per Agence France-Presse (h/t Tony Mogan of the Evening Standard): "It's hard to concentrate, to start again, to hit hard, because we touched the stars. For us, it was the best trophy you can win as a footballer. But we like challenges, too. We have goals. For example, I've never won the Premier League, that's an objective. I'd like to do that." The pair have not enjoyed the best of relationships so far this season. … [Read more...] about Paul Pogba Says ‘It’s Hard to Concentrate’ After 2018 World Cup Win
Senegal were eliminated from the World Cup Thursday on a tie-breaker after losing to Colombia 1-0, while Japan were able to progress to the next round despite losing to already-eliminated Poland by the same score. Colombia finished with six points. Japan and Senegal finished on four points and scored and conceded the same number of goals. The next tiebreaker went in Japan's favor, because it had four yellow cards in the tournament and Senegal had six. Poland, which was already out of contention, picked up its first win of the tournament. Colombia and Japan will learn their knockout round opponents later in the day when England and Belgium, which have both already qualified, play each other to determine their order in the final standings. Chris Brunskill/Fantasista/Getty Images Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has said he did not listen to the "stupid" criticism that met his oddly indifferent performances for Spain at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He was widely criticised for fumbling a Cristiano Ronaldo shot into the net during Spain's 3-3 draw with Portugal, while he was a long way from his brilliant best in Russia. But, speaking ahead of United's 2018-19 UEFA Champions League opener against Young Boys on Wednesday, De Gea said he was not affected, per MailOnline's Chris Wheeler: "I never listen to the people who speak about me. Normally, I focus on my job and trying to help my team and trying to improve every training session and try to be as a good as I can. I never listen to stupid things like this they say." Per bet365, De Gea made just one save at the World Cup before Spain were knocked out by the hosts at the last-16 stage: Fortunately for United, there have been no signs so far in 2018-19 that … [Read more...] about David De Gea Brushes off ‘Stupid’ World Cup Criticism Before Young Boys Clash
